i go on to spectate, i see a zed, against an urgot, the urgot has flash and cleanse and he proceeds to beat the ever living shit out of zed

meanwhile, Dark horses, urgot top.

Basically, Urgot is a counter to Zed because:

his passive negates Zed's burst (and last hitting power even)
he is an anti melee lane bully
he is AD (if zed wants a defensive item, he can't just buy a mercurial scimitar and do damage anyway)
his ult counters Zed's
his build path inherently counters AD champions
he becomes a powerful team fighter with underrated 1v1 ability

Yeah, and that probably isn't all of what makes him good vs Zed, just what I can think off the top of my head.

doesn't Urgot have a lock-in with his Q if he lands his E, neutralizing Zed's mobility factor?

that's part of what makes him good against melees, but yes, that could be a point on its own.

I think the main thing to do is ult before Zed ults, and when Zed uses his shadow aim his E where Zed is going to juke (he should be taking minion aggro, I believe).

6 is a crock of shit except for the last half of it. Sorry, but bottom-of-the-barrel attack range + E reliant Q + a suicidal ultimate does not a strong teamfighter make.

He doesn't need to auto lock Q when he is up in the enemy team's face, which he can do quite easily because even in a damage build he is extremely tanky. I think you're thinking of ADC Urgot, which is crap, but top or mid lane Urgot are very durable (especially since the new mana scaling on W gives about 140+ extra net shield strength with only item 3110 and item 3042 ) That and his passive can make him deceptively hard to kill if he tags the enemy carry/assassin with it

For many moons people have been describing Urgot has an anti-carry. I'm glad you finally realized what that meant. I would recommend Ghost over Cleanse.

I think the point is more that Urgot didn't have exhaust or ignite.

Also, Urgot likes cleanse. He's got plenty or range, power, and damage mitigation. But lacks mobility and all his strengths are tied to his abilities.

the buff to his shield helps a lot, and he can ult Zed's ult to negate a lot of the potential damage. i dont think he's necessarily a counterpick like malzahar or lissandra tho...

He did not. He just failed miserably and spammed R to pretend nothing happened. Then Urgot screwed up and died, but that was a bronze-like mistake from Urgot rather than Zed doing something.

Zed likes to duel Malzahars 1v1 and still lose (because that ult ain't doing shit while you're getting puke on your face and if Zed is ulting it means I know where he's going to land for muh skillshots)
