Trying to figure out item interactions with Azir

Been on the practice tool and trying out what items work and what don't. Anything that says "basic atk" to proc off doesn't work with his soldiers at all, yet the soldiers stack the item. For example rage blade, you get the stacks up to 6 but no double hit/proc. Only the atk speed buff applied. Wits end doesn't give you any added bonus with soldiers at all..etc. Why does a item only half work...doesn't make sense to me.

Why? This is what is making Azir so damn weak. His stats and the way he is unable to heal in any fight makes him weak as hell.

Best damg item on him so far was found to be Liandry's Torment first, then with Nashor Tooth and Crystal Scepter

The stacking of Guinsoo's is an on-attack effect. Azir commanding his soldiers to attack uses his swing timer, so it counts as him attacking. Despite that, his soldier attacks are still spells instead of basic attacks, so they will proc only spell effects and will not proc on-hit effects.
