Why is every little nerf considered a dumpstering of a champion?

An Undead brat··28 votes·2,736 views

Like seriously, people, everytime there is a nerf (unless it's someone like LeeSin who's popular pick all the time) people act like Riot destroyed the champion and send it on the other side of the pick/popularity line.

Jhin is the most recent example, they literally shortened the slow on his ultimate by 0.25 s and reduced DFT's scaling by 0.15 bonus AD and everyone's fucking losing their mind over him "being destroyed and too weak now", what the hell? I'm not a Jhin hater in the slightest and I don't even think he was too strong by any means, it's just the meta that favours him, but I still think these were practically no nerfs.

Everyone's speaking as Riot's acting as they only leave something it's spotlight time and then just shift the meta, no, they are in most cases just trying to make champions EQUAL (except their loved LC$ boys), the nerfed champions instantly stop being picked and are forgotten, people, NO, they were only BALANCED.

So please, stop that bullshit. Sincerely, Sexy Bisex Plant

[DISCLAIMER: If the majority disagrees with me, it might only be that I despise metaslaves and think that people who don't have any main they enjoy because of their lore/kit/both are just simple pussies, but I needed to speak out.]

fun fact: riot once nerfed a champion in patch notes, but forgot to actually put the nerfs in the game, causing the champion to remain the exact same (OP). What followed was an outrage on the boards that he is no longer playable and he needs to be buffed again.

So there's that, people like to voice their opinions on subjects they have no knowledge of, especially in this pathetic boards.

note: no sources for my claim, apologies, read it a couple years ago from a rioter here

I found the quote, it's by FeralPony I believe. "There was one time when I was pretty new at Rito where I submitted a Vladimir nerf (removing the bonus speed from his pool) but forgot to actually submit the files into the patch. As a result, the patch notes went out and sentiment was that we had killed the champion. Vladimir’s play rate plummeted and his win rate decreased a bit, even though the changes never actually went out.

We had a similar instance when Riven was released where she was viewed as very weak. We hotfixed in some buffs and shortly after posting it to the forums, her play rate spiked and feedback was very positive. Players happily reported how great the buffs felt, even though the hotfix hadn’t actually gone live yet."

I believe the similar situation happened to Nami very shortly after release. Riot had said they were going to buff her long the bubble to hit the ground (A.K.A shorten it's travel time) but it never went through the patch notes. A tonne of people expressed how better it was, when nothing had even changed. It was just a case of people learning how to land the ability.

It also lowered the winrate of the champ.

Reminds me of Riven where everyone said she was too weak, so they said they'd hotfix her but didn't actually put it in. Then all of a sudden "wow thanks for the buff Riot, she plays so much better now." Ridiculous.

People need broken champs to compete because they are not skillful enough to actually learn to play the champ. The damage gets toned down and those players start bitching and moaning instead of adjusting and adapting. Basically they have to learn the champ and their entitled little asses hate that. Really could care less what these people say. Truth is truth. Gamers today are not very good compared to what they used to be.

Ima call BS on that. Gamers today are the same as the old ones. Everyone still takes the cheesy wins and crap. A bug exists? It's either patched or exploited, unless it's literately impossible to exploit. You find the infinity+1 sword? You use nothing else. Be it a cheap win with Lux in URF, or 128% mblock in Final Fantasy III (US), or using Mewtwo in Pokémon R/B/Y/G, it's been done since…forever. Since the very first imbalance in a game.

I stand by what I said. I play what I want to play. Many players play what they want to play. Many players adapt and adjust to changes. Many players can't or won't. They are the ones I am talking about. Just because you may be one of them players, don't lump, "Everyone" into your BS post because you are wrong as evidenced by how I play. Thanks.

There you go. Several good answers here in this thread. People suck and most players blow. They need OP champs or perceived OP champs to feel the slightest bit competitive.

Tell that to people like me who try to learn ryze because they want to be rewarded for having skill on a champ and then after dozens of nerfs you ask yourself why you even play the champ when you can just pick orianna and murder teams with two button clicks.

Camille is actually a perfect example of this. She launched REALLY strong, and then that more recent patch that slashed her numbers across the board had people calling her the next Kalista or Azir and claiming she got gutted. She didn't, because all of her excess power was stripped and she was brought down into a sensible place. People enjoyed their freelo wins, because Camille and those other champions allowed them to steamroll games with the barest minimum of skill. Now that those champions have had their problem areas cut back, they require more skill to do well with, and don't dominate at the drop of a hat. This is why people bitch and moan, because they don't actually have the skill to master said champion, they were just piggybacking on their overpowered stats.

THANK YOU for that, let me just say I love how people stopped finally calling that elegant lady names.

I don't remember people saying Camille would be Azir'ed by her nerfs - although, I may just have not been paying attention around then. From what I recall, every time Riot nerfed Camille, most people were crying out that Riot wasn't nerfing her hard enough, or in the wrong places and that the nerfs wouldn't do anything.

Oh, when they nerfed Q, W, E, and R simultaneously, people were calling her utterly unplayable and completely gutted.

Xonra1 votes

Yeah all I remember seeing was the opposite "That's it?! She is still completely broken Riot". That's what I saw, not what you are claiming.

SSJTribe2 votes

Another good example would be Shaco. He got two or three nerfs in a row, and every time the boards were flooded that he would be unplayable. Even then he remained one of the highest win % junglers

A little nerf drops the champion below the "Broken Freelo Line", which basically dumpsters it for FOTM players.

Jhin still wins 25% of all League games

Snowman Arc2 votes

First of all, the 0.25 sec removal from the slow on his ulti is extremely important. I won't go into detail why, there are youtube clips explaining, and it's self explanatory anyway. Therefore, this "small" nerf is actually pretty impactful, because it's not a small nerf.

On top of these, the nerfed the lethality items. Removed some AD and lethality from Yoummu's, Edge of Night active is reduced and CD increased. Also, DFT was also reduced by 15% AD. Seeing how Jhin can reach 700+ AD, that could be a potential 100+ damage reduction, which is quite a lot.

Apart from these, there are other items getting buffed, like BorK, or masteries, like Fervor, meaning that other ADCs get higher up in the ladder, which means that Jhin becomes weaker in comparison.

So yeah, all these changes on their own are not enough, but putting them all together, they can make or break a champion.

Now, I don't know to what extent Jhin has been hit, I'm not even sure if he is bad, I still think he's top tier, I'm just saying what can happen under certain circumstances.

An Undead brat7 votes

The thing is Jhin's damage remained extremely high, he still has his utility and I don't think he needed the Curtain calls' slow in the first place because a good Jhin hits all the bullets even without it and it's there just to force Jhin to use the ult not only for clean-ups but also for engages. My point is he still remains a very good champion and what is more important, if he's not gutted for real like Azir or Kalista, he'll be a good champion forever for those who truly main him and don't play him only because he'd be OP but because they simply like him as a champion.

Dreadlocks10 votes

Thank god his ulti got nerfed.. if a squishy champion ran within 1/4'th the map and had vision he could 100-0 them with just his ult..

no Jhin's actually complained and actually agreed with it, go to the Jhin mains reddit or league reddit and its a different discussion to here.

An Undead brat1 votes

Whatever, this is not a discussion about Jhin being OP or not, it was just an example of someone who got a little love tap and everyone's losing their minds - but what bothers me are the pickrate drops of the most champions that get the same treatment which are absolutely unjustified...

B00B001 votes

i was just taking part in your discussion...was just an example. peace out.

GayFluffyUnicorn1 votes

That's because 90% are fotm riders and think that playing that champ gives them freelo. That short timeframe last season when irelia was considered op, everyone played her top and thought it was freelo until i trashed them with GP. Experience>fotm.

People who complain that their champion is trash after a patch are those who had no skill with that champion and was cheesing the op in the champion.

Look at riven, she was popular for a while again with lethality because of how well she does with rushing youmumus(lethality, mobility, cdr, ad). Now look at her, she's completely outscaled by things like Jayce because he can abuse the shit out of lethality while being both melee and ranged. And poppy and almost any tank can survive her damage as long as they play correctly

eLanks1 votes

Listen the new lb nerf, i play her all the time but you can be 10 kills up on laning opponent and still not do any dmg. IMO lb is ruined. Thx riot.

Xonra1 votes

Because half the time Riot either pulls out the feather and does a laughable buff/nerf or the pull out the baseball bat and go for the knees till people go "WTF?!"

You don't have to like the way people word it, but it is usually not that far off, be it initially or after 3 patches. Riot doesn't understand subtle with their balance, and just goes for "all in" with everything.

PowerOfHate 1 votes

Because riot are nerfing the parts of the champion that are easier to exploit. Like Jhin R slow pre-nerf if you hit 1 shot you will almost certainly gonna hit rest 3 , so who wants to take skill to hit this 4 shots? And now Leblanc got gutted half of the dmg of her W's and its huge nerf on paper but she still works pretty fine. They will be threads from LB mains who are complaining about it I am sure. Like i said its easy to complain about something that used to give free elo.

PiVoRx1 votes

Probably cause every little buff is also considered a un-dumpstering of a champion. MasterYi
