Rethinking Ranked Fives and Tuning Dynamic Queue

*if you feel this is TLDR, read the paragraphs with *** at beginning

riot youve already admitted how bad DQ is. you already know how we feel about DQ.

i gotta give you some credit for trying, but only for trying. borders will be nice and it will distinguish the solos from the boosters. it would actually be nice if you made the borders retroactive, for obvious reasons.

will adding borders cause a public shame situation for group players and cause people so solo more often? that remains to be seen in 6.13.

however, putting borders on does not change how DQ has changed the nature of ranked.

***playing with friends decreases the skill of the individual player. when you queue up with friends, youre playing with people who will perform individually, thus creating a team carry situation (versus the old solo carry situation). In the old solo q, you had to perform as an individual among individuals. and if you wanted to rise in ELO, you had to carry those individuals. Now with DQ, you can play with friends and not be as skilled as an individual player.

***DQ is also counter-intuitive to the ranked system. A "rank" rates the individual. Yet with DQ, an one may obtain an individual rating through group play. what ranked is supposed to be is an individual rating gained by excelling as an individual, not an individual rating gained by having good friends.

I want to pause on the DQ bashing a minute and take a look at ranked from the gamer's perspective. ranked is about being the best player you can be, always learning and improving, and getting better at the game. playing ranked is about the glory of that border and knowing that you belong there as a player and that your skill is on par with the level that you've obtained. so when there is a ranked system that has players ascertaining the same rank through premades, its a slap in the face to solo players and the entire objective of ranked.

***another incorrect assumption made by Riot is that premades=teamwork. playing with people you already know is not teamwork. thats like saying a kind person is someone who is kind to those who are kind towards him. no. where is the strength in being kind to those who are kind? where is the teamwork in cooperating with people you already cooperate with?

a truly kind person can be kind to mean people. and continuing with that parallel, a team player is someone who can play well with others, be a leader, and get 5 random players on the same page.

Bring back solo q and restore the ranked system to its former glory, competitiveness, pride, and integrity.

***lastly, for ranked 5-man data, refer link below https://github.com/richkcho/league_of_tilt/blob/master/other/flaws_of_dynamic_queue.md

So in the end what fixes they brought to dynamic queue?

0

cause the only fixe to it is to bring back solo queue.

this is, imho, the reason that people are upset about premades in DQ so much:

scenario: i am high bronze. my friends are mid gold and low diamond. we queue togather.

the average game that we enter into is mid gold. assuming the skill of the other team is more or less even:

i am very much likely to feed. my diamond premade will very likely own. the gold guy will come up even.

from a solo player's perspective the game has one feeder that can cause the game to lose and one super strong player. his ability to carry and contribute has been removed because the game is now either lost because my lane opponent is out of control, or won because my diamond premade is all over the place. the solo player, because of the skill variance in the game, has lost all agency over the result

No comments on bringing ranked teams back?

Riot, please ADD queues rather than substituting the new for the old. This crap's never going to get better if you keep it a zero sum game.

Players who habitually play with another few individuals will eventually pick up on their partners' play style and habits and learn to play around that. The little clips between professional games show this off very well when you see them talk about how they prefer aggressive top laners or aggressive supports. The more they play together, the more teamwork they inherently build up. This is why a lot of teams practice together and even live together sometimes. Through repeatedly playing together, they will eventually develop strategies and learn to coordinate their actions to win. This is what makes premades against solo players unfair.

Ranked is about being the best that you can be, but the problem is that you are measuring a group that plays together the same way you measure a single person who plays by themselves. I don't mind Dynamic Queue if they fully committed to make the game Ranked 5v5 only and drop Solo Queue altogether. I just don't want this half complete one that matches premades with solo players in any way shape or form because I believe that there is no way it can be a fair measurement of a player's skill. Premades should be matched with premades period. Allow solo players to opt out. Better yet, I would like to see how 3v3 or even 2v2 would play out on Summoner's Rift. That would be very interesting to see.

The idea of getting a medal for playing solo in dynamic queue feels like being compensatively forced into intercourse.
