Overwatch "ranked" mode sheds light on why Riot made Dynamic Queue.

For those of you who don't know, Overwatch had a ranked mode in closed beta. It was removed to be "tweaked" and re-released after launch due to complaints from the competitive players. The problem was essentially that all you had to do was grind enough games and you could get to the highest divisions of play. Even a 40% winrate and you would eventually wind up in their version of Master.

Now, why did Blizzard implement this kind of system? They outright tell you in some dev interviews. The short version is that they realized that almost all players liked going up in rank, but that the part they didn't like was struggling to go up and failing. Players want higher ranks, but what does Blizzard want? Blizzard wants people to keep playing their game, they want player retention and enough people playing at all times to keep queue times short. Solution? Turn ranked into a grind. That way players have to play a ton of games (what Blizzard wants) and they always go up in rank (what players want).

This isn't exactly the same thing as Dynamic Queue, no. But it's a similar thought process. Players want to go up in rank? Well, what do we want them to do? What do we get in return for giving players higher ranks? For LoL, the answer to that question was NOT "play more". LoL players already grind like mad, Riot doesn't need to incentivize that behavior. But what they DID want to incentivize was social play. Social players quit the game less often, and social players spend more money, those are Riot's priorities. So in exactly the same way Blizzard undermined the skill-based nature of their ranked play to incentivize grinding, Riot undermined the skill-based nature of their ranked play to incentivize playing with groups of friends.

And both companies thought they could do this for the exact same reason: they think you're stupid. They think you want higher ranks because "DURR, SHINY BADGES, ME GOOD AT GAME", not because it actually reflects your skill. Not because it means anything.

And every day you keep playing, every time you spend money, you prove them right.

Bravo. i want shit players out and good players in... also i think being a complete asshole in you interactions with other players should be a reviewable offence that can get you deranked, and in severe cases banned from competitive play.

Business as usual. Money talks. Question: is it worth to get rid of good solo players and replace them with bad dynamic queue players? Perhaps yes, since these bad players might pay more (because they feel they own for the game to reach ranks they don't deserve) than those lost solo players. If this experiment fails, they will simply restore the solo queue. It might be too late though. Time will tell.

If riot wants people to socialize more, then they need to add a "find friends who don't rage or AFK and play the modes I do at the times I do" button.

The big difference is that social play is a lot more important to a moba than going up in rank. They incentivized it in a terrible way, but they do need it to make sure that league can be the "forever game" they want it to be.

10/10 best way to describe it. Thats why everyone in na is taken as a joke the solo que isnt like korea and with dynamic que its worse.

Cause a majority of players are Casual Gamers, especially for Blizzard. They are what makes the money. Fuck game health, lets cater to the casuals for $$$$$$$

I think your trying to create a villian when their isn't one. "Undermining the skill based nature of this game," doesn't make much sense when this is a team based game where one player can drag down an entire game.

the only real advantage premades have over solo players is more options for communication. If ya want to argue that dynamic queue benefits premades more than lone wolves, you'd have a point there. But trying make it seem like they only did it for cash is stupid. Especially since outside of of the grouping mechanics; dynamic queue was meant to solve some of the bigger problems of solo queue. Like not getting the role your good at or leaving all the banning power behind one guy who could waste them.

Let's stop bitching bout how premades are op and solo queue was perfect, and let's instead demand better forms of communication to minimize the natural advantage premades have.

I'd quit this shitty game forever if any company out there gave a damn about anything other than income potential. But, when you have an industry overrun with shitty people like Beck, Hirshberg, Fils-Aime, Kimishima and all them... there is nowhere to go. Even companies like Nintendo are becoming shitty cash grabs.

So, when you have nothing to choose from but shitty games, you play shitty games. Beats staring at a wall.
