They dont.

Not only would this be incredibly hard to do (tons of extra matchmaking time and complexity), there is no reason to do it.

Get better, or at least blame luck and statistics, not riot.

Disembark4 votes

I mean it's completely appropriate if you're trying to climb? There is no way to climb any significant amount besides "getting better".

Can you be a Silver 1 player and luck yourself into Gold 5? Sure. But a Silver 1 player will never "luck" into Gold 4/Gold 3.

The problem is that people don't actually care about improving or continuing to climb - they just hope they can get lucky enough to get X desired rank (i.e. Gold 5).

Whereas if they actually focused on improving, that rank would come naturally.

SzGamer2272 votes

As someone who plays ranked only when LP gain/loss is nudging me up to the rank it wants me to be, I can say it's satisfying to see myself progress from being borderline Bronze 1 two years ago to being a solid Silver 5 and now being in Silver 4 just by improving and letting the system take me to where I belong.

Tegash1 votes

The problem with recommending improvement is that it's a team game. In low elo, people who don't know what you're talking about will simply not listen to you. This happens in Challenger level games as well, if streams are anything to go by.

Telling someone they need to get better and they'll improve naturally comes off as snide, especially when you're ignoring that fact that you have a coinflip of having a team of delightful allies who run with you, or a team of crying babies you have to drag to the finish line.

A Silver 1 player sure as hell can't luck their way into Gold 1, but a Plat 3 player sure as hell can waffle between Gold 1 and Plat 5 if they get the wrong teammates.

No no they don't. There is no substantial evidence to back this up. It isn't even a logical assumption. Riot doesn't and pretty much can't force you to have a 50% winrate by giving you "bad" teamates. What the system does do is that it boosts your mmr much higher if you go on a large winstreak meaning you are playing against better (higher mmr) opponents as well as better (higher mmr ) teamates. The game doesn't try to balance 1 specific persons winrate to 50%, it tries to balance the mmr of that match to be equal on both teams.

Is this not then rigging the game? If its suddenly boosting you to a higher MMR than you're capable because you go on a win streak. Not only is that just as rediculous...

Think about that from the OTHER point of view? SUddenly those guys are seeing you in their games, and you're causing them a loss because you're in an MMR you have no business being in...

Kinda the same damn thing you're saying is impossible or doesn't happen, yet here you are.. saying it does in the same breath..

Well no because if the game doesn't put you in a higher mmr, you (not you specifically, but people who actually are a bit better than where they currently are) will be getting to higher ranks for free since you will be playing against the same difficulty opponents while your lp goes up. If you go on a big winstreak, the game assumes you are better than your current elo. Unless the winstreak was pure luck, there should be no problems with your mmr going up.

What’s your evidence?

How do you then explain people going on 20-30 win streaks.

Face it, we all lose at times. We get subpar teammates or we’re the subpar teammates.

Believing in the Riot’s matchmaking system is rigged against you with no real evidence beyond anecdotes is on par with conspiracy theorists..

Show me people on 20-30 win streaks. That should be an easy thing to find if the system lets you climb freely.

??? - at first paragraph

This is kind of easy to look at. Go to any ranked division and see how many players are on a hot streak compared to the number of players in that division. If the system is free, then it should be easy for good players. If there are barely any, then that is interesting. If you do find a player on a hot streak, look at their match history and follow it.

https://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-history/NA1/230306980

Seems like a consistent hard carry player. So what accounts for the losses? Click on them and find out. It's interesting to look at the breaks in the win streak. Because those games are not even close, to the level of play of other games where it is more evenly distributed. Sure you lose some, but those games are wildly different.

Just tell me, how many people are on a win streak. But again what information have you brought to the contrary.

MagicFlyingLlama2 votes

Statistics and common sense.

Losses happen, and samples get more uniform over a large size.

There are tons of people with high winrates, as well, 60-70% is not out of the ordinary for a smurf or someone working hard on climbing and improving. Are you going to suggest riot chooses to rig specific people?

It would be easy to rig one person to a 50% winrate, but none of these monkeys using it as an excuse for their losses seem to realize other players exist. For every loss there is a win, for 5 people at a time.

If the system restricts a majority of players to a 50% winrate, than nobody could have a higher or lower winrate outside of statistically insigificant short streaks. It would be mathematically impossible to climb. There cant be more total wins than losses.

Even if it was picking and targeting specific people, it would vastly complicate matchmaking.

Oh, and why the hell would riot do this in the first place? It serves no purpose.

It is just an excuse made by trash players to not accept the fact they are trash. Get over it, take the conspiracy theories away.

I would love to wait in a 10 min queue rather than having to wait in a 20-40min game where you team is utterly garbage

Chase 53 votes

It kind of does. I know the initial post was a bit of a rant, but let me elaborate.

Matchmaking is supposed to find players of equal-ish skill to compete against each other, however it gets more nuanced. Let's say it finds 10 people using silver 3 as a baseline, so you might have some silver 3's, 2's, 4's. Now it has to attempt to take the available player pool and sort them out. The system isn't going to take the 5 best people in the pool and put them on one side. So there is a balance. If a person is at the top of the pool and can be seen carrying the last 3+ games, then it would make sense to put the lowest player in the pool with them. Depending on how big the gap is the greater chance of discrepancy in the pool assignment. So you might see something like this 1,4,7,8,10 vs 2,3,5,6,9. Which is sorting players by rank in the pool. It could be larger depending on how high number 1 is. So you could get a 1,5,8,9,10 vs 2,3,4,6,7. And that is a super easy win for the 2,3,4 side. A great example is a friend of mine that can hard carry. He will go on win streaks and then get something like this.

https://matchhistory.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/#match-details/NA1/2849453363/230306980?tab=overview

You can see where he will go on a win streak, then get a team that does that. The same happens to me. This game is still unfortunately about the worst player on the team having the most impact. But you can see this under Ranked in your profile. You don't really see many people on a hot streak. And it's why if you are on a win streak, you'll come across a game where you and one other player on the team are at the same skill level, if that.

The problem which has been pointed out, is they allow people from different ranks into games they should not be in. This is where the system primarily fails. Especially in Silver where they can let first time ranked players end up in.

But before you say get better, there is any easy way to check match history and look at the stats, maybe there are merit to these words ;)

Actually, no, it isn't any more nuanced than that. All matchmaking does is take 10 players of equal skill and put them together. Full stop.

There are shitty players at every mmr bracket. You will get them on your team very often reguardless of whether or not you are on a winstreak. Going on a winstreak doesn't increase or decrease the chance of this happening. If you happen to have won the last 3-4 games before you get shitters on your team, that is a pure coincidence. If you happen to have los the last 3-4 games before you get shitters on your team, that is pure coincidence. At the end of the day, you will get shitters on your team very often and winstreaks doesn't change that.

Not really, if you play enough games you notice the trends and get a better sense of how the system works. It's pretty obvious that if you go on a successful streak and are playing really well you will get shut down by the matchmaking system. It's not that they match you with better players, it will actually match you with players that have no business being in the MMR range that you are playing. I've gone on 10 game winning streaks and then all of a sudden start getting matched with unranked players playing their first 10 games.. matched with players who don't understand the basic core fundamentals of the game.

In my Gold promotionals where I was playing against high Silver/low Gold all of a sudden I get unranked players who go 0-18 in game, then my next promotional I got 2 unranked players... that's a sobering experience.

The OP is right though, there are a lot of things about this game that are awesome, but Riots implementation of a Rank/Ladder system is about the most disgusting thing I have ever seen.. and I've play a lot of ladder type implementations over the years.

Actually it's kind of odd, it seems like they are trying to hard at this ranked thing. They just need to keep it simple, if you are new to the game, start at the bottom and win your way up. Stop with all the fancy crap that they do, and stop grading people on MR but yet have a ranked system that shows the user an entirely different metric of success, it just doesn't work.

No, that is completely false. Just from a mathematical standpoint alone, it is impossible to create a queue that you are describing without queue times spiking up to 10-20x normal range when accounts go on a win streak.

The reality is that there are a ton of shitty players and you will get them on your team a lot. It doesn't matter if you won or lost your last few games, you will inevitably get bad players because there are just so many of them.

Mmr system is meant for chess or 1 versus 1 games, not for team games, that's why the elo system in this game sucks lmao. Jesus how many proofs people needs to understand that the SoloQ of this game is really bad designed. Even faker said it, before people who were challenger wasn't able to drop to masters, just a few points in a losing streak by their own tilt, nowadays it's like the SoloQ empairs you with the worst players that the game can offer to you just to see if you can carry them with an extra mobile champ or global ult champ just like Dopa does... wtf. Just like when tyler1 dropped from masters to plat 1 without any variance in his playstyle, i remember when this posts were sporadic, now its like everyday there are 2 or 3 with so many upvotes.

Whether or not mmr is meant for 1 vs 1 and whether or not riot is actively rigging the game are two completely different issues. I was responding to someone claiming the game is rigged.

As far as your point goes, every system sucks for individual rankings in a 5v5 game. MMR is used by so many games because it happens to suck less than all of the alternatives.

Stupafly3 votes

About the tyler1 arguement.

This game changes.... you have to change your playstyle with the game or be left behind. I personally know little about tyler1 but if you are EXTREMELY well known and play without variance................. maybe people know what you are going to do and counter it? Maybe you are playing to an old meta after a patch....

You have to have variance.

Can you show me the math then? And if it's impossible then how are other games so successful at it? When playing Starcarft 4x4 I was diamond playing against diamond players... each game was more or less enjoyable and it was extremely rare to get a player not of the diamond quality. How are they doing it if it's so impossible?

And to be clear I'm not talking about players who are having a bad game or maybe aren't performing as well, I'm talking about blatant seeding of players who have no business being in a game at the current skill level that you are at. It should be impossible for a player to get queued up in a Gold level game when they have only played 1 ranked game before, don't understand CS or basic warding. That's Bronze level play, and I don't say that negatively about Bronze but that is what Bronze is for. How does this player skip Silver and get into a Gold game (not duo with anybody)? And note, that player goes through a lot of hell and abuse by everybody in the game (including the other team).

The system is broken, badly broken.

What large multiplayer games "will actually match you with players that have no business being in the MMR range that you are playing" after a winstreak? As far as I know, only mobile games attempt to use such a model and that is for 1v1. Other large mobas use an elo system similar to league. When you win, you get better allies and opponents. When you lose, you get worse ones.

Anyway, your accusation is that league will intentionally give you worse players as allies as you go on a winstreak. That means initially, you can be paired up with anyone in your elo range. However, as you win more and more games, the game becomes more and more restricted in who it can pair you up with because it has to find worse and worse players. As the subset of players get smaller, your queue times will skyrocket.

Players develop in different areas at a very different level. You are probably biased towards your own playstyle and don't understand other ones which are successful at silver and gold levels.

They do... But they are often on such a massively higher level of playing the game, and micro/macro knowledge they can overcome the jax going 0/22/0 on their team.

But looking at their match histories you can see the pattern, and the closer they get to their elo, the more it becomes apparent as they do begin to get those 4-5 win streaks then 2-3 losses due to horrible players feeding up the yazoo in a predictable pattern.

Just takes someone with half a brain to look at things past the surface. Leave it to intelligent people with critical thinking skills.

I always thought critical of myself. I thought reaching Gold V last season was a fluke. I thought I would barely go over Gold V and maybe get Gold IV. But the I reached Plat V and I thought "yea thats it" then I got up to Plat 2 and actually called it a day. I dropped back to plat 4, but I am very well aware that it was my own fault and I could have reached Diamond if I tried harder. I di never get into a forced lose streak. It was either i fucked up or I had the unlucky instance of someone tilting and or DCing (WHICH CAN NOT BE PREDICTED BY MATCHMAKER). So yeah, leave the critical thinking to intellegent people :)

Ignorance is bliss. You didn't prove anything other than you fail to realize what's going on lol... Literally can show proof, proof has been shown, and constant patterns have been shown in the past. I have constant patterns of wins an dlosses with the same type of teams.

Patterns are a statistical improbability in something that is supposed to be random, and not something that is a constant, yet this is.

Literaly everyone who disagress with the forced 50% w/r is literally saying "yea well I dont believe you cuz I dont see it"... and showing no facts or stats to back it up.

But the matchmaking system is forcing a 50% winrate remember? If they are massively ahead of everyone else, then it makes sense for the matchmaker to put the worst possible players on their team so not even they can carry them. After all, if the matchmaker is working like everyone claims, then they aren't allowed to have higher than 50% winrates because it's the matchmaker's job to screw them over right? That's why nobody who plays this game has higher than a 50% winrate right? Everyone is being forced towards a 50% winrate so not even smurfs can have higher than a 50% winrate right?

I honestly want to agree with you and say that the system is rigged, but that's simply just not how it works.

It's solo queue. People aren't going to pick optimal champions or even build a decent team comp every game. Some people will tilt. Some are already tilted from previous games, for the same reason that you're now upset at them.

Review the last 5 or so games of each of your teammates when you think Riot is "inting" your LP with their matchmaking. I seriously doubt that all four of your teammates are on a hard losing streak, or that they're inting/soft-inting all of their games. If they are, then that is the rarest case and will not consistently be happening to you.

Learn how to hard-win your role and to guide your team to victory. If you're 5/0 out of lane top as Darius and your bot is struggling. Go help them. If you're 1/4/2 as a jungler, then you're probably part of the problem and you need to figure out what is going wrong. Bad pathing? Counterjungling someone you can't fight? Counterjungling while enemy laners are missing and getting countered? Do you play support? Then all is not hopeless if your AD is having a rough game. Go roam and help the strongest part of your team and have your AD farm it out, and then bring the strongest part of your team to get your AD back into the game, while securing vision and denying vision to the enemy.

What usually makes the difference in the lower Elos is macro play and shot-calling, because players at these tiers just want to fight constantly and then don't know what to do after the fight is over. If you ace the enemy team at 20+ minutes, you get Baron if you are healthy enough or multiple towers, but I see lower Elo players base or go farm Krugs.

I've played at every division below Challenger on a variety of accounts over the years. If you put in the effort, you can come out ahead. Some games you will lose because the enemy team plays/drafts better than you, but you need to work on your gameplay because statistics completely disagree with your thinking. As much as you, and I, want it to be true that the system is broken, statistics don't lie.

Good luck on The Fields of Justice.

I don't know why people are downvoting this guy... my last few ranked games have been nothing but degenerate apes that run down their lanes and go 0/10 by 5 minutes.

GREAT PERSONAL EXAMPLE. Oh man, you really proved op right! Good job! You have 2 ranked games played within the last week both as losses, and that is definitely not enough to even consider if there is a pattern. Try 100 games then say you are getting forced losses. I don't know how people could even think of upvoting this guy, it just makes no sense.

Does anyone actually know how matchmaking works? I have asked a few threads and never gotten an answer... Is it truly random by closest MMR or is there something else happening?

It's a myth. They said there's nothing like this implemented in league.
