If this guy manages to survive the Harrowing, could we get him as our next champion?

Edit: He survived, and managed to avoid dying still after a VERY close call. As I said, he's a survivor. Vote Rafen for next champion, once Illaoi gets her spot.
LANWhale11 votesI kinda like him not being a champion. Its mostly because I get tired of seeing important figures become champions, while it totally makes sense as to why important figures become champions.
I feel like the appeal to Rafen isn't so much in his character but the fact that he is just some guy, hes not a deity, legendary warrior, monarch, he is just a regular Bilgewater man who's had his fair share of experiences.
Would I be upset to see him a champion? No, like I said his character is amazing and I would love more Bilgewater champions. But seeing him become a champion would kinda lose the appeal that this guy isn't a badass but rather a normal person with wants and needs.

I would enjoy Rafen because he isn't some hulking beast or magical superbeing, he's just someone who has managed to avoid dying thus far between his own skill and a good amount of luck.
He is human, in a way that a good few of our human champions are. Miss Fortune and Gangplank are perfect examples: they're human and are limited as humans but stand out. Gangplank? He's human, but he is the most badass pirate you could imagine complete with ship to fire on your ass from afar. Miss Fortune? She is simply human as well, but she hunts pirates and is very good at the draw.
Rafen has survived thus far, between "multiple Harrowings" and the whole conflict between Gangplank and Miss Fortune, and that is the thing: he's a survivor, he's distinguished himself for having stayed alive thus far.
Granted, it's very likely they will go the cliche route and have him die in the end, but if he doesn't, I think we could have a theme for another champion, maybe one that can survive dangerous situations with other champions and come out alive.

Being able to stand among giants is sorta a thing in and of itself.
Is he going to be the guy who saves us all? Probably not.
But he will be with us on our journey as we go along towards damnation.
I would never say no to his aide in a time of desperation.

I don't know for you but for me i feel a stronger connection with Rafen, and actually care for what happens to him, than almost all the other champions simply do to the fact that he is not a champion. Him not being a champion always us to have a stronger connection because his destiny is unknown, for all we know he could die at the end of the Harrowing or not. Making him a champion is basically saying he wont die which ruins his big appeal.
Don't you feel more attached to him due to the fact that he may die at the end of it? That his future is not known and we have to just watch him makes his own decisions?
By making him become a champion you basically remove the biggest thing of Rafen that every one has attached to, his ordinariness. He doesn't carry a giant weapon, hes not made of magic, he doesn't come form a long history of priest. Hes just an average guy trying to live in a world he calls home.
Lord Boltrix1 votesYou're right, of course, which is why I think about how this might turn out into him dying or ascending into champion status. After all, in the world of Runeterra, you usually end up either becoming fish, or fisherman, the League of Legends are those who have become the fisherman. I DO enjoy him being this average joe guy who just happens to survive, but in the face of not one, but multiple Harrowings... you either need to be extremely lucky, or you have something special about you.
He may just be an average guy, but staying average and living in the world of Runeterra, where void-creatures roam, there is constant war and strife (and the League no longer exists to maintain stability), and the undead come to say hello every now and then, are rather mutually exclusive.
If he dies, well sadly it proves the point that he was average in the end, and eventually things catch up when that which is exotic seeks you out, but if he doesn't die and survives, well, maybe there is something more to him.
Or maybe he is just an extra who survives simply because the plot never caught up to his death.

I wouldn't mind some in game references for him. He doesn't scream, "Champion." but he screams, "Needs to be in league."
Lord Boltrix2 votesHm, I think it will go this way: if he dies, then he will likely become a reference that MF will make against Shadow Isles champions, but if he survives, he might prove himself League material. I mean, Illaoi sounds cool and all, but I've already grown attached to Rafen as a character, and I think we need more Bilgewater champions overalll. I'd buy him on first release to be honest, no matter what he does, and hell: it would be like the old journal of justice where reading about this kind of stuff might hint at to what individuals might become League champions.

Gentleman Gaston2 votesHe kinda fills the same role as Mr. Gibbs from the Pirates of the Caribbean films, to me at least. Just some salty cutthroat sailor who's MF's right hand and friend. He's a cool character to have and I hope he sticks around for a good while longer (even though he's got "fan-favorite emotional death" written all over him). I'm fine with him not being a champion, as I think his role as a average side-kick to MF works well for the character, but I also wouldn't be opposed if he was released as a champion.

He knows when enough is enough. I can see a surprise death where something unexpected comes crashing through and kills him. But I wouldn't expect him to willingly go up against the black mist and survive. Olaf on the other hand....

I like the sound of it, considering that some ADC's without mobility lack a reliable means of disengaging, and there aren't a lot of champions who can help disengage who aren't just able to engage for the sake of peeling for safety.
