Thoughts about Sunfire Cape

With the changes to Randuin's Omen and the introduction of Dead Man's Plate, I'm wondering about Sunfire Cape. Do you guys build it, yes or no? Explain your reasoning if you could.

This isn't a 'Sunfire Cape is useless' thread, I'm just curious about the thoughts of other players.

I personally think Sunfire Cape still works, but it isn't just a thoughtless purchase like it might have been in the past. It's become more niche, geared towards tanks and bruisers who have no problems sticking to their opponents and who have something to work in tandem with the AoE burn, like Amumu being able to reduce the MR of targets with basic attacks via his passive Cursed Touch which empowers the burn, along with getting to and sticking to targets with his Bandage Toss, or Renekton who grows larger (thereby expanding the area of Sunfire's AoE effect) with his ultimate which already carries it's own AoE component, and can stick to targets with his Slice/Dice dash.

Wait, Renekton's ultimate increases the range of Sunfire Cape?

I never knew that; I would just get it since I would be in the middle of teamfights anyways and it worked well with the AoE damage on my ultimate.

It's a nice item on tanks for waveclear and AoE damage in fights. It can cause some issues or be overshadowed in certain situations, but it's still a pretty solid item.

Well think about it: the aoe affects an area with your character as the radial starting point. When your champion grows larger, their hitbox expands, which not only means that they can be more easily struck by skillshots, but indirectly aoe effects are expanded simply because the origin source from which they come from has become larger.

It's basic math: aoe effective range is equal to champion size plus determined innate area of effect. The aoe's range itself does not expand, the source itself grows larger, so the aoe indirectly expands.

In practice, it doesn't change much: you still have to be within 400 range of an opponent to burn them with Sunfire Cape, but now you are larger, so it is easier to burn multiple targets around yourself/your focused target, because you now cover a larger area.

I wasn't sure if Sunfire Cape occurred in a radius around the edge of a champion (which would extend the range) or the center of the champion (which wouldn't).

Never bothered looking up which it was.

I pretty much only build it if I play Shen top, or very rarely on Braum as support, if the team comps allow me to do it.

That said, I don't play every tank champion either :P

i only build it on champions that have aoe damage around them. shyvana. mundo. it works good together. enemy doens't expect to get a lot of damage. cape needs a buff.
