What makes a control mage different from other mages? I know that Azir is an example because of his soldiers but I have no idea what another champion has that makes them a control mage.

Any mage who can place something on the map where you wouldn't want to go imo.

Like Orianna's Ball because she may W if you step near it Veigar's Trap or Viktor's Gravity Field because you would be stunned if you touched it Azir's Soldiers because he can auto you and anything in your general direction Zyra's plants or Heimerdinger's turrets because they'll auto you Syndra's orbs because she can shove stun you Malzahar's Max HP%/s or Morgana's Pool because yea damage (Rylai's as well) Anivia's Ult because of the slow damage and following combo

Etc Etc

Control mages have CC and utility to control (duh) the flow of the battlefield, typically sacrificing damage in the process.

When you look at Anivia for instance, she could have another damaging spell instead of her wall (which is a pure utility spell), that would increase her burst, but lower her control.

They control areas of the map instead of just dealing damage.

Any mage with good zoning potential or hard cc. So ahri is more of a burst mage or LeBlanc. Where ori azir and veig are more control.
