If you're fighting against a ranged champ, (gnar, graves, ext) maxing your leap is by far the best option. If you're fighting heavy armored champs, (malphite, ext) maxing w first is your best bet for good trades. As for combo's, it's best to aa+q+aa+w+aa+e+aa+e stun+aa and then q-ing out with your own caster minions (if you're running cdr). Builds are usually differential depending on who you are against but tri and steraks are always a good pick for him.

rune wise i think it's best to get yourself ad/ap pent marks, heath seals, mr per level glyphs and ad quints.

I always max his stun first, but I usually play him jungle.

There's a ton of stuff you can dig through on this site. It helps me out a ton when I try out champs^^ http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/items/jax/top/all

hes hard to play in low elo because split pushing is nearly impossible in an uncoordinated environment. hes terrible in team fights. no matter how fed i as jax or enemy team jax. they are really easy to shut down. a single CC and the are dead. he can certainly 1v1 anyone if not behind and sometimes 1v2. ( back in the rageblade op days he can 1v4). but hes just a typical split pushing bruiser now. just like other skirmishers the only way they do well in team fights if you have a team mate to dive in with you and put on some cc and take some damage for you and create disruption. they just insta die by themselves.

I'm level 6 with Jax and I'm Silver 2, but I mainly play him as a jungler. My jungle build with him is Bloodrazor, Trinity Force, Hextech Gunblade, Deadman's Plate, Spirit Visage. and usually Merc Treads. Sometimes Ninja Tabi if they have enough AD.

For top lane you want Trinity Force on him first, and then you can follow the rest of my build except maybe change bloodrazor to another atk speed item. Like Wit's End, or maybe Guinsoo's. I find him to be a very underrated champ right now. He may not be as broken as he was, but he is still a very strong champ with great carry potential.

Imagine if he had a real weapon.

(BTW he is popular in Korea right now as a jungler, and the most common build is something similiar to what mine is. After Bloodrazor and Trinity Force he has tons of damage, and Hextech gives him great sustain. Then it's just to get tanky from there.)

As for combos, he's really not that complex. Remember he can cast his leap on a ward for a great escape, and he can jump over walls. I've gotten people because they got to close to a wall and I jumped on them from the other side. His W, you can choose to empower his leap, or you can use it for an auto attack reset which is what I usually do. Helps build his passive and his ult faster. His stun does more damage if they attack you first so you have 2 options there. you can ready it before you jump so you can stun them immediately. Good for if you have back up coming or they're low on health. Or, you can jump on them first, try to get them to fight you and then start it for an advantage in the fight. It dodges autos and reduces damage from AoE.

Skill order: W>E>Q Max order: W>[Q or E next, your choice base it on your situation]

Time W at the end of an auto attack to have an auto reset to deal more burst in a shorter amount of time.

Try to make good decisions such as when to use your E, It's very easy to punish a Jax for mistiming his counterstrike or blowing it too early.
