why is maokai being nerfed?

as it stands in the msi invitational, his ban/pick ratio is high, but is sitting at THE PERFECT 50% win rate, that is the defining feature of perfect balance in pro play... http://lol.esportspedia.com/wiki/2016_Mid-Season_Invitational/Statistics/Champions

going on champ.gg it shows his winrate ~53-56%(which is weird because googling shows it at 52.15%) http://champion.gg/champion/Maokai & https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=maokai%20win%20rate

lolking has him at ~53% http://www.lolking.net/charts?region=all&type=champion-winrate&range=daily&map=sr&queue=normal

and finally league of graphs ~51% http://www.leagueofgraphs.com/champions/stats/maokai

collectively if you average these all out ~=52% win rate...

I understand if he was Ryze 60%+ win rate, but 52% winrate as a supportive peel tank is opressive? I just don't get it, I played him quite a bit before his change and still to this day his shining ability is his ultimate, making him a use to the team, as he cannot do things by himself most of the time. He is a very strong peeler and front line defender, bringing some nice cc and lockdown, but beyond that, his damage is average, and his mobility is honestly slow minus his W's power.

Would people stop using winrates as the end all be all of who should be nerfed/buffed? He is way too oppressive in lane and pushes out a lot of top laners. As long as he is strong, the top lane will continue to be the most boring and braindead role in the game.

then please tell me what PHYSICAL evidence that we can use to prove that they are o.p or u.p that isn't based on blind opinions...

maokai is cancerous design and should be put back in the gutter

Been the best tank in the game for about 2 seasons now aside from tank Ekko but that's basically old Kass tier of broken so it doesn't really count.

Because he is basically considered the best top laner in the game after the broken pile of shit that is Tank Ekko in really high elo, and they're basically right.

ryze is a counter-pick?

Boulderox1 votes

no, I am using it as an example as ryze is sitting at a VERY high winrate, and that is a very bad thing for balance.

if he's predominantly played as a counter-pick that would explain his winrate. 60% isnt VERY high, you should look at blitz

I worried that he wont be able to jungle anymore :(. I have played jungle Maokai since release.

I'm guessing it'll add about 9 seconds to his first clear (which is quite significant), but afterwards not matter much as long as you level q first. I still think he'll wind up being stronger overall than he was before the last mr + sapling duration buffs.

Win rates are a small part of what Riot uses to figure out if a champion might need nerfs. Sometimes they even nerf champs with <50% win rates, because they have other things to consider. Anything over 52% though, with decent play rates, that's pretty likely to get looked at.

MSI winrates are meaningless, of course. The specific teamcomps and match-ups in a couple dozen games are not vaguely statistically significant.

Furthermore, the nerfs aren't terrible. His sustain is down a bit, and his q is down slightly longer in the very early game. You can't afford the mana to use it at the 6-second cd very often anyway. He'll be fine, just a bit less oppressive.
