He's an immobile sustained damage mage.

Most mid lane players prefer burst champions and assassins who can kill in 2 seconds flat. Karthus kills everything equally over like 6 seconds, this means he is a bit slower paced then other mages, but he is still awesome when played right.

He's quite immobile, so people are often turned off by that. Being immobile doesn't stop Karthus mains from destroying with him though; you just need the skill to make up for it.

all he has is slow as his utility....

I thought your post was okay until the very end.

Clearly you're on something if you think Karthus' VU isn't amazing.

Never said it wasn't awesome, it's just Karthus isn't the type of archetype that appeals to the masses.

I disagree with that last statement, but the rest is fairly accurate.

Karthus has fallen out of favor because we have plenty of mobile, bursty champions that don't need to aim as much as Karthus does, and they don't happen to have one of the longest ultimate cooldowns in the game.

Karthus is an old-fashioned wrecking ball. He's immobile and slow to reach his full potential, but when he does... His teamfights (and even dueling, depending on your ability to land his Q) are absolutely stellar. Too bad mobile, bursty champs can do what he does plus... Well, be mobile and bursty.

Also, Karthus is supposed to be a spooky scary skeleton. Riot has some sort of fetish for catering to the whims of Tencent/the Chinese government and playerbase, so we can't have a non-fleshy Karthus.

Karthus is absolutely horrible against Zed and LeBlanc. They jump him, he dies because he has no tools to avoid death, and they jump out and he gets zero value from his passive.

This is pretty problematic because those champions are absolutely everywhere in solo queue. Ahri is a little better for him, but still pretty bad.

I used to play him a lot in Season 3 but he's never felt worth it in soloqueue after that to me. His late game isn't enough to justify his pitiful laning phase and what with mobility creep most people can get away from easily (and even kill him in the process).

I like Karthus, he can really hurt other champions. But he has no defense against someone that jumps on him. He can slow and incoming champion but it doesn't always help because a lot of champions have gapclosers and such.

If his Q always did double damage to champons and jungle mobs and triple damage to single target champs then that would be enough to stop champs from just jumping on him because he could two shot them in response. So he would be a high skill dueling mage. His ult should just kill Aatrox Zac Anivia someone ult-ed by Zilean and Tryndamere Olaf during their ults if they are low. Their passive do not go on cool-down if they were not already on cooldown. This way Karthus's ult is always relevant.

and they should cause it to break spell shields with post damage so only skilled players can doge the ult with good timing.

Karthus isn't that bad due to his incredible AOE sustained damage. If they keep standing in his E for even 5 seconds late game, with a full pen build, their entire team is gonna get wiped. He synergizes extremely well with Amumu, J4 and others with a long AOE immobilizing spell.

Also, look up TP Revive Karthus Pentakill.

blackcat13001 votes

Revive Was removed and no one stands in his aoe for 5 seconds he dosen't have any stun or root abilities.

I think someone else in here hit the nail on the head. He play slows and defensively for a long while. You have to play him carefully because he lacks any hard CC or mobility to help in an "oh shit" moment. Which is not popular in the current meta.

blackcat13001 votes

His Q dose not deal enough damage to cause an "oh shit" moment for the other mid laner or the ganking jungler.

Karthus' kit is immobile, constant AoE dps, is not what most people look for on a midlaner.

But I find him fun to play in certain game modes. I liked using him in Ascension, and I kicked butt with him in TT hexakill.

Why doesn't anyone play Karthus?

People still play Karthus D: (I mean really - LoL is the most played game in the world right now. It's statistically impossible for a champion not to get played).

Also - this question is usually asked about any champion that isn't one of the 1015 most popular picks, which can also be answered with that being statistically likely.

So - Karthus is still played, and being a popular champion is statistically unlikely.

Karthus waddles in a teamfight with his E, does lots of AoE DPS and then dies. And then he does it again for another three seconds. Those three seconds can change the teamfight in your favor. Problem is, most midlaners are too worried about their KDA to actually do that...

I main Karthus. Sure LeBlanc is a bitch. But most other assisns such as Zed and Tristanna are pretty evenly matched. Why?

E makes Karthus one of the most OP duelists. Switch it on when zed and Tristanna come. They lose more HP than you do early game. Q, meanwhile, slaps enemy champs for 100 dmg as early as lvl 4.

Karthus is that Support that assists in Kills not only with his ult but with his build - his AoE is easiest the 2nd largest [Now that Kindred came out] and his W slows EVERYTHING by 80% late game. Its usually that low hp enemies that counts towards the game.
