What we really needed in a Galio rework.

As a galio player, Level 7 Mastery, and I was pretty high up there in NA with Mastery points; I'm both excited and disappointed with the changes. My personal belief is that galio, true, had issues; although, they were easily fixed.

  1. Auto Attack; Should have switched it from melee to ranged, but not incredibly so like an ADC caster. For someone who has AP scaling to not have range still has me dumbfounded, but then again Rito gave Shen AP scaling as well for whatever reason. Had you all thought to change his AA range to that of range it would make Laning with Galio so much easier than it is now.

  2. Passive change; I like the premise but just giving AP for building MR is a niche and nothing more. If you all were seriously trying to make Galio tank first, mage second as it would seem; You all should say that a portion of armor built grants X amount of AP and MR Gives Y amount of AP. Hell you should have said Armor gives X about of MR, and then that MR goes directly into the old AP passive. That way he still is relevantly the same premise but with a slight buff.

  3. Lower the mana cost on his Q (Slow). It's a great ability with an incredible range, does considerable amount of damage, but of course the drawback was the mana cost as was with a lot of Galio's kit. If you all had wanted to make him viable, taking a look at mana cost may have been a wise choice.

  4. Limit the things that can ignore the channel on his current Ult. In a game with champions being released in which all of them have like 18 CC abilities, despite having only 4 skills, it's beyond annoying when you used ult and almost ANYTHING could stop it. You all could have done something as simple as only Knock ups effect it or blah blah blah.

My concerns so far from what I've seen in the video, mind you it doesn't show too much.

  1. I have to agree his new appearance is pretty bad. Like hear me out. You all didn't even just take Aatrox's jump, but you made galio's default look exactly like Justicar Aatrox because you're recycling. Now, if it was Justicar Aatrox [A new skin] it wouldn't have been that bad. However, it's not.

  2. I'm impartial to the voice because it reminds me of one of the voices from the old Transformers cartoons, think it was Soundwave. I'm fine with that, despite galio's old voice was really good.

  3. The whirlwind thing looks to be a combination of his Q and E which I'm okay with; however, I really want to know if they serve similar functions or not. Will the Whirlwind act as a beacon that gives ally units Movement speed like an acceleration gate [Sort of like Jayce]? Remember, people who don't play galio; His E leaves a trail that gives allies movement speed. I'm all for Galio having a gap closer, means I wouldn't have had to flash Ult almost every time.

  4. Does he even have a taunt still? I've seen people say he does on his ult still, but the video showed nothing of it. Furthermore will it still be as devastating and useful in a teamfight as it was? Imagine, Riot. If you all are trying to make Galio a tank, as I suspect as to oppose to a mage; Why would you get rid of an ability that forces the enemy team to aggro him? You all ever play a MMO? That's like the ideal ability to have, and it looks like you got rid of it.

  5. I have to agree with people who are saying he looks like a combination of VI and aatrox. Which again, I'm impartial on; however, you took a kit that had a lot of unique aspects and replaced them with gimmicks that already exist? So much for wanting diversity.

  6. Seriously a question to Riot; His shield, which was great mind you, did you all have no thoughts at all about scavenging that or did you blatantly think it was garbage or useless? Why not incorporate a Shield, utility like ability, to ally team mates sort of like Karma's Shield with her ult? As a galio player who went him either Top, mid, and mostly support; the Shield was very useful when engaging {put on self} or for giving that barrier, MR & armor boost to the ADC.

Honestly, I doubt the masses will care very much on the account it's true that the player base on Galio was Low. I hope you all enjoy the new champ, because from what it looks like now he's not even close to the same concept or champion.

On your first points.

  1. I agree but not for the same reasons. We have AP champions with melee auto attacks, they are AP bruisers. Unlike Galio however, they had kits that worked in melee outside of an ult with a long cooldown.

  2. Your passive change is basically gaining AP from two forms of resistances and gets too complicated than it needs to be (Armor to MR to AP? The resistances to AP was fine).

  3. Everyone seems to forget that high mana costs on some abilities are because the ability becomes ridiculous when it is closer to spammable. You'd have to reduce the damage to justify allowing it to be used more often.

  4. Limiting it is tricky because you don't want to make the counterplay "don't be near Galio" especially with how much difficulty he has getting close to people.

On your second points.

  1. Yes he does still have an ult, I don't see why Riot would tell us he does and then show he doesn't the day after they told us. Will it be as devastating? Probably not since it's going to be a basic ability. But what it will lack in destructive power it will probably make up for in reliability.

  2. When you have over 100 champions it's hard to not see similar abilities. As long as a champion isn't a direct copy of another champion (Camille is waaay too close to Irelia for my liking, but Irelia will get reworked eventually) then it isn't a bad thing. Plus Vi and Aatrox are divers meant to deal damage to one target, Galio is a tank that's more focused on AoE, so he's doing a different job.

  3. Not sure what they wanted to do with his shield (maybe it's in his new passive, idk) but imo it did feel like an awkward ability to heal off the pain of allies without actually preventing damage (sure there's extra MR, but resistances are kinda weak without health and Galio would target his weaker allies). I think the shield could work on a new and more selfish champion if not Galio.

Edit: my second points argument is for points 4-6.

it could be saved if they gave him a new E. i could get used to full tank galio top/jungle if they just get rid of that god awful E (it'll probably be an E, that windgust ability) we still dont know the W.

looks are very lacking from what i expected from a VGU.

hes basically rock aatrox. malphrox if you will.

Critique the appearance sure, but I don't see what the point of critiquing gameplay is at this point. It's all just speculation. People say he looks like a combination of Aatrox and Vi.....cool, so what? We don't have any concrete justification for that besides that he has some sort of knockup. The ability may very well work completely differently than how we imagine, and it likely will given how unique the previous reworks have been.

I mean it's cool that you have all these opinions, but a lot of them will probably be invalid in 24-48 hours, so I wouldn't work yourself up too much.

This post would be a lot better if it was posted after his abilities were revealed in full.

Actually, from the look of the abilities revealed in this video https://www.facebook.com/leagueoflegends/videos/10158569724850556/ I feel a little better about the kit. Although, I'm still sad to see the shield is gone. I'm wondering if Riot can tell me if they incorporated it into his w (taunt) because it gives a shield. However, does it still do what the old one did or not? If it does, then honestly the rework wont be that bad.

As for the look, I'm still uncertain about it.
