As a new(ish) player, matchups break this game...

When you play against a certain champion sometimes the person you are playing is completely useless. For instance, if I play Riven top lane and I have to face Garen, I may as well just quit the match. There is nothing I can do. From what alot of my friends tell me too, there are many other matchups that completely break the game. So I ask...

Why? Why "balance" a game in such a way that when you are a certain champion, others can completely make you useless to your team? Is there something I am missing here? Some pointless "meta" as to why this is necessary? Or is it simply just, broken?

riven can win that match up, i've both seen it and done it.

Riven is much more useful late game than a garen as well, there are trade offs to everything in the game

edit - wait not kalista, she trades nothing for her insane scaling and mobility

This game doesn't really have any hard counters, but some matchups can be pretty rough without runes of experience with how to survive the matchup.

The problem is from lvl 2 that matchup is unwinable. He silences, then whirlwinds and thats it. There is no counter to that as Riven. There is 0 balance in that.

To have the variety and diversity that makes games like this fun, you will inevitably have some champions that just aren't as good as others in some or all ways, or are partially or entirely countered by certain other champions.

But that doesn't mean you can't learn to lessen or avoid those weaknesses. Bans are one obvious way to do that.

If you want balance, you shouldn't be playing a game like this; balance is impossible.

Any PvP game strives for balance, few, if any, actually achieve it. A game that has been around this long(in my opinion) should not have such broken matchups like this. Granted I am not an avid MOBA player but I have never seem something so "gamebreaking" as some of these matchups. I say game-breaking in a small sense as on a match by match basis.

For these bad matchups you then have to rely on the fact that your jungler is good and can properly gank, but by that time you are already well behind in CS, therefore gold, and level that it makes no difference in the long run.

Riven can win that matchup if you respect the value of level 2. If you don't, you lose it.
