League is as popular now as it was is 2010.

It's just google trends so it doesn't tell us the player numbers however it does tell us. What it does tell us though is that league is much less "popular" than it used to be. In fact, it's 1/5 as popular as it was as its peak in 2013. In case you're frustrated with the state of the game, know that Riots continued incompetence IS having consequences. League is the most addicting game I've ever played, you don't get people to stop playing it without SERIOUSLY fucking up.

Once a game gets a popular as League, less and less people need to actually search it.

That’s what that graph is, search trends.

i mean unless you copy over all the riotgames folder junk from a friends usb, you would have to google "lol download" or the like, no?

not nessicerily calling anybody wrong, but i figured thats probably the OP's reasoning for using this

If you know the website, you can just go directly too it, and as a first time viewer, there's a big "PLAY NOW" button in blue

This isn't just people searching for league of legends. This is people searching for builds, forums, winrates, tournaments, cosplays, events, everything around the game. That's why we loosely use the line to guess how "popular" league is.

Except then those search terms would be “x champion builds” or “league of legends forums”, or cosplay, events, whatever. What you looked up was people searching “League of legends”. Just those 3 words. Which tells you nothing.

Even then, you would also expect searches for champion builds to go down over time. Once you have experience with a good amount of champions, you get a general feel for how to build them just by looking at their kit.

I know that I used to religiously use build website my first year or two of playing league, but now I don't at all.

I will vouch for that. I don't ever use google to search for League of Legends. I use google to bring up Lol Wiki in a pinch, or I go directly to the League website.

In a vacuum, yes, and if those people are the exact same as they were in 2013, yes. But that was 5 years ago now, and teenagers then are in college or working, so their time for the game has decreased, and there's more marketed competition like Overwatch that can entice a younger crowd and hook them before they locate League. I don't think Riot is necessarily fucking up as hard as you're claiming, and your data is flawed because there are a great deal of factors that can contribute to this.

Search trends don't represent much though, I don't need to search for League to log on and waste 5 hours losing LP or to come and say things to strangers on a forum for a game.
