Item Thoughts - Hydra and Brutalizer

So, I was thinking about Ravenous Hydra and how it's a pretty gimmicky item. The only champions I can think of who builds it without using a gimmick are Fiora and Talon. Renekton uses it to cancel his W and both Rengar and Khazix use it because they can use it's active mid leap and the damage applies at the landing point. I see a few isolated Tryndameres and Shacos build it too, but not often. So, I thought of some changes.

This is gonna be a long post, so be warned.

----- **Changes to Tiamat **-----

  • Now builds out of Vampiric Scepter (800g) and Rejuvenation Bead (180g). Combine cost is 220g, for a 1200g price.
  • Has 20 Attack Damage, down from 40.
  • Unique Passive renamed: HUNGER - Basic attacks deal 20% to 60% of total Attack Damage to enemies near the target on hit (Enemies closest to the target take the most damage).
  • Now has 10% Life Steal.
  • Health Regen down to 50% from 100%.
  • Unique Active - CRESCENT, removed.

----- Changes to Ravenous Hydra -----

  • Now builds out of Tiamat (1200g) and Bilgewater Cutlass (1400g). Combine cost is 700g. Total cost unchanged (3300g).
  • Has 50 Attack Damage, down from 75.
  • Has 100% bonus health regen.
  • Has Unique Passive - HUNGER - +25% Life Steal. Basic attacks deal 20% to 60% of total Attack Damage as physical damage to enemies near the target on hit (Enemies closest to the target take the most damage). Life Steal applies to damage dealt by this passive.
  • Unique Active - FEED - Deals 10% of the target’s maximum health as physical damage, and heals the caster for twice the amount. Target is also slowed by 25% for 2 seconds.

The idea is super sustain, and is optimally built by bruisers and tanks, like Sion , Tryndamere , and Olaf , who have a lot of chances to use it for the Life Steal and Health Regen. Pair this with Spirit Visage, and you've got your super sustain. The AD goes down so it doesn't hit too hard, and the new active, while mainly for the self heal, will also provide sticking power for bruisers who are easily kited.

The Life Steal on Hydra is unique, and won't stack with Bloodthirster for absurd amounts of Life Steal. Likewise, the active cannot be used with Blade of the Ruined King's. It's a tradeoff for some champions - Do you go with BortK's tank busting power and high dps, or Hydra's super sustain?

The active could also have a cool, unique animation of the champion throwing the axe at the target. Kinda like how Hextech Gunblade shoots a bullet.

Then, to replace Hydra's old niche, I thought of:

----- New Item: Kumungu Tomahawk -----

  • Builds out of Tiamat (1200g) and Brutalizer (1337g). Combine cost is 1063g, for a total cost of 3600g.
  • 60 Attack Damage
  • 50% Bonus Health Regen.
  • 10% Life Steal
  • 10% Cooldown Reduction
  • 10 Armor Penetration
  • Unique Passive - HUNGER - Basic attacks deal 20% to 60% of total Attack Damage as physical damage to enemies near the target on hit (Enemies closest to the target take the most damage).
  • Unique Passive - CRESCENT - Deals 60% to 100% of total Attack Damage as physical damage to nearby enemy units (closest enemies take the most damage) (10 second cooldown).

This item fits Hydra's current gimmicks, so champions like Renekton and Rengar who rely on it don't have to give it up. It's favorably built on assassins who use the active combined with the Armor Penetration and Cooldown Reduction to burst down squishies. Life Steal notably does NOT apply to damage dealt by this item. Instead, it's offered bonus utility in better waveclear and jungle clear. And there is still Life Steal and Health Regen, albeit not as much as Hydra, to still provide some sustain in lane and in the jungle. Also, the animations for this item would be white and green, as opposed to Hydra's white and orange, so enemies can tell the difference (Clarity!). Lastly, it gives Brutalizer a much needed option to build into.

Any thoughts?

Doesn't pretty much all the AD melee champions already build this item because of high AD, lifesteal, and waveclear?

If they do, they shouldn't. Not most of them anyway. A few, like Fiora and Tryndamere, do. But not many. Most people opt for either BortK since it's buffs, or Bloodthirster for the shield. Lee Sin gets it if he's building assassin, I guess.

I originally thought about it because Riot recommended Hydra on both Sion and Rek'Sai, but it's never built anymore by either because it isn't effective on them.

I have seen a lot of Darius using it.

Except Hydra is good because it provides decent AD. I see lots of people buying hydra as the only AD item on Renekton. Also Talon, he builds lots of armor pen as it is, and he's main job is to kill squishy champs, so the more pen he has, the more useless it becomes against them. And the less AD he has, the less bonus AD he gets. Nerfing hydra's AD would screw champions, more than help them. Also Tryndamere wouldn't use new hydra, as he builds it for waveclear in exchange for bloodthirster. Tryndamere builds BOTRK and Hydra/BT, and he is not a bruiser. He's an ADC. He needs to build pure AD to be effective.

The only flat Armor Pen item Talon can currently build is Ghostblade. The only other one in existence is Warrior, and Talon doesn't often jungle.

I always saw Trynd as a bruiser. People build Hydra on Renekton for the W animation cancel, not for the AD. If they wanted more damage, both Cleaver and Ghostblade can provide more, I would think.

And Last Whisper, and Black Cleaver, oh, and don't forget armor pen. runes and mastery. Well Trynda is not a bruiser. Aatrox is, and he builds it for wave clear, AD and VR.
