Paging Malicious Metal: how2gitgud with Mordekaiser

When I was new to the game, I tried Mordekaiser against bots during free week. I hadn't even reached level 16 yet, and found the entire experience traumatising.

Later, Mordekaiser was reworked, and I tried him bot, and the experience was traumatising (I was just a Silver, man).

Nowadays, he's my "for fun" pick, and I enjoy him immensely.

There's a problem though: I suck at him.

I'm struggling to think of a proper teamfight presence: I've taken to mostly using my W on the initiator and using the movement speed to chase into the fight. This may be suboptimal, because I don't get to Q people much (but when I do, Yasuos are deleted).

What are some advanced Mordekaiser tips and tricks, as well as suggestions on skills (I max W first and then Q) and item builds (I go Rylai->Swifties->Gunblade>Nashor usually)? You don't need to share the secret Mordekaiser tricks only you would know, but I'd be happy to understand why I would max a skill first, and what my teamfight goals are.
