What I don't get about ADC's

If they are supposed to be DPS, why do they build full damage? You don't see Swain, one of the top DPS mages, building full AP. So why is it that the class every says is supposed to be the major DPS of the game, build like a burst mage?

Well technically burst mages are DPS. The amount of time never is specified...

Swain is kinda a close range AP fighter?

It would be better if you brought up a long range mage instead of a close range mage.

ADC itemization never changed through all those years

the only thing that changed is the decision of which zeal item you want, and occasionaly mortal reminder against mundo or swain

it was always IE+BT+zeal item+last whisper item+boot+defensive item that is now replaced by an other zeal item to get high crit

Clearly you don't pay attention, because the top tier ADCs last season were building straight armor pen + Black Cleaver.

and they stopped, which means my point stands still because riot wants them to build nothing but crit+ad+as

Their defense is Lifesteal.

And we tried tanky ADC's last year. Didn't pan out well.

umm pretty much, the armor is a benefit yes but its for the utility, constant slow. other wise triforce does more damage adds more stats sure you lose a little bit of mana

If they are supposed to be DPS, why do they build full damage?

Because if they want high damage per second, they would build damage?

Swain builds tankier because he has to wade into the middle of the enemy team to get his damage off. ADCs have a frontline to hide behind, and a support to help them through laning phase.

Because in order to get their DPS, and importantly, to get the fast instances of damage for effective DPS, they have to build multiple items in order to achieve that, items that do not have defensive stats.

A champion like Swain is encouraged to build tanky and he already has the fast instances of damage built into his kit; he does not have to build items for it, he gets them the moment he puts a point into the ability. Further, the items that a champion like Swain buys can offer him both stats for damage and defensive stats, unlike ADC build items.

Summary: Damage type (DPS vs Burst) isn't relevant for this. Swain can afford to build defensive items without undermining his damage effectiveness while ADCs cannot.
