Tribunal System
I'm writing regarding the tribunal system Riot has implemented, in terms of how it could possibly be improved.
Toxic Players
Toxic players are very common in the game, and most likely they tend to blame others for the enemy's successive action, such as getting a turret, kill, etc. and not do anything productive. What I've noticed in my gaming experience with League of Legends is that these same people tend to demand others to report a certain player quite quickly, and most likely are the first to do so.
The Tribunal System counts reports and documents evidence, such as Harassment tends to document the chat log. What I wonder is how the Tribunal identifies the Harassment lines from the rest, and also if it takes reports from people who have violated the code as well. Toxic players who stand idle and buy silly items or sell everything and remain idle shouldn't really have a right to report at level 30, or people who have flamed histerically in game, or who has gone afk themselves. I find Players like these win from these situations by getting what they wanted: the "noobs" out of their way.
Warnings
The Tribunal does in fact notify when a player gets reported. But these come in the form of neglectable notifications, with no further provision of afterwards. What about, after a certain tally, the Tribunal email's a warning of a possible incoming suspension if the behavior continues? This way, the player is notified of the issues more severely and has a reminder, or perhaps a yellow warning icon on their account saying "This account is likely for suspension" until they are out of the red zone. This way the player HAS to be reminded of their behavior and forced to reflect on it.
The reason these are better than notifications is simple: Notifications are halfassed (excuse my language) for several reasons:
- The effort seems as though they want people banned/suspended rather than correcting behavior.
- They are obviously neglected. A pop up comes, of course we're gonna press OK or click away.
- It doesn't promote proper player behavior as effectively and actively as it could.
- Players don't sense the severity of their actions before getting punished as severely.
- They don't learn from their mistake. They got a report, so what. With constant reminder of an impending suspension, they are forced to make changes.
- They don't differ the more reports they receive.
Riot claims they want to promote proper player behavior, and though the system exists, it seems to just suspend. Warnings should come in tiers.
Report Validity
As I mentioned before, Toxic players often report others to remove them from the game. The validity of a report should be considered too. This system is MUCH more complex when I think about it, but otherwise a perfectly normal player with bad luck will get reported for verbal abuse so often, even when they haven't chatted anything aside from tactics in game, that the player receives a suspension, but the other guy gets a Thank You for reporting him. It seems very rude and unfair. The system needs to filter bias rather than being incredibly neutral, because reports coming in are seen as "This Player Is Doing Something Wrong" rather than what it mostly is: "You lost it for us, so screw you!". (you know I'm right about this most of the time). Reports will stack, but many reports can be contested and appealed with ease.
Rules
Sure the tribunal has a frequently asked questions page, but does it have an official page, where players can actually read the rules and conditions and then ask questions about it.
Majority Verdict
I have read about this, and I'm assuming it depends on a summoner vote, ergo multiple reports will give you the notification rather than just one. However, I'm finding it quite ambiguous in the way it's explained, especially since it's from the wikia. More information would be nice.
Again, perhaps a toxic player could be part of a premade group, and the "majority vote" is a ganging up on a player. I have experienced a game where I played Yorick top, and was flamed ever since the start of the game. I died twice, and got one assist, but have been bullied for the rest of the game, when I wasn't in a fight as I was farming as well as when I was because I had items. Regardless, I got a notification that I've been reported for verbal abuse, when all I did was justify my decision to farm, plea that i didn't feed my laner, and asking why they were bullying me. "Majority Verdict" was a gang of people trying to make me feel miserable about playing this game.
Final Notes
The experience of league of legends is highly competitive and understandably frustrating. If you're winning most often it's a great experience, but losing turns players into animals. The community is so large as well. However, people can be very rude, and muting people isn't always the solution. I have received a report from a game where I muted everyone, did well, and didn't feed my top lane, which also resulted in our team winning, but then I got bullied in the post game chat and reported for Harassment, though I left after honoring those I felt honorable.
Communication is key, but I've often said things such as "focus on farming, it'll make you stronger in the late game" to feeders which resulted in the response "** you b*tch noob". Constructive Feedback doesn't work. I gave advice, received that comment, then muted the player, and received a report after the game was over. The game is flawed in that people get angry and frustrated, and tend to blame others for their shortcomings (the most common being "0 ganks from the jungler", which is why I no longer play jungle), and reports give them an outlet. It unfortunately works both ways, but surely there has to be a better way to filter reports out?
What do you all think?
