How the 1/3's rule in riot's ranked algorithms may be affecting YOU!
I will be discussing trends I see as someone with multiple accounts that are ranked, personally I believe that the algorithm riot has put in place for accounts and how if you are going to possibly be able to get gold+ ever. This is after 3 seasons of ranked observation I've finally come to a conclusion
Today, I played a few ranked games only to lose LITERALLY all of them, I thought this odd because i believe in the you carry 1/3 of the games you play lose 1/3 and are carried 1/3. 5 games after today I found that i was always facing groups of people who were higher rank than me, but my teams were either the same rank on the decline or lower. Personally I think that (I know this is a whiney allocation) I have an account that riot has deemed unclimbable because every time I play on my other accounts in ranked the rule of 1/3's applies even to me so on the other accounts I own I'm losing SLIGHTLY less than I win. Now IDK if this will be permanent but, this has been a really bad issue in the last 5 patches as of 6.11.
'loss/lose' accounts
A 'loss' account is an account that riot uses to create the rule of 1/3's environment by having a group of accounts that will lose WAY more than they will win and wherever they get placed is likely where they'll stay because they get the learning from losses but, they feel either too ganged up on in terms of ranked that they play normals mostly and end up avoiding the algorithm sub-coniously or they play ranked but, barely advance anywhere. It's possible to advance these accounts but, expect to feel like fighting a completely uphill battle fought with 1 wrong step and you plummet to the bottom. These accounts will also be kept in one bracket until another more suited account is found to replace it so you will likely fall to single digits a lot then get to mid 70's then go on a loss streak back to single digits if you play ranked on these accounts. Because if the system can keep loss in a certain place they can control how quickly advancement happens to keep this 1/3's rule in place. These accounts are unintentionally meant to balance the amount of winning a person can do by creating an environment for the normal accounts. Sorry player you're another casualty so the majority can enjoy themselves.
'win' accounts
On the flip side of this there are accounts out there that I have witnesses go 30/0 in ranked lose 1 then go like 10-30 more games without a loss, this could be a variety of things but like I said this is something I've experienced with a buddy of mine who has asked me many times why I'm not higher rank than him because I'm better all around and every time he asks I end up telling him that it's because my account was deemed a 'loss' account where his was deemed a 'win' account.
Now I believe that these 'win' and 'lose' accounts are created by the algorithm that I believe is in place with the 1/3's rule and riot's algorithm is set up to allow this to happen but, there are accounts that they would need to rely on to provide those opportunities to for the 1/3's rule to apply so they have these 'win and lose' accounts in place so games are pretty well predetermined but, can be won or lost by the players it's just who the players are that makes these games so lopsided. This is also why one sees ranked games as SO lopsided. Also, I do have a win account as well and I barely have to try to do well on it because the people who play on it just carry me even if I end up losing really hard. That's not to say these accounts can't lose it's just easier for them to win. These accounts are usually the middle or lowest rank in games and because of that they aren't relied on to carry games BUT, they can lose. These accounts, similar to 'loss' accounts are able to be stuck because these are meant to populate upper ranks like gold+ and are left in place where they will always make it to promos but lose them. If you are in this you're luck yet unlucky! another casualty of the system in place.
'normal' accounts
Normal accounts are what I would say about 66.66%+ of players and having a normal account. This is where the wins and losses are determined by you because you are placed at keystone positions for the games sort of regardless of where you are, you end up as the/one of the defining role(s)/carry(s) of the game. I also own an account like this and find it to be literally the best, you learn a lot because when you do lose it is on you, you feel like you can advance with challenge but, not impossibility and they are where improvement almost is always happening because for the most part you are matched with people just slightly higher rank than you and you tend to be the lowest rank in the game you're in. Personally without this account, I would likely still be in low bronze because of this account being a heavy 'loss' account. These are the accounts what league is optimized for and are the best overall experience. If you notice your account is like this, welcome to the "ideal" group
Closing
Fear not if you have a win or lose account because its possible you may become a normal account between seasons due to the mmr reset! so just gut out what you can! But, this knowledge isn't something you should rest on instead of improving! You WILL CLIMB if you are better than where you are but with win/lose accounts you have to be more skillful that normals BUT YOU CAN STILL CLIMB, it's just harder!
