Why did Yorick need the buff exactly?

This new patch completely busted Yorick in my opinion. He wasn't the most amazing top lane pick before, but he wasn't bad in any way. I'm fine with the quality of life improvement to his R, but I don't understand his new passive mechanic. Why did he need more ghouls? He can go full tank and still one shot easily... I don't understand why this much of a drastic buff was needed. Before this patch, sure it took skill, but you could easily have great games as Yorick.
