You Can Defend Yourself Without Retaliating.

Since, unfortunately, the issue of "defending yourself" being confused with retaliation and counterflame is still something of a pertinent issue, I feel that this is fair enough timing to bring up some experiences of my own that prove that you don't have to counterflame to be "defending yourself", and that you don't have to rise to every single slight against you.

And, while it obviously needn't be said, I will preface that this won't be the usual fare of reminding people to Mute, Report, & Move on as is the PB motto. Instead, I'm going to share a recent anecdote so that people can see the way that I, as a player, respond to flame and similar such stressors in a match, and hopefully consider a more tactful approach to future altercations in League.

And, of course, the last bit of preface is that, for the sake of individual player privacy and compliance with the rules, the only Champion I'll give is the one I played for the match; the flamer(s) will be generalized and characterized by their faults, not any identifying information - whether that be screenname, champion, or whatever else.

So, with all that out of the way, let's set the stage;

The other day, I had played a string of ARAM games for the sake of earning an easy Hextech Chest. In one of the matches, I got Karthus as my Champion, and while our team was largely AP, I was confident to play Karthus regardless. The whole of Champion Select goes by without anything noteworthy, and the match begins.

Some ways into the match, someone (To be referred to as "Build Dictator", for this anecdote) starts badgering me about how I'm playing Karthus, telling me that I need to "go in".

I promptly ignore him, and continue playing Karthus as I would. That is to say; staying roughly in the middle-ground and harassing enemy Champions with Wall of Pain and peppering them with Lay Wastes, with Defile being used if/when enemies dove near/on me, and of course, Requiem being used post-mortem or whenever I was safe and saw someone at critically low health.

(Sidenote, there was a genuine moment of banter between me and an enemy with one of my Requiem casts, which I'll probably bring up as a bonus later.)

The match continues, and the only other irritation comes from a second player pinging my items without comment (As you can guess, they'll be referred to as "Item Pinger".), until later in the game, Build Dictator starts bothering me again, saying something along the lines of;

Build Dictator: goooo iiiin Build Dictator: karthus is so easy, just max e, dive in, and do massive aoe damage Umbral Regent: It's a little late for that, considering I've already maxed Q and W by now. Build Dictator: lmao what Build Dictator: who tf goes q and w in arams

I believe that Item Pinger said something too around this point, but it was too small and petty to really remember. The Build Dictator continued to flame me, blaming me for the loss (as one does when someone doesn't build precisely to your specifications, right?), but I didn't say anything to them before or after my comment about their timing on telling me to max Defile.

I didn't need to defend my playstyle; I don't play Divebomb Karthus, I play regular Karthus. I don't need to tell someone off when they insist I play something I don't intend to play - I just ignore them. If they want to play Divebomb Karthus, they can do so if/when they roll Karthus, but I am not them, and I have my own playstyle.

And I didn't need to respond to all of their jabs and insults; when he asks "who goes q and w in arams", he already had his answer. I do. There's no point in answering a question he already knows the answer to.

And I don't need to respond to him pinning the blame on me for not playing how he wanted me to play. I know I didn't cost us the game (the enemy team had three tanks and we didn't have any AD - generally speaking, we were pretty much doomed from the start, to no fault of our own. Just bad luck.), and his insistence to that idea was pretty much just a childish temper tantrum. So I let him throw his fit and sulk and blame me - he's just going to forget the match anyhow, so there's no point in trying to agitate him further.

I defended myself tactfully; I merely pointed out that, at level 16, telling me to max any specific ability is a day late and a dollar short, since at that level, I'd already maxed three abilities - two Basic Abilities and my Ultimate. A simple reminder of that fact and the assertion that I've already decided my playstyle was enough.

Naturally, I reported him for his flaming (as well as the Item Pinger for their negativity, although I probably should've added a comment to that. Oh well.), and continued about my ARAM spree. I didn't rise to every slight, I didn't answer every question or prodding, I simply made a tactful assertion and was done with it; nothing more needed to be said. Defense successful.

And, for bonus points, the banter anecdote; somewhere early on in the game, I had used my second Requiem to try and finish off the enemy Leona, and failed. The exchange went as follows;

Umbral Regent: Leo, did your W give you enough MR to survive my Requiem? Leona: yup Umbral Regent: Frig. Leona: ^^^ Umbral Regent: That's tilting. Leona: you'll get me next req

This is banter. It's light-hearted, well-meaning, and it's playfully competitive. It's not littered with insults or hate speech, it's just two players having some good fun - even as enemies - in the game.

So, there you have it; an example of what I mean whenever I tell people that you can defend yourself in chat without retaliating, or that defending yourself requires tact. I don't expect it to work for everyone, and I certainly don't expect people to readily follow my example; there are certainly a great many ways to respond to someone while being perfectly tactful, and this is only one example.

Consider this, then, as an invitation to discuss my example (Do you think it suffices as defending myself? Do you think that I misstepped/misspoke? Do you think I could've/you would've gone further, or would you have said anything at all, were you in my shoes?), as well as an invitation for others to share examples of their defending themselves without retaliating.

(And, of course, while Mute, Report, & Move on is ubiquitous for these scenarios, I'm encouraging more discussion around actually defending oneself in chat.)

Hopefully, though, this example offers something to think about if nothing else.

Weird. When ever I play karthus, I Max q first.

That thing does a lot of dmg and it's spammable lol.

I don't like suicidal karthus either. It rarely serves a purpose lol.

I was playing on my smurf and someone started telling me how to build. I simply state that i know how to build and moved on.

Ive also had an ADC who got angry with the jungler for "never ganking" (the jungler ganked early and the ADC got a kill out of it)... then started following the jungler around a bit and was trying to fight the the jungler for his camps he was taking. The ADC finally went back bott after like 4-6 camps and had made another whine comment about no ganks. I roamed mid since we were at second tower anyways and took a little time to get back to lane ill admit... but I knew me getting to lane wasnt going to change anything either way, they were not taking the tower and the ADC got some solo exp. The ADC starts on me and says "you are the SUPPORT you are supposed to be in BOT LANE" to which i replied "and you are the ADC. You do not belong in the jungle trying to take camps from the jungler." To which..... i heard 0 more comments the entire game from them.

I like you. Good on you and thank you for doing this.

As a jungle main it sucks playing with flaming teammates since it's always me. I ignore but damn it does it always feel tempting to just GO OFF on them for going 0-6.

In regard to the post itself... I think this is an explanation, which is a form of self-defense. I do not advocate that this is the only acceptable form of self-defense, but yes, you are correct. That was a fine version of self-defense.

This persons idea of how to play Karthus is quite skewed and is wrong. There are many ways of playing a champion properly and successfully. I find this to be one of the weakest ways of playing Karthus. The method you were using was completely valid.

Playing for an S is questionable. Without complete context, I cannot say about this. But basically, if you are playing to win and not screw over your teammates to get an S, then you are not in violation of the TOS and thus you are doing nothing wrong. Also, generally speaking, if you are playing to win, it will help you get an S. The only time this is a problem is when you focus on KDA or personal stats over a victory. This is a problem as the point of the game is to destroy the Nexus. I bring this up because I am genuinely confused as to the complaints about you doing this? In fact, I thought you only mentioned that it was easier to get an S in ARAM, thus you played ARAM. Not that you intended to throw the game out the window specifically to get an S? And based on your stats in the game, this was not the case so... I dunno why the complaints?

Items though... Those are actually incorrect. :D Items can be incorrect. Eternity does not stack with itself, making it less efficient than say... Banshee's Veil or Zhonya's as a purchase for Abyssal Mask. Alternatively, if you wanted Abyssal Mask, you could have thrown out Rod of Ages for something else. But, it is accurate that buying items that do not function together are "wrong." Many times this does actually hurt the game on a whole because you are made weaker with the purchase than you would have otherwise been with equal amounts of gold. And yes, it is kind of arguable that you have Abyssal Mask because of five AP champions, but giving up Rod of Ages for Void Staff would have helped a lot more.

Funny thing.. Not a single person on your team bought optimal items so they really should not be calling you out for something that is sub-optimal (but not outright trolling). Soraka bought Ardent with no ADC. Soraka could have went AD and this would have worked well for your team. Naut could have went tank, Shyvanna could have went Hybrid. Your team would have been better off. Even Nidalee should have went Luden's over Archangel's staff. So no matter who the two were, they all made sub-par itemization choices and should have looked at their own screen rather than complained to you.

Long-winded, but as honest as possible.

You shouldn't sit back and try to KS with ultimate though. If you don't want to be a dive bomber that is fine, but nobody said you have to troll your team not helping them out where they need it. Your E is your slow. Your allies wanted you to play for the team, not for yourself just to try to maximize your chance of getting S, getting better KDA than anyone else. You shouldn't be playing ARAM for the sake of getting the S grade. If you're really desperate for one, go play Twisted Treeline, there are lots of bots and you can luck into 2-3 of them on enemy team and get S easily that way.

Karthus can't do much if jumped on by a single enemy and dying...the assassin protected his team by taking out a Karthus that isn't on the front line. You never make yourself a threat to the enemy by not joining your comrades on the front line. Trying to stay protected isn't actually how you carry on ARAM. You have to push forward and create space, live or die...you need to deal damage, crowd control, and provide raw HP for the push. Killing streaks just get in the way of being able to buy things. Getting upset because people are annoyed at you trying to get S grade just goes to show you care more about getting your precious chest than winning. And I don't think Build Dictator was even being what you called him. He was simply trying to help you to do better in your next game as Karthus. Did it not occur to you that maybe instead of dictating to others how to play he was too focused on doing his own job to be able to make sure you were doing yours? Maybe he's frustrated at himself for not helping you sooner, and taking it out on you?

Try to show some understanding. Some people have been playing this game longer than you have and just take for granted that some of the players in ARAM are using ARAM-only accounts and make it part of their plan of having fun to know how to play the meta champions and they're used to play with such players using those meta strategies. I personally dislike it when people become a stickler for following the meta, but I don't think 'Build Dictator' was being such, at least not in this game, was just frustrated that you weren't really trying to win if I understand your intention behind playing ARAM in the first place correctly.
