Making Sona Work

Martyrofsand··4 votes·1,751 views

So been thinking about Sona for a while and right now the current version of her in live simply does not work. It doesn't fit her theme as a musician, it doesn't fit her theme as an aura champion, and it isn't viable in the least. That said as much as I would personally prefer her rework be reverted I know that isn't going to happen so instead of crying for the impossible I want to offer my view on the direction I feel the current Sona could go in order to at least return her character as a musician, the feeling of having powerful auras and also her viability. I want to stress that I am not going to discuss specific numbers beyond mana costs, IE not going to say "Sona Q does X damage" but more I want to focus on changing her playstyle so it fits who she is, numbers can be addressed later.

That said here is how I feel Sona could be changed.

**Passive

Encore** Every 3rd time Sona's aura is refreshed on an ally it receives an additional effect.

Hymn of Valor--Damage is doubled

Aria of Perseverance--When the shield breaks it heals the target for twice the shielded value.

Song of Celerity--Ally becomes energized allowing their next auto attack to create a field for 1.5 seconds that slows enemies inside.

This effect can only trigger on the same ally once every 10 seconds.

**Hymn of Valor **40/45/50/55/60 Activation, 20 mana per sec channel 6 second CD

Active: Sona sends out bolts of sound that deal magic damage to the two nearest enemies within 700-range, prioritizing champions.

Channeled Aura: Sona and allied champions tagged with Hymn of Valor's aura deal bonus magic damage on their next basic attack refreshing every second, lasts 3 seconds once canceled or move out of range.

**Aria of Perseverance ** 60/70/80/90/100 Activation, 50 mana per sec channel 6 second CD

Active: Sona heals herself and a nearby allied champion with the lowest health percentage. The healing is increased by 0.5% for every 1% of the target's missing health.

Channeled Aura: Sona and allied champions tagged with Aria of Perseverance's aura are shielded, refreshing every second.

Song of Celerity 65 Activation, 30 mana per second channel 6 second CD

Active: Sona gains a burst of bonus movement speed that decays down to the aura bonus over 3 seconds. The duration is increased by 0.5 seconds for each ally she tags with the aura.

Channeled Aura: Allied champions tagged with Song of Celerity's aura gain movement speed refreshing every second.

Crescendo 100 Activation

Sona reaches the climax of her performance canceling all active auras to channel them into an irresistible chord that travels in a line stunning all enemies for 1.5 seconds and has additional effects for each aura Sona had active.

Hymn of Valor--Enemies hit with Crescendo will take an additional % damage for 3 seconds. Aria of Perseverance--Enemies hit deal % reduced damage for 3.5 seconds. Song of Celerity--Crescendo leaves a area behind it's path for 4 seconds slowing all enemies standing on it and speeding up all allies.

So the idea of this is to get away from the 1 time "aura" in favor of the persistent aura's we all loved without having them being "fire and forget" that riot hates. Instead they are constantly channeled consuming mana every second, up to a total of 100 mana, but granting their effects multiple times and even putting a form of power chord on her allies. This gives her that feeling of being a musician playing her concert and having the people listening being "moved" by her music. Additionally I wanted to add what I felt like was much needed interactions with her ult and so I moved some of her old power chord passives into her ult when channeling those abilities, but while it's a powerful ult you can't maintain all your auras and use it as it ends those auras and puts them on CD. The idea is that the "crescendo" would be the climax of her performance as oppose to just another thing she throws out.

Her W is now justified to have a low shield value, since it can be constantly refreshed every second as oppose to lasting 1.5 seconds and being gone. Additionally I would frankly just remove all utility scaling from her in favor of higher base values, as frankly early game is where supports need to be strong with decent utility to play off of into the late game as oppose to needing to build AP to make the utility of their kit worth while. It could be debated if aura ranges should remain the same or not with these changes and the auras now lasting until canceled and being refreshable.

Not gonna say it's perfect but I hope it's a least a starting point for discussing Sona and hopefully get some changes to her that will return a lot of her old flavor but no completely give up on the direction riot wants to take her. Anyway tell me what you think, if you like the direction or have other ideas that can work with this.

For a champion who isn't viable, 8% playrate and 52% win rate seems pretty good to me honestly.

Martyrofsand4 votes

So first post contains nothing but win rates that has consistently proven to be absolutely worthless when evaluating a champions viability...sigh hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

Jamaree3 votes

I'm just saying that this always happens with champions, like every single time. People complain that they aren't viable and weren't that bad, if win rate and play rate don't decide if a champion is balanced or not, what does, what if her current form is balanced just no one knows it yet?

Martyrofsand4 votes

The problem with using win rates to decide if a champion is balanced or not can be seen on several areas.

Amumu is perpetually around 54% win rate, yet has never been seen of OP or really even that strong for anywhere but bronze.

Lee Sin hovers around 46% win rate and yet the term "Lee Sin bar" has been a thing for a while in which the only champions that are viable in the jungle are the ones that can compete with him. That bar has gotten lower with the tank meta but it still stands to show how irrelevant win rate can be.

Leblanc is sporting around a 47% win rate and is considered one of the better, if not best, mids in the game right now.

One of the biggest reasons you can't use win rates as a means of saying "oh this champ is fine" or "well that guy is OP" or "this guy is weak" is because there is so much more that goes into winning a game than simply 1 champion. Hell it's possible to get completely destroyed in lane, go AFK and still win in this game. What you want to look at when seeing if a champion is good or not is how they interact in their positions and against their competition. Right now Nami does everything Sona does, and then some, providing better healing, more slows, more CC and some very strong move speed buffs of her own. This isn't even accounting for picks like Annie who can all in lvl 2 Sona with her ADC for a 99% guaranteed free kill due to how squishy Sona is, or how sona is insta-dead as soon as a Thresh hook lands regardless if she is ahead or not.

You want to completely ignore all of this and instead spout "deh win rates" and all it does is make you look ignorant about the current state of Sona and the problems people face when playing her.

Failing to mention that Nami is also a much more complex champion than Sona is, and should be rewarded for better play. Sona also has much better poke than Nami does, expecially if she has a little AP.

Now onto your next point, why complain about Sona being squishy? That's her weakness, every champion in the game has some sort of tradeoff for what they do, be it resource costs, long CD etc. Sona is countered by all ins and burst, as it should be for a champion with so much utility in a kit. The better question would be why pick Sona against Annie? Thresh I can see if you're confident you can dodge his skills, but picking Sona into a burst lane is just stupid and so is using it as an example of how Sona is weak. All it does is show Sona has weaknesses as it should be.

Martyrofsand4 votes

I would be ok with Sona having weaknesses, exactly like she used to pre-rework. The problem? Right now she doesn't have any strengths. Thresh/Leona/Blitz/Annie/Lulu/Janna/Zyra/Morgana/Nami/etc etc every single support in the game right now either out right beats her in lane or provides stronger utility during the team fights making her weak at all phases of the game and giving her no real good match-ups in which to be picked in.

If she get blown up by Leona/Annie lanes, had a skill match-up against Blitz/Thresh/Morgana, and could beat out lanes that lacked sustain like Braum/Janna to stop their lane from mattering much once team fights start I wouldn't be posting this thread right now, but that isn't the case. Right now she simply does nothing but get wrecked in lane, or go even and get beat out by superior utility and then have to depend on her team to carry her to win. It's rather depressing.

Nami:

  • AD - 51
  • W - 70 base, 50% AP
  • E - 75 base, 60% AP
  • Total - 196, 110% AP

Sona:

  • AD - 50
  • Crecsendo - 28 base, 20% AP
  • Q - 40 base, 50% AP
  • Q not-aura - 20 base, 20% AP
  • Total - 138 base, 90% AP

I don't know who started the misconception that Nami does less damage, but it's absolutely false. Nami doesn't even need her bubble, she blatantly does more with just point-click damage alone.

Compare the mana costs and see who can do it more often, stop fucking ignoring the points that counter your argument. You're also comparing two skill to a single one, of fucking course it should be higher damage you idiot. Jesus Sona mains are delusional.

Compare the base mana and see who can do it more, stop ignoring the base stats that are hard mathematical facts.

Lol, I gave Sona a handicap by not including Aqua Prison and you cry foul comparing 1 damage spell to 2? Guess what, SONA ONLY HAS 1 DAMAGE SPELL. If you want to get technical Staccato is 3 spells, so as a matter-of-fact, Nami outdamages Sona's 4 spells by only using 2. However, I'll set that fact aside and play your game for a bit.

So we're comparing spells 1v1? Alright, no problem:

Hymn of Valor: (40+20) base Ebb and Flow: 70 base

Hymn of Valor: 60 base Tidecaller's Blessing: 75 base

Hymn of Valor: 60 base Aqua Prison: 75 base

Let me remind you, the Nami player isn't going to stand around waiting for Hymn to come off cooldown for a trade. She's going to get in free harass while you're defenseless, contrary to your rainbow and butterfly fantasy.

"more complex champion" sorry but when a champion can be regarded as "X champion 2.0" whether one is more complex than the other is a dumb point. Why would you pick Sona over Nami?

Sona has utility? most supports has more utility than Sona and Sona gets countered by anything that's not a Soraka/Janna lane. There is a difference between having a clear strengths and weaknesses and having so few strengths that it gets buried without little hopes of having them shine due to how crippling her weaknesses are. Sona as she is right now is a champion that if she doesn't get ahead between lvls 1 and 3 she will be relegated into an ult bot for almost the entire game unless her jungle comes and saves her

Let's see what little "Utility" Sona brings then. Mini exhaust, Strong slow, AoE shield, Heal, enhanced AA, AoE Stun, AoE MS boost.

Yeah, no utility in that kit at all. You're completely correct in saying that Sona has less utility than any other support. Fun fact, while Sona may not bring as much of a single type of utility, she brings a good bit of everything. So when she's strong, all that utility she brings is strong which makes her a little overbearing. Bring up better examples of the lack of utility she brings. AND FOR FUCKS SAKE, STOP COMPARING HER TO NAMI TO DO IT.

Nami does has more hard CC than Sona, know why? Because the CC is tied to a predictable skillshot. Know what happens if the enemy dodges Nami Q? They don't get CC'ed. Then what does Nami bring? A heal and an AA enhancer that slows. If she's 6 she also has a very slow moving ult that can be flashed over. Sona brings unavoidable damage with her Q and enhanced Autos, as well as a heal and shield. If she's 6, she has a very fast AoE stun as well.

she brings a pathetic heal and a pathetic shield that you should only use as a last resort thing in lane while being hardly useful if at all outside of the laning phase. She can bring ONE of the following, mini exhaust or decent slow, her ult, an AoE MS boost that due to how it is usually the last skill you rank up remains useless for almost the entire game and an enhanced AA that only works for one attack. Nami can bring a heal that can damage people (or vice-versa), an AA enhancer that also slows for the next 3 autos, her ult, and a mini stun/knockup and with every single one of those skills actually providing a small ms boost. I will compare her to Nami because NAMI IS SONA 2.0 whether you want to admit it or not. Nami provides just as generalized utility but she doesn't come with even half the weaknesses Sona has. All Sona has over most supports is her poke and even that means nothing WHEN EVERY SINGLE GODDAMN SUPPORT COULD CARE LESS ABOUT IT. If Sona gets even behind in the slightest she is done and only has an ult to offer for the fights. Her shield is way too small and doesn't last long enough to be of any real use and her ms boost requires you to snuggle everyone together literally placing a giant "place all your AoE damage/CC here" sign

Tell me ANY lane that's not a Soraka or a Janna lane that Sona doesn't have to be afraid 24/7 of pretty much EVERYTHING that the opposing support has to offer? maybe Lulu but she provides so much better utility and will outright win any poke trade Sona ever even tries to throw just by using her auto attacks

Jamaree4 votes

Then what do you use as an example to determine if a champion is balanced or not, and if she is weak, what is stopping her from getting even the tiniest buff and going back to her pick/ban rate where she did more damage then the ADC during the laning phase, where she poked you from well out of the range of your AAs and abilities then darted back into the bush with little to no penalty. You use Annie as an example saying she pops squishes yet act like Annie can't do the same to Nami, or that Nami doesn't instant die to being thresh hooked too.

Are we doing to ignore the fact that Sona's heal has more range and provides a shield of Nami's? Are we going to ignore the fact that Sona can realistically give her speed boost to an entire team where Nami will be lucky to get three? Are we going to ignore the fact that Sona's ulti is instant cast and can't be avoided wheras Nami's can?

If you want to completely ignore things as well, it only seems fair.

Martyrofsand4 votes

Sona's heal provides a shield that will rarely be used in many situations. It's a heal that is often used after trading to recover, making the shield largely pointless. Will you have those moments in the middle of a fight where you use it? Sure so it's going to be like 1 in every 5 or so casts the shield gets used vs Nami who's heal not only heals her ally but deals damage to the enemy while providing a move speed buff to her ally. You sure you really want to play "compare the heal"

Nami has 4 abilities that do damage in addition to her AAs, Q/W/E/R all do some damage to her enemies. Sona has 2 abilties, her Q and her R, with a passive that can buff her AA every third ability cast. Again I ask you do you really want to try this comparison of champions because I promise you, it won't go well for you, it already is going rather badly.

As for move speed buff Nami consistantly gets all of her team if she uses her ult correctly, and gets many of the enemy team as well it's a disengage/counter engage tool not a hard engage it's one of the few areas Sona/Nami's kits have some difference being that Sona's can be strong engage and decent counter/disengage and Namis is strong disengage/counter engage and only so so engage. Also no Sona can't realistically give her speed boost to her entire team. With the small area range and the risk of AoE damage, especially all the AoE going out from Sej/Shyvana/Jinx/etc etc right now getting into range to give it to your front line is suicide.

Also Nami doesn't insta-die to Thresh/Annie like sona does. Want to know why? Higher base stats, and CC before level 6. Level 2 Annie all ins? Cool as soon as she flashes bubble her ADC and simply walk away and heal up laughing as their burned their flash, level 6 it does kinda change has Annie's bursts gets really strong with Tibbers but by that point you at least have sightstone which helps to some degree with it. Thresh lands a hook? Cool again bubble the ADC and walk away. It isn't hard to survive as Nami when hit by those things, Sona it is a practical impossibility provided your opponents have some measure of skill.

So what you are saying is that Sona's heal should be as strong as Nami's in all situations, it already gives more life in theory, why would it need to give even more, there needs to be downsides of some kind. Yes, Nami's heals and does damage, in turn, Sona's heals and provides a shield, Nami's will do damage, Sona's will save you from a DoT.

Nami has 4 abilities that do damage in addition to her AAs, Q/W/E/R all do some damage to her enemies. Sona has 2 abilties, her Q and her R, with a passive that can buff her AA every third ability cast. That isn't how balance works, there is going to be a give and take with everything. Yes, Nami can do more damage, Sona gets more raw utility. If every champion was based off being good simply off how much damage they did or didn't do, Amumu needs a nerf and Nunu needs a buff, I mean he can only do damage with two of his abilities and Amumu can do it with all four.

You don't use Sona's ability to engage obviously and you don't start in the front line, different champions and different situation. It is a chase option and you yourself are saying that each champion is used for different situation, you use it at the start to engage, then set up with your ulti, that once again, can't be avoided. Even then, you aren't even factoring in that fact that she should get advantages because her kit can actually miss, yeah, she gets CC early on over Sona, but that is because her CC can actually miss, you dodge the bubble and it is an utterly wasted ability, you can't dodge any of Sona's kit unless she misses her ulti, it is going to hit you, you can dodge Nami's ultimate however

Also Nami doesn't insta-die to Thresh/Annie like sona does. Want to know why? Higher base stats, and CC before level 6.

Nami's base armor is lower then Sona's during the laning phase and Nami has better base HP...level one to three, and now even by a reasonably large amount either, want to know the lives of the two champions between 1 to 6?

Nami: Level 1: 489 Level 2: 563 Level 3: 637 Level 4: 711 Level 5: 785 Level 6: 859 Sona: Level 1: 482 Level2: 559 Level 3: 636 Level 4: 713 Level 5: 790 Level 6: 867

And here is armor

Nami: Level 1: 19.7 Level 2: 23.7 Level 3: 27.7 Level 4: 31.7 Level 5: 35.7 Level 6: 39.7 Sona: Level 1: 20.5 Level 2: 23.8 Level 3: 27.1 Level 4: 30.4 Level 5: 33.7 Level 6: 37.0

So Sona's is better early for all ins then

Level 2 Annie all ins? Cool as soon as she flashes bubble her ADC and simply walk away and heal up laughing as their burned their flash,

Then she and the ADC dodge your bubble and you die anyway. Whereas with Sona, I can shield myself and my ADC and give us the dualing advantage, or wait, that doesn't count because reasons.

level 6 it does kinda change has Annie's bursts gets really strong with Tibbers but by that point you at least have sightstone which helps to some degree with it. Thresh lands a hook? Cool again bubble the ADC and walk away. It isn't hard to survive as Nami when hit by those things, Sona it is a practical impossibility provided your opponents have some measure of skill.

What if you miss the bubble? You can't dodge any of Sona's kit, you have to factor in that Nami's kit actually has a bit more complexity to it, or should the champion who can't miss her abilities be outright better then the one who actually has to try and hit hers?

Martyrofsand4 votes

1--You compare armor when Annie does magic damage.

2--You said Sona has more utility than Nami when Nami provides more CC, more healing, more slows, and more speed boosts.

3--Nami's heal will also save you from a DoT that is what raw healing power gets you.

4--So you are making the assumption that Nami is bad as your basis for your argument. That would be like me saying "Sona misses every ult so you are wrong and she is weak." The "player are bad and miss spells" argument does nothing for you here.

5--Sona won't be healing and shielding anyone, she will have died in the stun, Nami on the other hand not so much.

As you have yet to add anything valid to this discussion and have done little else than hijack a thread that was suppose to be about potential changes to a champion in order to properly represent her lore character design, and once again make her reasonably strong I'm going to ask you to either actually discuss the topic at hand or leave. I'm done refuting this worthless "my win rate" argument that has been disproven so many times for so many champions at so many points and times in this games existance.

You want to completely ignore all of this and instead spout "deh win rates" and all it does is make you look ignorant about the current state of Sona and the problems people face when playing her.

Oh the irony. It's so strong

Amumu used to have one of the highest ban rates in the game. He was definitely seen as op outside of bronze even if it wasnt for too long.

Yeah the term lee sin bar was a thing. Now with 0 changes he is out of the meta but still maintains about the same winrate. Leblanc actually rose in winrate from her norm of about 44~45%.

Oh my christ I am tired of seeing the ignorant as hell comparison of nami and sona. You wanna know what nami does better than sona that you sona worshipers choose to ignore? She loses more than sona too. LOSES MORE THAN THE CHAMPION YOU CLAIM SHE IS BETTER THAN. Sona is picked more and wins more. The only thing she doesn't do more than nami is miss her Q's because she cant.

How can you even use the word ignore and then ignore the fact that after all of her nerfs sona still maintains a 52%+ winrate. Sona used to be immensely stronger and after all of her nerfs she still wins more than half the time. I'm just gonna put this one in bold so you have a harder time ignoring it.

**You are asking riot to buff a 52% winrate champion for no reason other than you want them to. Remember thisAhri **

Do any of you ever have to pause and say to yourself "Gee I am actually claiming the champion who wins more than most of her class while requiring no real mechanical skill in comparison to her peers is weak. I should stop because the only people agreeing with me are basically people using the same bad reasoning." I know the answer is no but one day one of you will think this and your mind blow up faster than a thresh hooking a zyra.

I would be pissed off if Sona, who requires minimal skill, outright beat champions who have to actually use skillshots, lack sustain, and had longer cooldowns and you should be too.

{quoted} This isn't even accounting for picks like Annie who can all in lvl 2 Sona with her ADC for a 99% guaranteed free kill due to how squishy Sona is, or how sona is insta-dead as soon as a Thresh hook lands regardless if she is ahead or not.

You know who else this applies to? Every non tank support in our game. The only ones complaining about it. You guessed it sona players.

Martyrofsand4 votes

Lee out of the meta? You must the smoking something, after all he was only drawing bans in the UoL vs SK games because every game SK picked him UoL lost. Teams that have a jungle who can play Lee still play Lee and still have a lot of success with Lee. He hasn't left the meta and he never will with his current kit. His role may decrease or increase but he will never be out of the meta.

And again you run to your "meh win rates" argument BECAUSE YOU HAVE NOTHING ELSE. Champions stats, kits, match-ups everything completely disagrees with you and yet you want to fall back on "meh win rates" as if it means something, it doesn't. It's the last refuge of those unable to actually think about the game and understand the match-ups.

Also if you think Sona requires no skill simply because of a lack of skill shots you are completely disillusion. Tell me what requires more skill and care to properly pull off the guy who can walk of sharp shards of glass and break nothing or the guy who runs over the glass with a thick pair of boots. If you haven't caught on yet Sona is the one walking on glass because one wrong mistake and she is SCREWED. Mean while pretty much every other support can screw up however they please and proceed to not care. "Oh Thresh missed that hook well he can just flay away any engage and try again in 15 seconds" or "what's that Leona missed her E well no biggie it will be back in just a bit and she is still in a safe place." As oppose to "oh Sona stood in the wrong place whelp she's dead." That is literally the difference. You can miss EVERYTHING with pretty much every support, fail non-stop but then get that one random success and you are GAME BREAKING, mean while Sona require perfect positioning, and perfect understand of the CDs of her opponents MULTIPLE TIMES just to poke someone down to where they might get a kill or force them out of lane. That you would actually think she requires no skill because of a lack of skill shots really shows your ignorance on full display.

Um also Annie doesn't insta-kill every non-tank support in the game now. I already addressed how Zyra easily gets out, and Soraka can drop her silence right as the flash happens to eat the stun but negate everything else before it happens, and Janna shouldn't be close enough for annie to hit her even with flash.

Except in Sona's case, it's been 10 months and players are STILL saying she's unviable and her professional win-rate is STILL 0%, even after several games. How much longer are you going to hold on to your Riot-worshiping farce before you realize they aren't omnipotent and factually hate Sona and Sona players?

Jamaree3 votes

When her win rate is actually poor.

Emmy Cha0s3 votes

So a 0% win-rate isn't "poor" by your standards.

I'm starting to understand just how deep-seated your Sona-hate and intentional trolling truly is.

Jamaree4 votes

Win rate =/= play rate, when people say unviable, I think 43% and lower and 5% play and less, Sona on the other hand still gets played in 8 percent of all games with a 52% win rate.

Edge of Daybreak2 votes

{quoted}

So first post contains nothing but win rates that has consistently proven to be absolutely worthless when evaluating a champions viability...sigh hope this isn't a sign of things to come.

You know what's even more worthless? Opinion.

BTW every single part of your ideas is flat out broken. The tooltips also need work as nowhere do you state how long the auras last for. Only a mana cost per second. Next you just made W cost almost her entire mana at rank 1. Really? Now a change like that would make sona actually not work.

Martyrofsand3 votes

The auras are a channel that have an activation cost and then require mana per second to maintain. They will last until Sona either deactivates them or until she runs out of mana.

Also there is a reason I didn't state numbers. A change like this would require a lot of testing to actually hammer that out, this was little more than an adjustment to her playstyle.

Let me guess everyone who isnt a sona circlejerker is on that list? Yeah I thought so. You know who else has a 0% winrate in pro play? the 50+ champions not being picked at all. That's a straight up stupid thing to try to use to claim a champion is bad. The fact that sona even got picked means that people who are playing this for money think she is strong enough to be picked. I love how you are now using winrate as your arguement as well yet it was completely bad to use that statistic before...The delusion intensifies for the sona circlejerk drones

"It's the last refuge of those unable to actually think about the game and understand the match-ups."

Pretty sure thats hyperbole (aka the only thing you have used so far) and not fact. Fact: sona is fine the numbers support his. You have literally said nothing that anyone would care about when it comes to a champion's balance because "it feels bad" doesnt mean shit to anyone unless the numbers back you up. Did you even read that bit about sona that riot dropped in patch notes. I know you didnt so here is the short version. Riot knows sona has counters. But she is still too strong for what she does. You have to actually try to be ignorant to not see this since the people you want to convince otherwise already stated their position on it.

"Oh Thresh missed that hook well he can just flay away any engage and try again in 15 seconds" or "what's that Leona missed her E well no biggie it will be back in just a bit and she is still in a safe place." There was literally no part of this worth replying to. If you actually believe any of this then there is no hope and im not gonna waste the time. I said minimal skill MINIMAL SKILL. Minimal =/= no skill. Good god can you not even read? The fact that you call people ignorant while showing your complete lack of understanding is baffling. I dont even think you can comprehend how ironic it is.

Supports stronger than sona. Her counters. Oh man that is shocking. Considering you think sona isnt viable and doesnt work I wasnt expecting anything intelligent from this thread but damn me for trying to shed light. So if pick rate and ban rate and winrate dont matter then all we have is opinion. If you are gonna argue that opinion is > than fact then we are already done here as this is all pointless.

Sona isnt hard to play at all. She has one skill I can fuck up. One. She has a great support kit and since you feel like arguing opinion there isnt much else to say other than that.

No you did not mention anything about zyra dealing with this at all read your own post please. Sona has more tools to answer annie than zyra does. Try to act like you know what's going on here. Unless you are psychic then you arent gonna use soraka's e in prediction of annie flash into w. Btw there are a lot more supports than just the top tier ones. They are all relevant when looking at sona's power not just the other strong supports.

I already addressed how those are flawed, I already addressed how Sona is out classed and I already addressed pretty much every failed attempt at a rebutle you have mustered. As a Sona main, I would absolutely love for Riot to bring back the infinite auras (infinite auras OP), but for the love of League, I would never want Sona to have infinite auras at the cost of mana-per-second toggles or whatever. Please no. She already is mana-starving pre-one or two mana regen items (depending what you choose to buy). Also, I think the resetting effects every second or something (like the shield you've suggested) would simply be too broken. We don't want Sona to be broken, becaues then Rito will nerf-fuck her again.

If anything, I'd rather Riot revert the nerfs to her. TT~TT (hi there Q-passive nerf--fair enough, that was OP. Hello base MS nerf--NO WAIT WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS RITO?. W nerfs? Fine, weaker healing at earlier levels--BUT DID YOU REALLY HAVE TO INCREASE THE MANA COST? Sheesh) At this point I think the only thing they haven't nerfed on Sona is her E...I mean...they didn't nerf her E, did they? D: (and the minor buff to R, as in the decreased mana cost is nice, but by the time the decreased mana costs set it, I never even notice that I'm using less mana because mana regen items are a must on Sona and I rarely run out of mana by mid-late game o.o)

I totally agree that Sona should have increased range, though...well, maybe for her E, that is. Maybe that's what they nerfed, the range of her E. I don't know numbers, but I'm pretty sure that's the lowest ranged skill she has, and it can be annoying trying to speed up your allies and they're just barely outside the range of your E, so you have to move sideways a bit to reach them because if you try to go diagonal and forward you'll be moving too fast for them to catch up (E OP, seriously. Trollololol)

In other regards, I've been browsing over the thread, and it seems to that 1) you really hate win-rates (though, not to brag or anything, but I have about a 50% win rate with Sona...which is balanced/normal, lol), and 2) you seem to be having trouble playing as Sona against...well, everyone? Namely Thresh, Blitzcrank, Leona (the so called "counters"), Annie, Nami, Morgana, etc.

I like to live dangerously, so I play Sona against everyone. Thresh/Blitzcrank support bot? Better go Sona. Trollolol, if you catch me with a hook, it's cuz I'm bad :P Leona support? I admit, she gives me the most trouble. But so does my E. Trollolol, catch me if you can, Sun Warrior Lady thing. <3 (nah but seriously, there's a slight delay to her...sword move thing that stuns you--I don't play Leona--so I just pop my E and speed away. She misses and gets mad, lol. Or sidestepping also works if she's trying to get you at max range. This also works for the above mentioned hooks) Annie support? Oh boo-hoo, she can stun me...if I'm stupid enough to get in range of her when her stun is up XD (Fun fact: I'm like 90% positive that Sona's Q range is larger than Annie's Q range. I'm not entirely sure, but often times I can poke Annie safely without her being able to Q me without coming closer) Morgana is the most annoying. Dodging her Q is easy, but that spell shield is Sona's weakness. Now that I think about it, Lulu support? Again, skillshots to dodge (though the polymorph is a bitch). Then other supports, like Nami, Janna, Soraka, etc. Sona can out poke them easily and trade with them fairly. Those match ups depend on skill. (Though a lot of the argument was centered on comparing Nami to Sona. In my experience, neither is better than the other. That's a skill lane right there...though I give a few bonus points to Nami for the Ebb and Flow...though that is also easy to avoid as Sona.)

Actually, all match ups depend on skill. Sona is one of those "high reward" champions, I would say. Sure, she's a one hit kill if you can reach her. Emphasis: if you can reach her. (reiteration: E OP) Despite the nerfs and the rework that took me some time to get used to, Sona is still one of my favorite champions to play. And I play her everywhere. Support, mid, top, Sona OP.

Also, a note on her passive, because someone somewhere in this thread mentioned how...lemme find it... Nevermind, I can't, there's too much text. But it was something along the lines of how her passive is not useful in teamfights. Because slowing a running away enemy that your team is chasing has never been useful ever. (Though the reduced healing effects of her passive/W is mostly useful against healing team compositions...like Alistar, Soraka, Janna, Nami. You use that right before the enemy support uses their heal, you've done a good deed). And the OP passive/Q has never been a problem ever (or a guaranteed kill, for that matter). And often times, people will doubt the damage that Sona deals (because 1) she's a super squishy support, why would she do any damage, lol and 2) because WHY WOULD YOU PLAY SONA WHEN LITERALLY EVERY OTHER SUPPORT IS BETTER THAN HER IN THIS META?!? psh, sure they are).

Again, Sona is lots of fun for those who can play her well. Should she be getting nearly as much hate from Rito? Probably not. Does she deserve some buffs? Please yes (at least the base movement speed, that's all I ask, Rito TT~TT). Tying all this rant back to the main thread: Increased range, yes. Infa-auras, yes but most likely never to happen ever again. Mana-per-second, please for the love of Sona no. Additional effects on Crescendo based on auras...possibly. That one could use some work, but it sounds very interesting.

Martyrofsand4 votes

1--Do I have issues playing Sona? No to be honest I win most of my Sona games but there is no really joy in it. Why? Because I know it's due to a lack of knowledge or understand on my opponents side. I've sat back and gotten to free poke Annie/Thresh/Leo/etc and all they did was take it because "OMG you want me to flash on Sona" mentality. People don't realize that if you are Annie and Sona comes up to poke you all Annie should do is Flash+stun you and you are going to die, and if the ADC is someone like a Lucien/Graves/Corki you are going to die before the stun is over. If I'm Thresh and Sona is hiding behind minions I flash behind the minions, Flay her and set up my hook, most times it's easy to predict her flash and line up your hook so you can hook even if she does which will again result in a free kill. Long story short if the other support understands the match-up Sona loses. The sad fact is right now very few people actually understand the match-up and they think "OMG Sona poking me then healing so OP" and the concept of "hey that flash button can set up your CC and result in a free kill you might want to try it sometime" doesn't even occur to them. It was comical at first to see how much I could get away with, and I got away with a lot, but over time it just got sad and I found myself saying "why am I not dead" almost every time I went to poke.

2--Sona's E is not OP and it never has been. That said prior to the rework it did have an undervalued use in combination with mobi boots and captains and that was team map rotations. The move speed from the E on top of the captains enchant resulted in very fast rotations that most people didn't even pay attention to. Now you simply can't do that because your team isn't gonna be cuddling up next to you while trying to pull a rotation leaving yourself open to any wombo your opponents want to throw at you.

And not to be that guy in regards to your "how to play Sona" portion but most of your games are against bronze and silver level of players. They tend to be players who lack an understanding of those match-ups and lacks the mechanical skill require to exploit mistakes their opponents make. Put simply I could run AP Soraka mid lane and prolly end up winning it doesn't suddenly make it viable or effective.

As for your ideas of my rework as I said earlier about the mana per second auras in order to make them work they would need to rework her starting mana to account for it, as she currently isn't based around such a system. This wasn't about making her perfect so much as getting the idea out there as a possible means of fixing the "they don't feel like auras or music" issue that Sona has had since the remake. Right now they need to do something though because a simple move speed boost isn't gonna fix her problems, and if they are determined not to increase the side of the auras, and not to let her poke be effective the only remaining option is going to be modifying how her auras work and remain active.

Sonasaurous3 votes

Wow, you're really are quite the opinionated asshole, aren't you? Lol.

Well first off, I never said that "this is how you should play Sona," I was just making a point that it's not the absolute end of the game if Sona is played against those champions. Also, the stalking to check out my MMR is cute. Sure, I play against bronzies and silvers (and occasionally golds) because that's where I stand. Does it matter to me that the enemy may or may not know how to deal with a Sona? No. What matters is that I know how to play the champion I'm playing in a variety of situations and can make it work.

Or are you a meta sheep and that's a no-no? D: Must always be OP champ!

Also, Sonas that abuse W early game and don't have a rune page full of mana regen clearly overestimated the heal. And please explain to me who would waste a flash to maybe CC the support?

And her E is definitely one of her underrated skills. It definitely helps her with map presence and, honestly, the range as it is is good enough for its main purpose, which is typically getting teammates in and out of fights (typically Sona, because she's aura based, is within aura range of her team. Rito did that on purpose. So it's generally not a problem to get the aura to hit all four teammates when they're all grouped together).

I also don't think increasing her base mana regeneration would help that much with mana-per-second skills, because Sona uses a LOT of mana.

Sona, for the most part, is fine as she is now gameplay-wise. If you think she's weak and in a bad place, then maybe you aren't playing Sona very well? (Oh, ouch, but what do I know? I play with bronze and silvers, therefore I iz r bad and thingzzzz) As for the music theme, they enhanced that with something called DJ Sona.

Martyrofsand4 votes

Opinionated? Sure but it also helps I have a decent level of understanding on this game to back it up.

You ask "who would flash to CC the support" to which I answer "the guy who wants to get their ADC fed and start snowballing the lane." That you have to actually ask that question is rather silly considering level 2 all ins are one of the most effective ways of gaining lane domination in bot lane. Heck want a prime example of what a level 2 all in gets you?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vhLpx9D6Ak

Skip to 2:25 and one thing to note is Jinx's base stats are higher than Sona's and Vayne is one of the weakest early game ADCs and yet it's very clear just how good the lvl 2 all ins are when you do them correctly. Feel free to watch that entire game and realize just how much of an advantage they got from that level 2 all in and what they where able to do with it. If after that you still want to ask "why would anyone flash to lock down the support" which in the case of Sona should be read as "why would anyone flash to lock down a guaranteed kill" then there is no real helping you in this regard.

It may not matter to you what level your opponents play at but when you are going to come into a thread talking about how you do all these awesome things with Sona and want to talk as if she is good and say it's a skill thing than you better be playing against people who know the match-up so you can speak to your skill instead of their lack of skill, and that is all your little thing about how to play Sona did.

If your team is close enough for your E to effect them are also close enough to be hit by...

Orianna ult Sej ult Sion ult Sion Q Rumble ult Trapped in J4 ult Malphite ult Wukong Ult Any AoE spell in this game ranging from the annoying to the game breaking.

If you are getting good use out of them and not being punished again you are playing against opponents who don't know how to exploit the poor positioning required actually trigger those effects.

Sona right now is far from fine gameplay wise, and no a skin with DJ in the name isn't going to suddenly fix how screwed her gameplay is in regards to her character. What they did to Sona would be like if they decided "you know let's take Thresh and completely remove all abilities he has that have to do with chains/jailing/capture/etc and instead give him a bunch of spells that heal his allies and remove CC from them, that seems appropriate for someone we labeled CHAIN WARDEN." It doesn't fit, it will never fit, and if they actually want to restore any assemblance of character to her it needs to be changed.

Sonasaurous3 votes

Alrighty, thanks for the lesson on another way to play League of Legends that I didn't ask for. I'm going to stop the nonversation about how there are many ways to play the game (a very large champion pool and variety of play styles kind of so that), as that will clearly go no where fast.

So let's go back to the thread topic: changes to Sona. If anything, it seems you're the only person with a serious problem with how Sona currently is. And I'm not entirely sure why you care so much because (since you stalked me first), it would appear that you haven't played Sona in a very long time. So essentially you're doing the thing psychology tells you to do, which is avoid the stuff you don't like. Good job.

But sure. Let's ask Riot to change Sona (again). Though your suggested changes are beyond broken for the most part. And currently Riot is in a "everyone should be a skill shot champion" mindset. At least Riot kept the auras when they changed her. Imagine if they didn't. You'd be stamping your little foot so hard it would get stuck (assuming it's not already).

I think if they were to do major changes to Sona, they would definitely add a skillshot (most likely to Q). If anything, I think Riot needs to find a way to make a healthy gap between good and bad Sona players (not a LeBlanc sized gap, that's a little unnecessary for the type of play style that Sona has, but a gap nonetheless), because currently the only thing a good Sona has over a bad Sona is positioning.

Martyrofsand3 votes

I haven't played Sona in a few weeks, mostly due to learning Lee Sin and not wanting to handicap myself in ranked by playing her. You seem to have this dillusion that I am the only person who has a problem with the current Sona and are ignoring all the negative feedback the rework initially recieved the diamond Sona mains that have left the game, and frankly that isn't a diamond only phenomena. Hell you are ignoring the 100+ response "save sona 2015" thread floating around here as well. It is far from a just me thing when it comes to disliking this rework.

Also no riot did not keep her Auras because what she uses now is not an aura. What she uses now is an AoE 1 time only buff an aura is something with a lasting effect that remains until you turn it off. Nothing that Sona uses resembles that right now.

Pika3101 votes

At least Riot kept the auras when they changed her.

Since you apparently haven't seen Sona since the gutting, she actually does NOT have auras anymore. They stripped her of them and put weak, single-use, 350-range, short-duration effects in their place.

Sonasaurous1 votes

The in game tooltips call them "temporary auras", so that's what I will call them.

Pika3101 votes

[deleted]

Sonasaurous1 votes

That...escalated quickly and irrelevantly...

Fine, you clearly want to get very technical about this. Auras in themselves are AOE effects, are they not? With the exception of global auras (which, I think as of the Zilean rework, don't quite exist anymore?), all auras, items/skills/passives, have a range (am I wrong to say they have a range?). Sure, those ranges vary and the range for Sona's auras are not ideal.

The difference between Sonas auras and the auras of say, items or Janna's passive (for example only, I'm not trying to list out every single stat), is that hers are no longer infinite. Correct me if I'm wrong so far.

Before I get ahead of myself, let's review:

Auras: -have AOE effect -AOE effect within a range

Sona's abilities: -have AOE effect -AOE effect within a range -short duration

So it would appear to my clearly uneducated mind that the only real difference between infinite auras and temporary auras is the duration of the aura, but the temporary auras seem to be an aura nonetheless.

Now it's your turn; I'm sure you'll point out how stupid and ignorant I am.

And on a side note because you brought up food and "common-day" society (I think you mean "modern-day", but again, what do I know?), I'm pretty sure everything we eat is probably rat poison thanks to GMOs. Or is that a conspiracy theory and I'm narrow-minded for believing in it? D:

Pika3101 votes

Auras have four basic characteristics:

  • They are AoE spells, based on the position of the caster, otherwise known as point blank area of effect (PBAoE) spells.

  • They are instant cast, and have no cooldown.

  • They have an infinite duration, as long as the affected target is within range of the caster, and the caster is alive.

  • They are not dispellable.

http://www.wowwiki.com/Aura

  • A single-use effect cannot be an aura
  • A spell that requires cooldown before reapplication cannot be an aura
  • A spell that cannot be used while silenced cannot be an aura

Sona's spells fail to meet THREE of the 4 basic characteristics necessary to be an aura.

Sonasaurous1 votes

Wait...you're seriously citing a source for a completely different video game to explain League of Legends game mechanics?

GG. I'm done with this conversation.

Pika3101 votes

Because Merriam Webster doesn't have a definition suitable for gaming. Seriously, that's where I always check first. Like it or not, it's the first suitable definition that appears in the search engine. Information is usable as long as the source is reliable, regardless of what the source may be.

Martyrofsand1 votes

You missed the whol "aura have a lasting effect until they are canceled or the duration ends." Even a "temporary aura" should have the ability to maintain its effect over the entire duration, Tarics ultimate is a good example of a temp aura in that as long as it is active his team gets the benefit but when its duration ends its gone.

What Sona has now is nothing like this and it is more like Nami's E, IE a generic buff, without the multiple procs.

Pika3102 votes

I totally agree that Sona should have increased range, though...well, maybe for her E, that is. Maybe that's what they nerfed, the range of her E. I don't know numbers, but I'm pretty sure that's the lowest ranged skill she has,

Ranges on Sona's Q, W and E were reduced by 650-units each, a full 65% range reduction. Not only is E the shortest range on her kit(tied with both Q and W), but at 350-units it's also the shortest ranged spell on ANY support champ's kit in the entire game. The 4th lowest spell range is 500 on another support and every remaining ranged spell in the whole support class is 550 or higher.

Sonasaurous2 votes

^^ those numbers, thank you.

I'm not a numbers person, I figure all that stuff out visually.
