Some math for context.

Ignoring runes and masteries, you have 2782 health. If X is your missing health, the equation for how much damage Garen can do is:

2782-X=525+0.4X

Ignoring Magic Resist, you need to be missing about 1612 health in order for Garen to do about 1170 damage. Add this together, and that is your total health.

In other words, the maximum possible amount of damage Garen can possibly do you you is 1170 damage. Anything more than that is overflow and doesn't matter (no such thing as negative HP, and Garen doesn't exactly gain a bonus for going overkill).

Seeing 2,100 true damage on the death recap screen is certainly a bonus for Garen xD

TehNACHO1 votes

Except Garen never sees it, only his enemy does~

PDE5 Inhibitors1 votes

Correct. I'm saying the enemy seeing it and "/all wtf 2k true damage on tank" makes it #worth

your only health item was a sunfire cape. this amount of damage is impossible from a garen ult with your health pool.

the problem is, that death recap always shows the full value of the ult. if he ults you at 50 hp, its gonna show a shitton of true damage. probably far more than 1.5k or something over 2k like you got, of which almost all of it is useless overkill.

in that scenario the ult actually dealt 50 damage to you.

if anything needs fixing, its death recap to stop people from thinking garens ult deals 2000 true damage on a regular basis, and show the actual damage values of the ult.

While the OP is wrong here, that ultimate is still a problem when you are the villian.

525+40% of the targets missing health as true damage means that if a tank is the villian, he can be killed by garen at around 50% of his HP remaining. In otherwords, you just took the tank out of the fight (whether he runs or you kill him) by lowering him to 50%. Thats overpowered.

Another reason its an issue is that it punishes successful junglers completely passively. I main shyvana jungle, and constantly fight myself in the situation where I can't gank top lane no matter how badly its going for my laner because I am the villian because of my success counterjungling or ganking other lanes. So despite my never coming or interfering with top lane I become unable to gank it due to Garen's ultimate. That is another problem with it.

I like the villian mechanic, at least on his q and autos, but the ultimate is a little over the top.

{quoted} if a tank is the villian

the villain is the champion with the largest killing spree.

if the tank on the enemy team goes on a killing spee before a mage, assassin or adc, then something is seriously weird.

the optimal case scenario for garens villain mechanic is, if it hits an enemy juggernaut. darius, skarner, morde or illaoi who just stack a ton of health and are prone to getting kill streaks.

in that case the villain mechanic is not a problem, its woking as intended. garens nieche is now to be a shutdown champ who tries to turn around games by hitting the fed guy on the enemy team.

I thought it was the person that got the last kill?

I thought it was the person that got the last kill?

its the person with the most recent kills, not THE last kill. it usually hits a carry on a kill streak. thats why the odds of the villain mechanic hitting a tank are very slim.

Ah, ok. Most kills in last 5 mins. I've been living a lie.....

Thats true in the late game. But I still think its unfair that Garen is doing nothing for that spike in power. I'm seriously not a fan of gameplay mechanics that require no effort on the part of the character that is gaining all the strength. This is one of those things.

Tanks are very capable of picking up kills in teamfights. Crowd control and base damages can mean you sneak in the kill against squishies, and this only gets easier when you pick up a thornmail. So its not impossible for a tank to secure a kill; especially when you consider the fact that the tank's team should all be bumrushing a target that gets cc'd (assuming a pick) so its basically a crap shoot for who will get the kill.

It also has implication in the laning phase. If a tank jungler picks up kills in mid because of successful ganks (hell or even cleanup) he becomes unable to gank top lane because garen automatically gains power against the jungler. For no reason other than Garen is level 6+. Garen hasn't done anything to warrent this threat. Its unfair and a bad mechanic to give him that much burst against someone who has not interfered with him at all.

the difficulty in the villain mechanic is that it is only effective against a single target that is known to both teams. making his effectiveness in a fight tied towards if he can reach the villain or if he gets kited and killed trying.

garen usually needs the support of his team to carry. in a regular teamfight he will have trouble reaching the villain and sticking to him on his own.

darius damage escalates the longer he stays in a fight and his potential for true damage is gigantic if he manages to spread the bleed and hit chain executes. hes designed around pentakills if he can keep himself in the middle of the enemy team.

garen is designed to be able to put the hammer down on one priority target.

this naturally makes garen a midgame/lategame counter to darius. while darius has a massive advantage against him early game and can destroy him in lane.

Actually I had a item 3065 Visage and an almost complete item 3071 when he ulted me. I specifically built the fucking item 3065 for him because their whole team was AD, which turned out to be completely useless since the SOB ult'd me for true damage! So I traded item 3065 for Frozen Heart since the only OP damage outside of Garen's ult was MissFortune's auto-attacks. Traded item 3071 for item 3153

Believe it or not, having less health against Garen was beneficial. When I had a super large health pool due to item 3065 item 3071 , he would destroy me with his ult at around 50% health. After my health dropped significantly in favor of Lifestyle/Armor his miscalculated his ults and I was able to survive, solely because he wasn't doing the OP amount of missing health damage. Which was leaving me around 10% - 15% health, so I was able to at least finish off Yasuo and/or MissFortune before Volibear killed me.

Garen's Ult = Sword of Damocles, which has no place in League of Legends.

If you don't know what the sword of Damocles is, look it up. If you do know what it means, then let me say this, you shouldn't be able to kill the king of the League, by cutting a piece of hair (ie, triggering Garen's ult).

that doesnt even make sense. garens ult damage has a base value and a missing hp scaling part. removing the mr/health doesnt cause his ult to deal less damage.

if you switch it for amor however it causes the rest of his kit to be less effective so you dont get into kill range of the ult in the first place.

2000 magic damage still dont add up. with such a build you couldnt have had much more than 3500 total health. if you had mr, he couldnt have possibly dealt this much damage with the ult.

no, i just explained it. death recap DOES lie. if he ults you on a couple 100 hp with that health pool, it shows 2000 damage because it includes all the worthless overkill.

think about it. if his ult dealt 2000 damage on your 3500 hp, then you would have had 1500 missing hp at the time. 40% of that is 600. together with the base damage thats 1100 total damage before mitigation and would never have killed you.

and you had magic resist which would have cut off at least 50% of that damage since garen doesnt have magic pen. the numbers dont add up.

he must have ulted you on a very small hp pool. something like 100 or 200 hp. and death recap showed the full damage of the ult, even if it in reality dealt 100 to 200 hp in damage to you.

K541 votes

It was TRUE DAMAGE! NOT MAGIC DAMAGE! I've said that like 100 times.

still doesnt add up. read again. with 1500 missing hp the absolute maximum he could deal to you was 1100 hp which would have left you with 1000 hp.

like i said. dont trust death recap. it shows total damage of the ult instead of actual damage you took.

also in your op you talked about magic damage.

Look at his build, it should be noted that when I wasn't the villain, this bitch ult'd me for about 1400 magic damage. 1400 magic damage ult and this bitch doesn't have a fucking lick of AP!!

K541 votes

That was after I sold my SV lol, forgot about that. My bad, you were right on that part.

Garen is fine if not overnerfed (special the MS nerf ) because at least back in the days when you were vs a range a champion you would go for boots and catch him up now you cant even do that any more....

So garen now only win lane vs a specif amount of champion which is dumb special when the game have renekton/gnar that can just auto win lane vs almost everyone

So yeah GAREN IS FINE his damage IS THE SAME FOR 6 YEARS NOW and you cry about his ulti MAGIC damage now? are you dumb? HIS MAGIC DAMAGE ULTI DIDNT GOT ANY BUFF

Zed... he can use thunderlords so his ult enhances the damage you take so you die super easily now...

Garens not op Its the items he builds

always been that way

items like ghostblade black cleaver zz`rot deadmans simply have too much syngery with garen

they make him too fast too tanky and deal too much damage

it also doesn't help that his base damage is insane and his scaling on his q is bonkers so he only needs a black cleaver and ghostblade and flat armor pen runes to outdamage some who built 3 damage items.

DeathBurst1 votes

The ult is magic damage, that doesn't mean it scales with AP.
