I'm One of the Few Players Who Actually Like the New Champ Select

SpongebobIsLife··83 votes·3,246 views

I do think there are a few issues regarding the que time, but riot is already addressing that issue. The main reason why I like this, is that in 10 3-man pre-made ranked games I played, no one was trolling, no one was randomly dcing, no one was rage quitting or flaming each other. It was one huge factor I did not have to worry about. Granted I think 5 man ques are a little ridiculous, but I find the rest of the changes to be fine, and is in fact moving league of legends forward.

I myself also like it, minus the auto kick for not locking. It's just that everyone who enjoys it is playing instead of crying on the boards.

SpongebobIsLife5 votes

haha good point. I'm hoping they go back to the system auto-locking whatever champion you are hovering over. NA was the test monkey for this new champion select so I'm sure they plan to change a few things around.

Jari3 votes

I believe the reason was that not locking in just takes longer and some intentionally did it just to waste people's time. By forcing you to lock it, the system can penalize you for wasting time for people.

Plus most of the time you know who you're going to bring in anyways.

High51 votes

I'll give it another chance, but it took longer to play two nights ago. I just minimize the window for the first 30 seconds too. Pick intent is fine, but 30 seconds is a long time for lazy people who only know one champ and want to inastlock them.

Ahri Love10 votes

I like it very much, I think its a much better option for DRAFT modes, but the fact that it replaced team builder, is the problem. The new champion select doesn't do anything that team builder did. I loved being able to choose a champ, queue, find a team, and play. Team builder lets you do exactly what its title is - Build a team, you could play champs in unconventional roles, play 5 to one lane, deny or accept team mates, play a favorite champion that is always banned, etc. And besides waiting to find a team (which you can just do something else on your comp while waiting) it doesn't take much time. The new champ select is awesome, but not a replacement for team builder - if riot would have both I would be a happy moose. [slayer-jinx-catface]

(Side note - three times in a row the other day I got into the new champ select, went through everything only to have someone leave during those final 30 seconds. And ive had my intended pick champion been banned many times (not even current perma-ban champions) I just wanna pick a champ and play, not wait 4 minutes in a draft to either have my champ be banned or someone leave)

I can agree with everything here •Team builder being made was the best thing to ever happened to League •Team builder being removed was the worst thing that has ever happened League

I have played quite a few Matches with the new system I've luckily only had the champ I wanted to play, stolen from me, 1once, and it was hell... But my problem isn't with the champion select and the banning system or people who leave... Its the game its self. •With Team builder, every 8th match was hell to play, most likely cause they just had better players and a better comp •With this new system, every 8th match, is fun to play, Most matches, someone is either lagging, bad, afk, or is laning someone who counters them. •With Team build we would wait and only except people for a good, well rounded, well synergistic, team-comp. •With this new system, we may get a team of all AD even though we beg and beg our people not to go all AD, or we could get a team with and afk and someone who is having bad lag

The new system isn't bad The new system can be improved upon though But the removal of Team Build was the worst thing Riot could of ever done, it was un-needed, it has lost them so many people, I was once in a Skype group chat where i saw a lot of saying they were going to leave, I went back and counted, and I count, 36 people, leaving because of the removal of Team build, and I my self and going to take a break from LoL until they add it back, I can not say how much of a mistake this was for riot to do

TL;DR Riot, please add Team Builder back, you can still keep the new system

Preach it Brother!!!

The new Draft Queue is perfectly fine for what it does, Ranked Matches. But it doesn't replace Teambuilder. They took a very competitive queue and shoved it onto the casuals who might not ever want to pick draft. Before Teambuilder, I'd have to hop into Blind Pick and argue with everyone about who goes where, and who called what. I hated that down to my very core. I don't know of anyone who enjoys going into Blind Pick if they know what to expect. It's a giant shitfest where you either get what you want, don't get what you want, or decide to be a dick and go the role you want anyways.

Teambuilder fixed all of those problems and I couldn't have been happier. It was my literal dream come true. Now I'm stuck with a Draft mode that doesn't do any of that. When people don't get what they want, they leave (completely expected, and I have and would do the same), restarting the queue. There are others who don't lock in, restarting the queue. If I am by the grace of god lucky enough to get the role I want, there's a decent chance that the queue will restart due to the above, and I won't get it the next time. This not only wastes my time, but makes it so I don't even end up with what I want!

Riot, Teambuilder is available to you, and fully functional. You don't have to put anymore effort into making it do what is needed. That is, having a queue where everyone gets the role and champion they want. A Queue where everyone is happy. Please re-enable it. Re-enabling Teambuilder would have no negative repercussions to the player base, who simply want to play your game. If for some unknown reason you can't put Teambuilder back in Queue, please put the functionality of it into the new Queue. Allow players in the Normal Draft to be able to select one role and be guaranteed that role, even if we would have to wait in a longer queue. People in this current queue are already waiting so long, and sometimes not even getting their desired role. This new queue doesn't replace Teambuilder, and we need something of the like in its place.

High51 votes

This isn't true. If you're fkexible and learned the basics of the game, the ild draft generally worked fine.

Jury's out in the new system. It isn't longer, but it feels longer to get into game now. Pick intent and 3 individual bans by people who accidentally dodge half the time us annoying.

Ayame Isaki1 votes

I feel like an easy solution would be to remove blind pick and restore team builder. The new system is a great upgrade for draft; just as team builder was a great replacement for blind pick. Blind pick sucks; the amount of arguing and general BS takes the fun out of a match before it even starts.

Tatrii4 votes

I like it too I just wish i could pick one role and the second one was optional, I also wish i could buy skins in champ select, and select my chroma packs.

I support dynamic queue. It takes into account being a part or being the leader of a team along with other things solo queue measures. Friends playing together in general is a great learning environment. Instead of trying to work as a team after reaching Diamond and challenger you can do it right from the start. The solo skill measurement by itself is unnecessary and completely useless in a team game.

That being said Riot needs to execute it better. They need to address the misinformed and make it very clear that they value teamwork over solo skill. Over time solo skill will catch up to teamwork in importance but right now teamwork is most important (since it has been ignored for too long) and that is what the queue will rank you in. A lot if people are being fed misinformation and a small group of people which I guess want to reach Master next season are spreading paranoia and unrest atleast on reddit.

And from a high elo players' point of view, it makes sense to be against dynamic queue since it screws their tried and tested plan (e.g. it becomes harder to tilt people now) to reach Master of Challenger next season. Just remember that someone from normals might just come and stomp all over solo queue and become famous while you will be left wondering why no one values your skill.

In general, solo skill is worthless if you can't play with a team (friends or random premade) and if you can, there should be no problem with dynamic. Lmao the 95% is too damn high if you ask me. It should be fair and square with no restrictions and not heavily favoring solo players. Teamwork is paramount in esports and it should be reflected in the main ranked queue. Solo players should be required to be as good in teamwork as a premade. Right now they aren't which is why your rank will amount to nothing until you get a good team. It is not impossibe but just a matter of enforcing it.

Edit: TL:DR Playing with or against a premade is the right way to play this game. FUCK SOLO QUEUE.

Of course you're going to have great experiences if YOU'RE the one in the premade, you get to choose your premade. The solo queue players don't get to choose their premades. They either get your friendly premade or they get the premade from hell for their next game. Might as well flip a coin to see if their next half hour is going to be complete torture or not.

SpongebobIsLife3 votes

but on the same side of things, I have played some solo games, and I haven't any negative experiences. At least not any worth noting.

YossarianSensei3 votes

Dynamic Queue is separate from the new Champ select

I'd imagine most people are ok with Champ Select but on the other hand Ranked is now meaningless with Dynamic Queue. How is it any different from Normals, other than the fact you get a little gold star at the end of 'ranked'?

SpongebobIsLife6 votes

how is ranked meaningless?

YossarianSensei3 votes

It's a rating that no longer represents your solo queue abilities, yet isn't a ranked team rating either

It has the same limitations as Normal queue, so how is it any different than Normals other than an arbitrary rating at the end

Doctor Jarvis1 votes

How has it ever been different?

YossarianSensei2 votes

You were restricted to Solo/Duo

My complaint isn't that there's now effectively a Ranked Normals, but rather Riot has decided Ranked Normals should replace Ranked Solo when they're not the same thing.

There are already Ranked Teams, so now that we have 'Ranked Normals' we now have 2 modes that will give you a ranking that reflects players Premade skill but nothing that would reliably rate a players Solo Queue skill.

Riot can keep Ranked Normals for all I care but for god sakes put solo queue back.

Implying ranked solo q ever was an accurate skill rating system anyways.

I'm going to be extremely mean here, but upon searching "DrNova" it comes up with a Bronze player. Now pardon me, but, I find this extremelly hilarious.

Solo Queue, was a dead accurate skill rating system. No matter how much the people stuck in low elo cry in an uproar about how bad it was, it wasn't that bad at all.

I have solid experience and results that show Solo Queue's skill indicator is true, in the form of the attitude in each elo. What do you have? A handfull of people too busy being angry at their bad teams or their bad rank to improve and get better.

No, it isn't a good system. I could go I to an explanation of why but I can see by your attitude you are impervious to logical discussion.

Its an inherently bad system, but some people climb out of the lower brackets and get a huge ego about how awesome they are .

Yes, because you've been presenting so much points in this thread to this very moment. You can't come in, drop a statement like "implying solo queue was an accurate measurement of skill" and then leaving, that's asking to be taken for a fool.

We're probably bumping into a word definition problem here, I'm considering "skill" as, an aglomerate of mechanics, attitudes, and knowledgend paired with decision making that a player may employ to achieve a win. I've also played countless, "All around matches", consisting of very varied teams, I've played with bronzes and beat diamonds, I've teamed with plats and was destroyed by silvers.

But a consistent truth I can see in all these matches, is the, small, but noticeable mechanical build up by ranks, and the two very big deciding factors that create biggest bridge between a bronze and a diamond, decision making and attitude.

I can see it in my friends, the non-competitive, lower tiered ones, are very quick to punch the table and proclaim "This champ is bloody tarded", we're talking Malzahar here, sometimes, I'll retort with "He's immobile, and he has to vulnerabilize himself to deal damage", but they can't see past the "champ", the "fight" and that, one, moment where they're inside W, with E proc'd, and getting ulted. They're not bad, or stupid, they just lack the important attitude to learn, and the decision making required to know when to, and when to not pick a fight with Malz.

And, while, I will have to agree that, the fact that, ranks, basically, converge to pile up all the people not even trying/trolling/or just not skilled enough for silver, in bronze, making the climb out of there harder, I'll still stand my ground. The ranking system is fair, and accurate.

SpongebobIsLife4 votes

solo que never actually showed your _** true **_personal abilities in the first place. It just showed how lucky you were. And that last statement regarding normals does not make much sense as even before dynamic que took place that was still the scenario, unless you were one of these people who plays only blind pick.

YossarianSensei5 votes

Yes it did....

With a rudimentary understanding of statistics you would know luck has very little to do with your Rank over the long run. If you get trolled and decide to tilt thats on you, not the system.

What made Solo Queue rank meaningful in previous seasons is that you were restricted to that type of game mode e.g. at most duo queue so your rank reflected your abilities to work with random allies to achieve victory, but now there's no longer that restriction so it's basically ranked Normals now because it has the same set of rules as normals. It's almost like saying you can play ARAM in Twisted Treelines and get a TT ranking by playing ARAM.

I'm not against having a 'Ranked Normals' mode but it shouldn't replace Solo Queue.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

All those statistics are still true with dynamic queue.

If you are stuck in a 4+1 against another 4+1, and you decide to tilt and lose, that's on you, not the system. You still have influence over the game, just like the other people in that game.

OneSmoothDude1 votes

In theory, yes. Lyte said a day or two ago that similar team pairings aren't happening as frequently as they expected them to. They wanted 4s/5s to play other 4s/5s 95% of the time (too low imho) but it actually ended up around 83% iirc. It's all in the top post in the Dev Corner, have a look.

They will address it before ranked happens, but we don't know how well they'll address it.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

I don't think that's the thing I care about them addressing. Again, statistics. Everyone who queues similarly should have similar numbers on that. Two people who NEVER do premades should run into roughly the same number and type of mismatches over time.

I'm just not worried about that. I was recently in a game with two duos against a trio. It felt pretty okay, honestly. It came down to individual play, just like in a typical soloQ game. Yeah, I was able to talk to one guy on my team, and that was true of another pair. Maybe we took advantage of that. But our one solo guy also outperformed the other team's solo guys. It could have easily gone the other way, had the players on the other team been better.

And that's what it is always going to come down to for me. Even if you occasionally had a game with 5 guys vs. a 5 premade, it comes down to individual skill. I think it's very tempting for the losing side to chalk that up to teamwork deficiency, but the reality is that they have designed the queue to avoid mismatches. Most games, that won't be a factor. Over time, it smooths out.

I hope, in a few months, Riot has some data about premades doing roughly the same as solo players. If they aren't able to show that, maybe it needs some tweaks, but I'm HIGHLY skeptical those tweaks will be major. Player skill is still the #1 determinant of who wins, and it always will be. Outplay your opponents, and you win.

OneSmoothDude1 votes

Well yes, individual skill is certainly important. But to say that improved inter-team communication has such a small impact is certainly incorrect. All other things being equal (i.e. properly matching similarly-skilled teams' based on MMR), communication is a huge advantage mid- and late-game, where individual skill differences aren't as important as they are in the laning phase.

I think it's very tempting for the losing side to chalk that up to teamwork deficiency, but the reality is that they have designed the queue to avoid mismatches.

They aim to, yes. But the entire point of my last message was that this reality was false around 17% of the time. That is a fuck-ton of matches.

Player skill is still the #1 determinant of who wins, and it always will be. Outplay your opponents, and you win.

I agree...in lane. But this is a 5v5 game and the team that plays it as such will be miles ahead of one in which every person thinks "can I carry harder than their fed person."

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Your information is outdated. Before dynamic queue was down for maintenance, they already had it up to 98% plus of the time, 5 mans were against other 5 mans, and similar numbers for 4-man groups.

It's just not the scope of problem everyone is chalking it up to.

OneSmoothDude1 votes

Well to be fair, I said was. :P But I was unaware that they had brought it up to 98%. I read that they wanted to bring it up, but not that they had. Awesome!

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Haha yeah, they really are trying. I know it's not the favorite of a lot of players, but I really think they are onto something. I have really enjoyed my time with the new queue, and I think it's telling that it's now down and we're getting complaint threads about it already. It's not going nearly as poorly as team building lovers had hoped.

YossarianSensei1 votes

That might be true for the solo player but in this system the solo player is already inherently disadvantaged.

A Solo Queuer can eventually find his true Dynamic Queue rank as a Solo player, but why does that even matter when other players who are in all likelihood inferior players have the same rank by playing exclusively premade?

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

That makes no sense, statistically... Premades are playing against other premades 98% of the time. Both sides can't be advantaged. Your argument is ignoring the statistical reality of the system.

YossarianSensei1 votes

I don't understand what you're saying because for every Premade that isn't a 5 man there will be solo queuers thrown into the mix to fill in the slots

I'm not saying the sides in a match are disadvantaged, I'm saying the solo queuers are.

Not only are solo queuers matched into a true solo queue game occasionally, they also have less influence over the game when they're teamed with a premade.

Essentially premade players are playing a different game mode than solo queuers but are still being rated on the same scale, which makes no sense.

ModKnightsKemplar1 votes

Yeah, so we've honed in on the part that I consider to be the crucial flaw in your argument.

If the solo queuers are not any more or less likely to win, how are they disadvantaged? That makes no sense. They HAVE to be more or less likely to win for it to affect their ranking. And if there's a solo queuer on both sides, that can't be the case. Not because of their status as a solo player, anyway, since there's one on both teams. They can't both be at a disadvantage with respect to winning, by definition of the word "disadvantage."

That's WHY Riot is making it so that each size of premade is matched against the same size premade. That way, the solo queuers aren't any more or less likely to win the game. That's means they aren't at a disadvantage.

You probably have a point that solo players influence the game less, through lack of communication, than the premades. But again, that's true of the solo players on the other side, so it balances.

If your argument is that it affects solo ranking, you are dead wrong. No two ways about it, sorry. You could argue, instead, that it's less fun for them. That would make sense. But fun doesn't magically affect your ranking. That's nonsense.

TL;DR - The solo players HAVE to be in matchups where they are more likely to lose BECAUSE of their status as a solo player for them to be at a disadvantage. That's why the system is designed the way it is, and saying otherwise is just obviously wrong. Not trying to be rude, but it is. Unless you lose more, you don't lose rank more. That's fact.
