Ulting a minion might be needed to save a turret/inhib/nexus in some situations due to the aoe knockback more so than the damage.

There is a button you can push to only target champions if you find the ability to target minions is an issue during teamfights or in duels, which I believe is ~ by default.

The knockback is in an area around the target. It is possible that hitting a minion would be the best choice for knocking back the enemy champion(s).

Hm, but that area is very small so you would always prefer to target the champion instead of the minion.
