Can we have old Grievious Wounds back? healers are a pain to deal with :(

Right now we're looking at whether we should revert Grievous Wounds to its old functionality as part of the mid-season patch. Our original hope was that making healing output more consistent for extremely healing focused champions would make them easier to balance. That hasn't worked as well as desired however. As a result we're testing going back to GW affecting all healing to restore the partial safety valve that old GW gave when champs that heal others got out of line.

Hellioning18 votes

What happened to the old 'get rid of Grevious Wounds altogether' idea? It's a really binary mechanic that is completely necessary against some champs and completely useless against others.

RiotMeddler12 votes

GW as a safety valve is something we're still interested in. Generally there's something you can do to specifically improve your effectiveness when a specific enemy champion is doing really well. Against a melee auto attacker for example Frozen Heart's disproportionately valuable, Banshee's is especially strong against single CC focused champs like Blitz or Annie, Mikael's is great against Morg or Ashe etc. Grevious Wounds offers such an effect against champions whose power increases in self or ally focused ways (e.g. the unkillable Mundo or, if going back to an all healing model, the constantly topping people off Soraka).

MasterYi , You sure about that?

Also why is there no good way to shut down hyper mobile champs? Everything else in the game can be itemised against, maybe it's time to let people itemise against mobility.

EfficientDynamo3 votes

They are implementing that in Cass' new kit, which has an anti-mobility "grounded" CC. I'm sure they will consider expanding this form of CC once they get input on Cass' new kit.

LankPants5 votes

We're talking about itemisation, Cass having anti-mobility is irrelevant.

Mr Frank7 votes

if they're introducing a mechanic, that mechanic can be applied to an item

I boop things4 votes

Exactly, case in point is Zeds ult. It's a mechanic that has since been turned into item 3147.

EfficientDynamo3 votes

How is it irrelevant? You test out a mechanic on a champ and see if it is broken, and then expand it to items or other champs if it is healthy.

I've read through her plans for the Mid Year Mage update but I only simmed trhough it, couldn't find anything about her shutting down mobility though. Have I missed it, is it in there? Or did Riot announce it somewhere else?

A version of her new kit was accidentally released on the pbe. The exact details aren't super clear but we got the general gist of what was happening heres a link (click here you silly goose)

Wondering why everyone has forgotten about item 3022 .

I think he was referring to anti-mobility. Granted it does nothing against dashes, only MS

Olaf ultimate as well.

Barring them, I've been picking it up over Steraks for a while on Kindred, or if I want the extra health as an ADC after the nerf to it. Really overlooked item imo.

Carnicore4 votes

That thing is only good on Gnar. Normal melees have a hard time applying the slow, and normal ranged champions don't like spending so much gold on so little raw health (unless it has outstanding defensive utility like Maw or Sterak's) and negligible AD (again, Maw and Sterak's offer more).

I am Razgriz3 votes

Yi is a special case since he doesn't get slowed. That's why you're supposed to build Thornmail and/or Tabi. Frozen Heart works against literally everyone else. Come off it with your fucking coy shit.

Beardedheathen1 votes

Oh you mean the armor against the champion that has one of, if not the, strongest abilities to ignore armor with his true damage?

I am Razgriz2 votes

You're building Thornmail because he kills himself on you. You build tabi because of the -auto attack % on it. Lastly even though he has true damage like 80% of his damage is still physical. It's like saying to not build armor vs Vayne.

Hellioning2 votes

Yes, but there generally aren't many items you can build that straight up say 'you are now 50% more useless against me' apart from, like, your first armor or MR item. Even then, they can counterbuild your counterbuild, which causes you to buy more armor or MR, etc.

That doesn't happen with grevious wounds; a Soraka or Mundo doesn't see that someone picked up a GW item and goes 'oh, I should build AP/health so I heal for more to counteract the GW!' They were probably already gonna build the AP or health in the first place (though Soraka currently doesn't build that much AP.)

Soraka was not in the dumpster before the GW changes. She was still good, just not AS good as now.

Iohet4 votes

Yes, and you can build resists or use shields to mitigate damage. The only thing you can do to mitigate heals are do more damage or apply grievous wounds.

GW doesn't have 100% uptime. It falls off, what are you talking about?

For Morello's you have to be below 40%. Hardly anyone buys Mortal Reminder (because it sucks, even against Mundo) but the counterplay is to not get hit. Just walk away.

GW is still useful vs Swain, Vlad, Aatrox, Volibear, and Warwick. It's not something that should go away. The old GW was fine. Because Nami, Sona, Soraka, and to a different extent Janna have good sustain and need something to be curbed.

Direct item counters matter little, as plenty do that already. See: Mercurial Scimitar, Banshee's Veil, and Zhonya's.

I don't think Nami or Sona need to have their sustain curbed. And certainly not Janna.

Urza 8572 votes

Yeah I personally find that massive crits with Dominik's are plenty to drop Mundo along with anyone else with a bigger health pool than me. So the jungler, whoever built Roa, the enemy support eery hurry sight stone and locket. Mortal Reminder is just meh.

DrRyouBakura3 votes

I think a good solution would to make grievous wounds less effective for ally heals. Like the current 40% reduction for self heals and a 25% reduction from all other sources of healing. So it will still help a good deal vs the cancer banana but not shut her out completely.

CrazedPorcupine5 votes

If you do decide to go back to the old GW paradigm, does that mean you'll revert a lot of the nerfs you've handed Soraka over the past 6 months? Many of these nerfs were because her healing wasn't affected by GW. And as such, if GW goes back to it's old form, Soraka will have been thoroughly dumpstered.

Soraka will desperately need her Q sustain ramped up, her W's heal back up, and her Ult getting it's ability to remove GW back. Hell, could you just roll Soraka back to how she was in 5.20?

Cael Prime2 votes

This is exactly right. She's been nerfed so many times because they changed GW. Her mana costs are way higher now & heal does way less healing now as a result of the nerfs to deal with GW being changed. Now, before the GW change (and thus before her nerfs) she was fine. So if they revert the GW change but they don't revert the numerous nerfs she's gotten she will be completely useless and that's not acceptable either.

Canastus2 votes

This is Riot we're talking about, they never buff a champion after gutting them over a certain mechanic or item, even if those things return to a normal state. Meanwhile the affected champion remains in the dumpster. They've done this countless times already.

And then there's Vayne, who has no item counter in league, because % of Max Health as True damage on a Ranged champion means there is no off switch.

I agree, actually. Also, it would free up some space on certain items. cough item 3033 cough item 3165 *cough

Nasteh1 votes

Spoken like a Soraka main. Im onto you

Hellioning3 votes

Getting Grevious Wounds removed would probably help make Soraka actually healthy. If all of her healing was reduced by 40% when it matters the most, it'd normally have to be pretty high so it's still kinda useful, especially now that she has a health cost to it. But if GW was gone, than she'd always be at that 'kinda useful' mark without having to buy an item specifically to counter her.

Would reverting to old Grevous wounds and make Mortal Reminder have an active that applies grievous wounds to auto attacks for the next 5 seconds do the trick?. The hit target has Grievous Wounds applies for 3 seconds after being hit. Active has a 60 second Cooldown.

That will keep the item in check from making soraka and the like useless but still allow for it to be effective when it is used well.

RiotMeddler9 votes

We might need to adjust Executioner's Calling/Mortal Reminder yeah. It's possible going back to broader GW effect would require some more gating of how easily it can be applied for AD champs.

Cosnirak3 votes

Today I played Mundo top and my opponent chose Quinn and bought first item Executioner's Calling. It felt pretty effective, though it didn't let her just out right kill me or anything it certainly changed how I played. I couldn't just all in her easily, relying on my ult to win the fight, so I had to try to wear her down. But that didn't work well because she could kite me and mostly avoid cleavers by staying behind minions.

To me the item felt overall effective and worth while for her without making me feel completely useless on Mundo, especially once I got to do stuff away from her. I think a lot of the problem with the item comes from its lack of build path options, not due to it failing to do its job. I almost never buy it when I ADC in part because it only builds into one thing and I often still want the effect from Giant Slayer as well. I really wish GS + EC combined into something.

Giant Slayer + Executioner's Calling sounds broken. It would outright destroy the following and make them borderline unplayable: DrMundo Vladimir Volibear

Cosnirak3 votes

I disagree. They could build armor, for which you wouldn't have any % pen. And it doesn't just negate the entirety of their healing and hp, it just helps vs those things. Plus such an item would give you very little help in killing enemy squishies who aren't healing based.

Thryale2 votes

why not introduce a new debuff, "mortal wounds."

Leave GW as is, and add Mortal Wounds to reduce all healing. Or you could do something like this:

Greivous Wounds: reduce self healing by 40% and all other healing by 10%

Mortal Wounds: reduce self healing by X% and all other healing by Y%

Thoughts?

All I'm hearing here is "In the preseason, we made Soraka fun to play. We want her to go back to not being fun to play." I've always played healer type champs in games (e.g. holy priests in World of Warcraft). This season was the first time we had a character who was a genuine combat medic (as opposed to say Nami or Sona whose heals are mostly about lane sustain). I love looking at the stat screen after a game and seeing my healing numbers matching up well with the damage dealt to champs by other characters. That's not broken. That's a new and fun way to play the game. Meanwhile, Soraka is squishy enough, lacks hard cc (unless the E manages to proc), and has to get close enough to her targets that she can be vulnerable to assassins or other characters who want to get at her. Why reintroduce a mechanic that can completely shut her down with the purchase of one already good item? (Morellonomicon and/or Mortal Reminder). You might as well just kiss Soraka goodbye. Right now, enemies have to take a risk to try to get at Soraka using tactics. Reintroducing GW as you're suggesting means that a team just needs one AOE heavy mage with Morellonomicon and Soraka can be efffectively shut down from a safe distance with no way available for her to counter it.
