Trist typically wants a Zeal item in her endgame build regardless, so let's focus this analysis on Zeal items:
- PD's main strength is primarily in its dueling power. You hit an opponent and they don't hit you back as hard. Tristana does not duel very much. It's harder for her to hunt people down due to her base movement speed, and drawing people to herself as a squishy adc is recipe for disaster, not success. Not to mention, PD's primary function is defensive utility. Between Tristana's long range, rocket jump, and knock back, she's super safe as is, and you're just adding on unnecessary fluff at that point.
- You typically buy Shiv exclusively for the wave clear aspect of it. When playing defensively, Tristana can easily appreciate an extra tool in defending from minion waves. Offensively however, Tristana's E passive alone makes her fantastic at just clearing through waves. While Shiv definitely has its value for when you need it defensively, it's just like Phantom Dancer in that it kinda is just adding unnecessary fluff, at least while Tristana's already in a position to shove lanes aggressively instead of, say, defend a siege.
- Rapidfire Cannon is best on champions that can poke hard or benefit greatly from it, or those that want the extra safety of standing as far away as possible from the team fight. We already addressed safety so you can see why the latter benefit of Rapid Fire Cannon is rather unnecessary for Tristana. On the other hand, Tristana's damage is far too backloaded to make any single shot count. She wants the benefits of her Q's Attack Speed and stacking her E up, depending on any single shot simply doesn't fit her as well. Caitlyn likes striking from far away and hard, Ashe can probably take advantage of slowing someone so far out, Draven will hit you like a truck for not respecting his extended range, but Tristana? It just puts a stutter in her step.
- Now the main benefits of Runaan's shines well. Its primary purposes is offensive, meaning we don't have the fluff issue going on with PD. While it isn't as good at defending sieges as Shiv, it far better complements Tristana's E when it comes to clearing waves. Finally, since its benefits shine best in damage over time, it synergizes perfectly with how Tristana's damage is backloaded and in general the play style Tristana likes to play. It doesn't have the major faults that the other items have on Tristana, and in general its just a better passive for her when your team isn't on the backfoot against sieges. It makes total sense that this would be the default option a Tristana would go for as a Zeal item and why you see others building it all the time on her.
Thank you my good man. Your extremely in depth response was most appreciated.
In addition to what Nacho has, it's the best team-fighting zeal item. Trist has the range to use more than one bolt which drastically increases her overall DPS in the team fight. Basically it's because of wave clear and team-fiighting.
