What to start with when you are new to ranked?
I have a friend who wants to know what would be the best role to play as a new player in ranked?

Role wise pick whatever you are best at and most comfortable playing and winning with in normals. The game isn't any different in ranked than it is in normals.
Tell "your friend" to play whatever his best champion is. Best champion > meta 100% of the time.
