Stop Assuming The Skill Level of Unranked Players

Being unranked, by definition, means that there is no hard rank assigned to your skill, and thus does not limit how skilled you can be in any way. I am tired of people just assuming that unranked players are just some tier below bronze, or in bronze itself. Are there unranked player that play like bronze, yes, are there unranked players that play like diamonds, also yes. I admit that it can be hard to determine how good an unranked player is can be difficult as you have no rank to tell you what the ranked history says, but don't just assume that they're all utter garbage.

Granted, people who are unranked because they have yet to hit lvl 30 and are not smurfs are generally bad. Regardless, this is also a bad indicatior because people learn the game at different speeds, some have been playing since season 1 and are still bronze 5, while others can drop into a high rank-level of skill quite quickly. Personally, i'd say it took me levels 15-20 to play at the level of a high bronze.

I started playing at the beginning of season 6 and didn't play ranked till the last 3 months or so. I had to hard carry my way to silver where I was happy staying till the start of this season. When Flex queue was completely broken I had the opportunity to play against gold and even some platinum players and some of them are worse than teammates I had in bronze. No joke when I say I had a platinum caitlyn that didn't understand the concept of playing safe and kept going back in to fight whenever she was in lane. You never know who you're gonna get honestly.

To be fair, 80% of the population is sub--gold, so it is only logical to assume that unranked is silver/bronze

fair and safe assumption... but not entire true... some people play normals for fun cuz they dont care bout rank ( i know its blasphemy ) however... i say if i truly wanted to and try and put the time and effort into it i can get gold rank... that is the extent of my skill partly due to physical limitations with nerve damage in my left neck/arm/hand. with out trying and when i did do placements before i got silver... every time and had a win rate of 60% in rank... i just dont take the game overly serious and some people who do wouldnt be friendly to that mind set in a rank setting... so i stick to normals. but there have been times when faced vs gold/plat players i have held my own... when i have faced diamonds no way in hell lol way beyond me...

but it dont matter... rank is more so a way to put and place similar skill level players vs each other so the game is fun and challenging at the same time and to keep people playing the game longer. becoming addicted therefore riot makes more $.

but in the big picture its a video game its meant to have fun and be entertaining.... its not your SATs, credit score, GPA or anything that truly matters in life.

i'd put my best estimate of unranked at the average point, because literally that is the most logical thing to do? or maybe some people don't understand that.

I can't agree with this more - and on a further and similar note: Don't assume people's skill levels based off of their Champion Mastery, either - I'm personally MR7 as Leona, Yorick, and Azir - Yorick was the easiest, Leona was hard-earned, and Azir was a mix of hard-earned and just general luck. Were I to play Azir, a fair handful of people would probably say I suck - and I probably do.

But further on that note, I remember a few matches back, I played Sivir ADC in a Normal match and my support was an MR7 Nami - who never gave me Tidecaller's Blessing, and instead wasted it on either herself or people pinned by Vayne "because they needed the move speed boost". A perfect example of players who aren't skilled despite Mastery Rank.

But, reiterating the point; Like being Unranked, being MR5+ on Champions is not a good indicator of skill.
