It's not like it's more difficult to get level 6 and 7, why does it cost 4.5x as much blue essence? It just takes so much time to change red from purple or blue. It doesn't even feel worth it to prove my mastery on champs by getting m6 or 7 since it costs so much blue essence.

Because it is a direct conversion of what Blue Essence was valued at before. It's at that price because Mastery Level 6 and 7 were created to be a Blue Essence dump for players who complained for it. "Mastery" is more a theme than a description. It was created to be an activity to do in the game, another thing to grind for because that's what people wanted. Now with the combined systems, it's an IP dump.

OilegibtKoile2 votesMy point is that people get mad for a little cosmetic costing "tons", thus slowing down their grind for all champions. They just don't get that it is not mandatory to have any champions at mastery 7 and yet they cry for no reason.
ChuShoe6 votesBut grinding for the mastery tokens is hard enough in the first place, why make them cost up to a little less than 4000 BE with little-no compensation for how hard it is to get it in the first place. It's like making adding scoops of ice cream onto your cookie-skillet cost $1.00 extra per-scoop. I'm already paying more than enough for this cookie and for it to have 2 scoops of vanilla ice-cream on top of it and for you to make a $10 profit, why on earth are you making me pay for the ice cream to be on it in the first place.
In this case, the grinding for tokens is the base cost of the cookie skillet, and the be mastery costs are the extra scoops of ice-cream Sure, they're not mandatory, but why wouldn't I want them and still be able to have enough money for chicken tendies (the rest of the champions in league of legends) as my main meal?
