Thornmail is hella expensive

So thornmail's recipe is chain vest + cloth armor + 1250 gold right? Why not let us upgrade that other cloth to a warden's mail or something? Seems like it would have a much better curve or something. A lot of the items now have huge combine costs even after purchasing their more expensive parts, but thornmail has this awkward... hole of non-functionality while waiting with just a cloth and chain vest. I dunno. Maybe just me.

Conversely, could we also get a magic reflect item? Something that "charges up" as you take damage, which you can then boom! fire off when you hit max, with a cooldown. So it would go a little like this:

**Zuanic Capacitor (3100g) **

  • Magic attacks charge up the capacitor up to (100-800) damage. At max stacks, expend .45 in an area around the champion.
  • 60 magic resist
  • 500 health
  • Recipe: Barbed Vest (1100) + Negatron Cloak (720) + Bami's Cinder(1100) + 180g

Barbed Vest (1100)

  • Reflect 10% of all incoming damage (after resistances) back as magic damage
  • 40 armor
  • Recipe: Cloth Armor (300g) x2 + 500g

And therefore, instead of Warden's mail, Thornmail's recipe could go like this:

Thornmail (2350g)

  • Recipe: Barbed Vest + Chain mail

I would really like if Thorn mail would be a component.

thorn mail would cost about 1250(Not as much armor)

-And you can build it to an item towards an item that life stealing on you isn't possible. (or applies grievous wounds) -A bigger version of thorn mail. -Maybe slow enemies attack you...

Or something in that area-

So kinda like what they did with LW?

That would also be ok.

Or, what about this Innovative new idea:

item 1031 + item 1031 + item 1031 = item 3075?

5/7 Perfect Idea

Spoofghoul13 votes

Or how about item 3075 + item 3075 + item 3075 = super thornmail.

Reflect back 50% of damage as true damage. 400 armor.

Rammus Ok.

item 3599 + item 2009 + item 3303= item 3075

Spiky cookie mail. Every time damage is taken, all of it is redirected to putting cookies in your allies' inventories, and each cookie heals them for 150% HP.

Gentlemen, we have made history today.

especially after the nerf....they raised the price and nerfed it. such a great bargain

Sadly, i dont see the point of building it in this meta, it is very underwhelming

That's because It only benefits one champion in the entire game's kit to the point of not being stupid pointless.Rammus 100 armor = 25 attack while stacking on his w.

The reason there is no Thornmail for magic damage is because physical damage dealers have life steal and so tanks can still deal with them. While Magic damage dealers often don't have spell vamp considering it's really niche and often a bad option, this would leave them even weaker against tanks, considering tanks already counter them.

Shouldn't thornmail be a little stronger because a lot of adcs don't get lifesteal and now focus on crit and CDR

Xyzaron2 votes

but the thing is, AD mostly buy lifesteal so that they can counter thornmail

but AP mages, can't but spellvamp cuz it sucks for the most part. So the return damage on Ap champions will hit them really hard

No they dont. They buy lifesteal because it's handed out like candy on all the good items and it makes their laning brain dead easy to the point where poke is irrelevant. It's all in or nothing. If all lifesteal items sucked as much as the vamp items (which conveniently were changed to not actually be vamp anymore), you'd see a lot less lifesteal being built.

Xyzaron1 votes

bruh, you only need 5-10 lifesteal to counter thornmail...

so a blade of the ruined king is enough...

my only problem is that you lose armour on purchasing the capacitor

lol yeah ur idea is odyns vail which is on treeline. SOOOO many reasons thats not on the rift but thanks for trying.

I think item 3180 works like that. They could just make it available in SR and call it a day. maybe nerf or buff it as needed for the mode.

I miss the days when thornmail actually countered life-stealing physical ranged carries. I like the idea of reflecting a percentage of all damage, though I'd suggest the reflected damage be the same type as what was initially inflicted. It'd be a more noticeable counter against vayne & corki, while not being overbearing against single damage type carries.

It's super expensive, but good.

I agree that thornmail is in a bad spot right now, but lets look at what the item is intended to do.

Thornmal is intended to help tanks fight vs auto attackers, primary adcs. However this problematic b/c adc are suppose to be the best class at fighting tanks. So if thormal is too good at its job it undermines a key weakness of the tank class and causes balance problems. I think it would be better to change thormail to have an active (or maybe triggered ablity) that was stronger but allowed an adc to try and wait it out and avoid the damage. It would be come more of a zoning tool and provide windows of strength / weakness. It would be useful for diving tanks b/c it would keep the adcs of there back for a little while while they murderer the back line / apply cc.

What if......

Thormail actually did evolve kinda like manamune / archangels.

So, how about you gain perma 1 armor each time you are hit (1 second cooldown or something) or when you reflect damage. At a certain point (maybe like when you reach the cap of 40 bonus armor, thornmail will evolve into something... useful. or maybe it will grant a bonus armor per X times youve been hit (no cooldown).

And we cant start with some kinda item upgraded from cloth armor that gives flat 20 armor + the stacking armor effect which will carry over to thornmail. And instead of thormail starting with 100 it can start with 65-70.

The final evolved thornmail can even have some weird active effect that increases damage returned for a short time with a 60 second cooldown. This way its still sorta balanced. ..... idk

I really like the zuanic capacitator idea but most magic damages are ranged so the active would be useless. I think if you changed it so at max stacks, the next damaging attack or ability you do will expend the stacks that would be best. I would also nerf the tank stats a bit on it though since it is also an offensive item.

there's that old school banshee's veil that floats in dominion. it's your zuanic capacitator.

but on a map no one ever plays anymore ;\

Thornmail also has this awkward hole of non-functionality by being in the game in its current state.

iluvalar1 votes

I don't think it's necessary, as I said in another post, I made the math and thornmail become quite potent as a 4rth armor. You can easily go around the combine cost at this point and before, the armor is simply not cost efficient. I don't know why you'd rush a thornmail.
