Why Nerf Elise?

Disclaimer: I have never played Elise. In fact, I hate Elise. I play Mumu when I jungle.

That said, I have to question why Elise is the target of jungle nerfs this patch.

Right now Elise and Diana are really the only two viable mage junglers. Prove me wrong, but the only other mage jungler I saw all patch 5.15 was a Malzahar that accidentally forgot to switch with Shyvanna at champ select.

Elise and Diana both have different roles as junglers. This is a good thing.

Elise: gank lanes, get team fed. Team wrecks. Diana: gank lanes, get fed. Diana wrecks. Who needs teams?

They are both equally good at their jobs, respectively. According to na.op.gg, this past week accross all divisions Diana and Elise have a 51.77% win rate.

Despite their different play styles, Elise and Diana are really good at one thing:

**Countering all devourer junglers. **

Both Elise and Diana are exceptionally good at snowballing a team before the enemy jungler can become sated and dominate the game.

However, they are entirely dependant on those early game ganks to do so. Fail a few ganks? Your team will probably lose. This is the risk you take when you play Diana and Elise.

So why is Elise getting nerfed? Right now the highest winrate junglers are dominated by devourer junglers, with Mumu and Maphite being the only two competatively high win-rate cinderhulk users.

(Side note: late game mumu and Malphite also are hurt a bit by the new cinderhulk change. But if you let a devourer jungler get to late game you are probably going to lose anyways)

Xin: 54% winrate Warwick: 53.6% winrate Kayle, Udyr: 52% winrate.

These devourer junglers all have higher winrates than either Elise or Diana, and are really only countered by the early ganks that Elise and Diana bring, but Elise is the one getting nerfed despite having an identical winrate as Diana.

I feel like with the Elise nerf that jungle diversity is one step closer to becoming devourer diversity, so I have to ask:

Why nerf Elise when she is one of the best counters to the extemely high winrate devourer jungle meta and doesn't even have a great winrate?

Because she

A: Does have a great winrate.

and

B: Does so despite being permabanned.

This has little to do with devourer (which I will agree needs some goddamn nerfs) and more to do with the fact that elise is transformation champ cancer and has become pick/ban in the LCS again.

She is being banned because almost everyone has lost a game where Elise got all the lanes fed while Udyr/Yi/Kayle/Shyvana/Xin etc afk farmed for devourer. If I play Xin etc, of course I'm going to ban her - she is my biggest threat.

It's all about the early game. Other champions actually need to farm in order to have decent kill potential. All Elise needs to do is land all of her abilities, and you (or whoever you're ganking for) are pretty much guaranteed a kill. And if thing go bad, she can always rappel away to safety. Elise was simply too good in her previous state.

Lol other champions don't need to farm to have a decent kill potential. They can gank almost as well as her early game if they want to.

I think the nerf to Elise is because Elise has seen more play in the pro leagues than RIOT intended for her.

Player perception is clearly a strong factor in decisions about champion changes, particularly at the pro level. So it doesn't matter that Elise picks overall didn't show strong performances in the leagues, the fact that she was banned and picked so often in pro leagues was the important factor in determining a change was needed.

So when you look at Devourer and talk about the problems with it, it is important to note that we don't see pro players taking Devourer in the jungle.

Another good example of this is Shyvana. Shyvana is really strong but we don't see her played in the pro leagues.

Because in pro games where people actually know how to peel, no one takes devourer because you will either never get an autoattack off on a squishy or die before you get the phantom proc.

I guess never say never... that mid lane Kayle that built Devourer wasn't at all sucessful though, lol
