Gold Runes?

So im trying this out, as a support, full Gold Quintessence(t3) and full gold seals. Just to see how well it plays out, I feel like it'll help a lot, but it still feels extremely weak.

Gold Quints used to be necessary, but the new gold items kind of forced that out. As for gold Seals, I'm not really sure. I never liked them, only because armor seemed to help a lot more.

If you're playing someone who needs items badly but can afford to play very passive, it may pay off. Possibly someone like Nami, Sona or Soraka? Gets you CDR and AP faster for more and larger heals. Nami and Sona's CC doesn't need any stats to function, and Soraka can afford to play pretty passive...

But passive supports, and passive play, aren't particularly meta.

I don't enjoy playing Meta, so this is okay for me.

I run gold quints on one rune page for two champions but I've only tested it a handful of times but so far it's doing fine. So here is what I run on Janna and Soraka.

Flat armor marks = 8.2 armor Armor per level seals = 27 armor @ level 18 Magic resist per level glyphs = 27 magic resist @ level 18 Gold quints = 3 gold per 10

The reason I don't get HP on these champs is because I'm greedy... and also because they're anti all in + they have inflated HP from abilities because they can heal or shield themselves and as such it's more effective to have more resistances to make each heal or shield more effective. That's my reasoning behind it anyways.

Here's some math that might help:

Your gold seals give you 2.25 gp5:

  • 108 gold at 5 minutes
  • 243 gold at 10 minutes
  • 513 gold at 20 minutes
  • 1053 gold at 40 minutes

**Masteries 1.5 gp5 **

  • 72 gold at 5 minutes
  • 162 gold at 10 minutes
  • 342 gold at 20 minutes
  • 702 gold at 40 minutes

**Quints ant 3 gp5 **

  • 144 gold at 5 minutes
  • 324 gold at 10 minutes
  • 684 gold at 20 minutes
  • 1404 gold at 40 minutes

All told...

  • 324 gold at 5 minutes (Your 1st back)
  • 729 gold at 10 minutes (your 2nd/3rd back)
  • 1539 gold at 20 minutes (Mid game/Roaming stage)
  • 3159 gold at 40 minutes (Early End game)

Now balance this windfall of free money with the opportunity cost of normal survival/damage stats:

Typically, your rune page, as a support, is supposed to help you survive the early game until you get items. If you don't feel like you need these stats from your Seals or Quints, then go for the free gold. That said, 9 armor pre-lvl 6 is HUGE. If you are going to go gold seals, I recommend getting armor Marks to make up for the loss. You obviously don't need the offensive stats, so some of the early survival will help.

** Your opportunity cost: **

  • Armor Seals are worth a flat 180 or a scaling 540.

    • This is equal to your gp5 seals at 10 and 20 minutes. If you can do well with just flat armor Marks instead, the gp5 seals are worth.
  • AP Quints are worth a flat 326 gold.

    • Thit this is equal to your 10 minute gp5 quint. If you can make it 10 minutes without the AP and do well, then the gold quints are worth.

If I'm against another support/ADC that I can easily poke without getting hit back, or I just generally feel I can win trades no problem, I just use AP Quints and Glyphs Hybrid Pen Marks and Armor Seals so I can hit harder and heal more (assuming I'm playing my main Nami). I feel the better trades and healing are more useful all around over extra gold Runes.

If I feel that the laning may be dangerous and I could get destroyed in a single pre-6 combo (Draven/Leona, lookin at you), then I go with Gold Quints and MR Glyphs and play safe.

Gold Seals I don't feel are good enough to trade the Armor for, but it's mostly because full Armor Seals are pretty popular.

TL;DR: Consider if you can easily sacrifice defensive/offensive Runes for the gold, or if it will get you killed.

flat armor quints are always better than golds unless facing ap bot which is rarity

Running GP/10 runes in a duo lane is an incredibly irresponsible and selfish option. It's extremely important to have the highest possible stats early on because you're facing double the CC and double the damage of an ordinary laner - the only time when you should run scaling runes is if the enemy lane literally has no magic damage (Xin Zhao support?), in which case scaling MR is acceptable.

You'll get punished for running empty runes so hard against a Lucian Braum lane.

Basically, you should think of all runes as gold generation - if your runes make you so tanky that you can stay in lane with your ADC for an extra wave, that's more than a hundred gold you've "generated" right there. If your runes make you such a high damage threat that you can force the enemy lane to back and miss a wave, that's more than a hundred gold you've denied your enemy.

Counter intuitively, if you're running GP/10 runes, you're trading away the ability to make gold in the ordinary way. And kills/minions/dragons/towers are worth a ton more gold than those runes are.
