Leona over Kayle

I'm wondering why Leona is the choice support over Kayle.

Leona has a stun, a personal shield, an engage and her ult. slows. Kayle has a heal, a slow, her melee turns to ranged that scales with AP and her ult. is a pretty big shield. Both have a passive that allows for extra damage and both have stats that are almost the same.

I haven't tried Leona, but i've played a fair bit of Kayle support and it usually goes ok. I also find that when people ask me to choose a tanky support, they disagree that Kayle is tanky. Leona has a tanky reputation but their stats are the same, and they don't seem to be that far behind Alistar's (at level 10 Kayle (1504 hp) is only 170 hp behind Alistar (1673 hp) not accounting for runes etc. Leona is 1446 hp) Kayle and Leona both have more armour than Alistar, Leona with slightly more than Kayle.

Thoughts?

problem is your kind of comparing apples and oranges here, leona is a tanky support that deals with heavy engage and lockdown, while kayle is more of a damage support with healing and the ability to make an ally invincible. you'd have a better comparison comparing her to something like zilean.

you are looking at one single thing, seeing that kayle isnt bad at base health, and assuming this means hes on par with leona or alistar. this isnt true. For one thing, independent of items leona will be far more tanky than kayle because of w. Alistar because of ult. Also leona is useful when building tankly, because of cc. kayle would really have nothing to offer besides his ult...would do no damage, the heals would be pathetic, the q would be weak...in some teamfight people could jsut ignore tank kayle and kayle wouldnt have much to do in helping his teamates, unlike alistar or leona who can provide very important cc. leonas ult also stuns people in the center, her engage does interrupt channelling

Her W makes her naturally tanky. And she has a ton more CC than Kayle.

Kayle isn't a terrible support, but Leona can lock people down for a long time. The only real benefit of a Kayle support is the heal (not great compared to other heal supports) and her ultimate.

Also if you build Kayle tanky she becomes an ult bot. The only thing useful on her is going to be her ult because without AP her Q and E do abysmal damage and her heal will be unnoticeable.
