Reworked Galio is Not Going to be Hugely Similar to Shen

Over the past few weeks, with Galio's rework settling into the PBE, one thing I see relatively often is people comparing Galio to Shen - sometimes saying that Galio will be as useless as Shen, and others saying that Galio will "just turn out to be a better Shen" - and I really, really genuinely hate that everybody saying this just seems to glance over the kit, see "dash, check, taunt, check, ult only usable on allies, check", etc. and pass Galio off as a Shen clone.

Like, look at their kits, /seriously/ look at them, and tell me that Galio's just a copy/paste of Shen:

Galio, the Colossus:

  • Passive: Colossal Smash: Every 8 Seconds, Galio's next Basic Attack will deal AoE Magic Damage. The cooldown can be shortened once by 4 Seconds whenever one of Galio's Basic Abilities hits an enemy Champion.
  • Q: Winds of War: Galio beats his wings, sending two bolts of wind in narrow arcs ahead of him, converging to create a tornado that deals %Health Damage while it persists. Both the Bolts of Wind and the Tornado deal magic damage.
  • W: Shield of Durand: Passively, Galio generates a Magic Damage shield while out of combat. Actively, Galio can activate the ability and hold W down to enter a defensive stance, taking reduced damage for the duration. When released, Galio will taunt all nearby enemies in an area dependent on how long the defensive stance was held down.
  • E: Justice Punch: Galio steps back, and throws himself in a target direction, stopping on terrain, at the end of the travel path, or when he collides with an enemy Champion. If he hits an enemy Champion, he deals magic damage and knocks the target up.
  • R: Hero's Entrance: Galio targets an allied Champion, giving them the damage resistance from Shield of Durand before leaping high into the air, and hurdling down at the location the allied Champion was when Galio cast the ability. When he lands, he deals large AoE Magic Damage and knocks up any enemy hit.

Shen, the Eye of Twilight:

  • Passive 1: Ki Blade: Shen has a blade in the spirit world that can be interacted with through his abilities, Twilight Assault, Spirit's Refuge, and Stand United. The Ki Blade also has a leash range, at which point it will teleport itself forward to be within the leash range if Shen moves too far away.
  • Passive 2: Ki Barrier: After casting a spell, Shen gains a Physical Damage shield. Affecting other Champions with his ability reduces the cooldown.
  • Q: Twilight Assault: Shen pulls his Ki Blade to his position, granting %Health Damage to his next three Basic Attacks. If Shen manages to pull his Ki Blade through an enemy Champion, he gains increased attack speed and the Champions his Ki Blade traveled through are slowed when moving away from Shen.
  • W: Spirit's Refuge: Shen's Ki Blade creates a zone where all Basic Attacks performed on allies within the zone will miss. The zone will appear after a delay if there are no allied Champions near enough to be protected by the zone.
  • E: Shadow Dash: Passively, Shen regains Energy whenever he damages an enemy with his Twilight Assault or Shadow Dash. Actively, Shen dashes in a target direction, dealing Physical Damage to any enemy Champion or Neutral Monster hit, and taunting them for 1.5 Seconds.
  • R: Stand United: Shen targets an allied Champion anywhere on the map, granting them a large Physical Damage shield and channeling to teleport to them. On completion, Shen and his Ki Blade are both teleported on top of the allied Champion.

And, of course, likelihood is that just looking over this, they still look fairly similar, but here's the list of similarities:

Passive: Cooldown is reduced by affecting Champions. Q: None. W: It's an AoE ability, but elsewise, none. E: It's a Dash ability that deals damage and Crowd-Controls enemies. R: Usable only on allied Champions, is interruptable, gives targets defenses, and takes you to their location (roughly, in Galio's case).

And the differences:

Passive: Galio's is an Auto-Attack Empowerment which deals damage, Shen's is an Entity he can Interact with and a Shield he generates for casting abilities. Q: Galio's is a Ranged Skillshot with an AoE DoT, Shen's is an Auto-Attack Empowerment with a conditional AS steroid and Slow. W: Galio's is a Damage Resistance that has to be held, and an AoE Taunt, Shen's is a zone that causes Basic Attacks to Miss. E: Galio's has a brief wind-up and knocks the target up, Shen's has no wind-up and taunts targets hit. R: Galio's has a maximum range, and lands you at the location the ally was at the beginning of the cast, Shen's has unlimited range, and lands you at the location your ally was at the end of the channel.

Does this mean that Galio and Shen have somewhat similar kits? Yes, in some respects. Does this mean that Galio and Shen have a specific role they can fill in a team? Yes. Does this mean that the Galio Rework is just a clone of Shen? No. Not at all. Galio simply has some similar functions to Shen, but his kit is visibly different. Please keep this in mind when talking about Galio in relation to Shen.

galio can not deal damage in lane, therefore he is worthless in soloq.

i wont argue against a tanky or even a brawler type galio. but his kit right now is just dumb.

riot had to get rid of flash R galio, and for sure, now its gone. unfortunately they forget to make a workable champion, they even said "we didn't want E + W to be a thing, thats alistar and malphites thing" his kit has no synergy with itself. its 4 different overtuned abilities slapped onto galio for the sake of changing him up, which will get nerfed when everyone realizes that no1 has a rank 1 ability that brings over 100 damage.

galios going to be hyped up OP on release, then a month later dumpsterd to shen level.

do you know why? because hes team reliant (look at the ult, and a non damage W, 2 damage abilities, try to carry your team with just 2 damaging abilities, you cant do it)

new galio is a pog champion, nothing more nothing less, just different from old galio.

but whats worse is that new galio is even more gimped by his cast times and channels than old galio ever was
