Mechanical Advantage vs Strategic Gameplay
Before I actually start this discussion I want to outline what I mean by both Mechanical Advantage and Strategic Gameplay.
Mechanical Advantage is pretty much a champions kit. It's Vayne using her stealth tumbles in between AAs, or setting up condemns, it's Lee bouncing around enemies/wards/etc and setting up his ult, it's Kalista hoping around between AAs building her rend and setting up her partner for her ult, it's Zed dodging attacks with his ult and jumping around between his shadows. It's what you tend to think about when you hear someone talk about a players mechanics when it comes to a champion.
Strategic Gameplay is how your team rotates around the map to take objectives, how you decide when/how to take objectives, or how you might bait enemies into a bad position and turn a fight. It's the decision to split push or group together, it's deciding when to invade an enemy jungle or deciding to collapse on an enemy jungler. The decisions of when and where to fight, and how your team wants to fight(think poke comp/all in wombo/skirmisher comps/raise the puppy/etc.)
That said I'm curious where people prefer this games direction to go. Do you prefer to high mechanical advantage champs like Zed/Yasuo/Lee/Kalista/Leblanc/Nid/Thresh/Kha/etc who have a lot of strengths and the weakness of them comes down more to player ability, as oppose to actually having many built in weaknesses, or do you prefer champs that have very clear strengths and weaknesses, like Ashe/Cass/Ori/Sion/TF/Karthus/Veiger/etc, and the game is more about designing your strategy to playing to your strengths while countering your opponents?
I'm bringing this up now because right now it feels really clear the direction riot is headed, if you look at the high mechanical champs aside for a select few they are all champs that are fairly recent and have been main stays at high level/pro play. While it's clear they don't fully crowd out all champions who don't fit into the mechanical playstyle, after all Sion/Cass/Ori still see a good bit of high level/pro play, I would say it's undeniable that they have pushed a lot of the champion pool out of the game itself and pushed League far more towards the mechanical style of play and away from the strategic gameplay that was the heart of the game.
This isn't to say that Mechanical champs completely eliminate strategic gameplay, but I do think there is an argument to be made for them invalidating a lot of it's strengths. We've seen many times when someone on the pro scene finds their self caught in a 3v1/4v1, after being out maneuvered or collapsed on, on one of these champs and either comes out alive with a kill or dies while picking up multiple kills. Plays like that between the best players in the world do go a long way in showing just how devalued strategy can be when dealing with champions that have such a high level of mechanical advantage.
What do you guys think? Do you like the game going more in a mechanical direction where you are rewarded more for your individual ability to play a champ or do you prefer the more team oriented strategic gameplay that limits your individual ability in favor of forcing a more team wide strategy?
