Who half assed Sona's rework?

Isn't she supposed to be a support meant to provide meaningful buffs to the team. Requiring good decision as to what to use at certain times? Her kit is a piece of shit that's only good for Q. Also being cancer to lane against because of said Q. [zombie-brand-facepalm]

I think you're underestimating the other parts of her kit. Just because the optimal strategy in the EARLY game is to focus on using Q, doesn't necessarily mean the other parts don't become insanely useful in the mid game. And I've seen well placed Sona W power chords changing the flow of bot lane skirmishes (e.g. both mid lanes roam down).

Her W gives you and your ally half a Janna shield each AND heals you both for half a Soraka heal.

When used at the right time, her W power chord can make a huge difference in a fight. For example, if a Zed or Fizz jumps in, you can W power chord for a mini-exhaust damage reduction.

Similarly, her E is not to be underestimated for chasing or kiting. It's really hard to escape from a Sona, especially if she E power chords you. It's excellent for disengage too if you're caught in a less than favourable fight (ult plus E to help team escape).

Finally, her ult - AOE burst stun. What more is there to say?

Yes, in the early game Q is prioritised for that sick harass. But in the mid-late game her entire kit is useful if used correctly.

I think you're underestimating the other parts of her kit.

I agree with everything you said. Using her passive for more than just Q procs makes her really strong. The only negative thing about Sona is how absolutely squishy she is, but I guess that's a fair trade for how much damage she can do it you build her right.

As for...

I say it's tied for the lowest base damage on a spell amongst the entire support class.

Why does she have to do damage though? Why does every support have to be able to deal damage for people to consider them rewarding?

MrwiOzV6pB1 votes

I'm a support main and I'll tell you that's where she lacks. Sona does broken damage right now. A good Sona can easily out damage her adc up to mid game and possibly even late game. The problem with her kit is that she doesn't have any cc except her Ult. The main purpose of playing support is to have CC over pure damage. If you want to do that much damage you might as well play Lux support because you'll get a ton of damage and have 2 amazing CC skills to use all the time. Sona's movement boost is pretty much useless other than her power chord with it and Sona's heal is very sub par for lacking so much altogether in her kit. Her ultimate is pretty damn good, but it's not worth playing her purely for a good ultimate since it doesn't even have a low cd.

Krigjer1 votes

The problem with her kit is that she doesn't have any cc except her Ult.

I mean, her E passive proc can be a form of soft-cc in itself but as I said, no one seems to ever use anything but her Q proc.

I will agree that Sona's heal is very subpar, but it's also an AOE heal and shield that scales off how many people you hit with it.

MrwiOzV6pB1 votes

Yeah. Her E proc can be considered a soft-cc, but most Sona's tend to go for the Q proc.

The heal can be pretty good in teamfights when you get a lot of people together. Supports generally want to have game changing abilities though and Sona really lacks in that. Her ultimate is good, but not good enough to make up for the rest of her kit imo even though she's a good early game bully. Morgana, Janna, Alistar, Thresh. etc. They're all great supports because their ultimates can easily change a game in their favor and their regular skills have so much CC and potential to turn games. While Sona really just puts all her eggs in one basket for the perfect ultimate play.

Krigjer2 votes

Yeah. Her E proc can be considered a soft-cc, but most Sona's tend to go for the Q proc.

Then they're bad Sonas for not using her kit to its full potential. That's not the champion design fault.

MrwiOzV6pB1 votes

Well it's just a thing I see a lot for Sona's going to pure damage. The thunderlord's + Q and Q proc does ridiculous damage. It can be really annoying. A lot of Sona's just end up KSing most of the time though since they do so much damage and since they lack the ability to slow/stun a target when they want to for their ADC. The ultimate Sona has is normally used defensively anyways since she can be killed so easily if she gets stunned just for a second. The problem is Sona's kit is incredibly horrible for late game and what ends up happening a lot times is their ADC will normally have more assist vs if they had a different support to actually feed their ADC by slowing/stunning targets.

nah sona's main and only problem is that you play sona outright to win the lane. The only problem is that for sona to win lane her lane has to push hard and poke the enemy under turret. While this is extremely effective it really opens you up to ganks so it's pretty risky. But if you can pull it off you can win lane really hard.

Her W gives you and your ally half a Janna shield each AND heals you both for half a Soraka heal.

Intentionally posting false numbers doesn't work. Literally anyone can check what you're saying and see that it's untrue.

Janna's shield is 80 points, lasts 5 seconds and gives bonus AD. Sona's "shield" is 35 points(less than your claim of "half"), lasts an unusably short 1.5 seconds and is melee-range. Both are on the same cooldown, but Janna's costs less mana.

Lol, what even? Sona is literally the worst healer in the game and you want to compare her to Soaraka, the best healer? Soraka's heal starts at 120 on a 4 second cooldown, to Sona's 30 at 10 seconds and then Soraka's continues to shorten with rank.

When used at the right time, her W power chord can make a huge difference in a fight. For example, if a Zed or Fizz jumps in, you can W power chord for a mini-exhaust damage reduction.

The problem with using any Power Chord other than Staccato: the cooldowns on her spells are markedly staggered because Fearless decided to intentionally nerf her when PBE complained her CD nerfs before that were already too severe. So why not make them worse by screwing over her passive as well? This single nerf directly led to the Q-bot playstyle she has and the under-usage of Tempo and Diminuendo.

Similarly, her E is not to be underestimated for chasing or kiting. It's really hard to escape from a Sona, especially if she E power chords you. It's excellent for disengage too if you're caught in a less than favourable fight (ult plus E to help team escape).

Her E is one of the worst mobility spells amongst supports and one of the weakest MS increases. Take into addition its long CD, her unjustified base MS nerf that even Sona haters like yourself were confused about and its melee cast-range, it becomes arguably just as bad a spell as Aria, despite having the highest return-per-cast. As for Tempo? Refer to my above explanation regarding Diminuendo.

Finally, her ult - AOE burst stun. What more is there to say?

Her ult is one of the shortest-ranged, longest-CD and weakest CC amongst support champs. It's completely outclassed by most of the class, particularly Annie who Aphromoo personally stated replaced Sona as THE GO-TO Flash+Ult engage support.

Yes, in the early game Q is prioritised for that sick harass. But in the mid-late game her entire kit is useful if used correctly.

Sona's kit is garbage at every point of the game, including Hymn of Valor. Without relying on damage, she's a useless champ. Without relying on artificial numbers from Spellblade/Echo, she does negligible damage. Lich and Echo are not support items and without them her winrate falls below 40%. However, these are items that can be built on literally ANY champion. There's not a single situation you should ever play Sona over ANY mage, as any champ can buy those same items and completely outperform her.

35 vs 40 is nitpicking, The duration is irrelevant, just as Janna's shields are generally clutch, so too are Sona's - generally you can shield as the projectiles are in the air

As for the heal, I misread part of the Wiki. You're being needlessly hostile. Bear in mind that Sona's heal scales off of missing health, so it's not nearly as much smaller as you claim. Obviously the main strength of W is the shield, though.

The mana cost is the biggest argument against Sona's W obviously.

Nobody's claiming that Sona's W is equivalent to Janna's E or Soraka's W though, and why does it have to be? Janna/Soraka don't have Sona's harass tool, so it balances out. All I was saying is that it's not a weak spell.

E is one of the worst mobility spells

A 20-30% (depending on AP) movement speed increase for 3 seconds on yourself (1.5 seconds on allies) is bad? OK buddy, get back to me when you find supports that can give their team better mobility.

particularly Annie who Aphromoo personally stated replaced Sona as THE GO-TO Flash+Ult engage support

Aphro is talking about that in the context of engages only. Why are you talking about this from an LCS perspective when you're in low Elo solo Q? That isn't relevant to you. If you check out Annie vs Sona on champion.gg, you can see that Sona has a MUCH HIGHER winrate for all game lengths.

Duration matters always. No other support in the game has one less than 4 seconds. For Janna and Lulu this is particularly important, because just like I said and you're intentionally choosing to ignore: JANNA'S SHIELD INCREASES DAMAGE OUTPUT. She ALWAYS shields the ADC, whether they're taking damage or not as it increases the ADC's own damage output.

As for the heal, I misread part of the Wiki. You're being needlessly hostile. Bear in mind that Sona's heal scales off of missing health, so it's not nearly as much smaller as you claim. Obviously the main strength of W is the shield, though.

The missing health portion of Sona's "heal" is very poor and does NOT make up for its crappy base. For it to make a difference, your target MUST be below 30% health or else. EVEN AT MAXIMUM POTENTIAL, HER HEAL IS STILL OUTCLASSED BY EVERY OTHER HEAL IN THE GAME.

Nobody's claiming that Sona's W is equivalent to Janna's E or Soraka's W though, and why does it have to be? Janna/Soraka don't have Sona's harass tool, so it balances out. All I was saying is that it's not a weak spell.

You claimed it and you still are. Aria is numerically the weakest spell on her entire kit. It has the worst bases, scalings, return per-cast and mana cost. I'd argue that it's actually one of the weakest spells in the entire game.

A 20-30% (depending on AP) movement speed increase for 3 seconds on yourself (1.5 seconds on allies) is bad? OK buddy, get back to me when you find supports that can give their team better mobility.

Nami gives a stronger MS boost on ALL FOUR of her abilities, Tidal Wave in particular.

Melee spells have longer range than melee AA's. To compare them in the manner you're purposefully attempting to do so is intentionally misleading propaganda. The truth of the matter is that Sona is essentially a melee champion, regardless of whatever falsities you create to try and hide this fact.

From all the sona's I've played with, I have yet to see meaningful decision making in which aura passive bonus they use. Like it's just Q spam with the occasional w thrown in which is weak as hell. It's like only Q,Q,Q,Q,Q and if they happen to get their "exhaust w" passive off it's only because they got the passive when Q was on CD.... I'm sorry but all I see is her being a Q bot.

IxtaliKing6 votes

Up voted. Justice for Sona and Karma!

Pika3105 votes

I mean, you've almost hit the nail on the head. Only thing is, her Q is shit too until you have Spellblade. Before that, it's super short-ranged and does negligible damage. I don't exaggerate when I say it's tied for the lowest base damage on a spell amongst the entire support class.

As for who did it? That would be an employee calling himself "Fearless."

Arf Arf Arf Arf12 votes

The Q isn't shit. It's only shit if you fail to autoattack. At level 1, Q gives you 40 + 20 extra AA damage (+20 if your ally attacks also). And that's ignoring the EXTRA +18 damage if it's a power chord autoattack.

So your Q has potential 80 damage normally, potential 98 damage with power chord. At level 1.

As you level up, power chord becomes insanely strong. For example, at level 6, you have level 3 Q. How much damage?

120 + 50 (Q bonus) + 70 (buffed power chord) + 50 (if your ally attacks also). Potentially 280 base damage. From a level 3 skill.

The range isn't short either if you want to poke without the AAs. 850 range is well outside of most bot lane's harass ranges, so if you don't want to risk getting close you can get cheap poke off even if it's a little weak.

Pika3105 votes

So that's 80 damage, with either perfect coordination from your ADC or using Staccato which only comes up every 3rd spell. Meanwhile Annie, Morg, Lulu, Thresh and many other supports just straight-up having 80 base damage without all these extras conditions and requirements, some of which are single-target spells. All of which also don't have to be within 550 units like Sona, a few of whom are actually double that range.

Also, you aren't allowed to say 850 range(which is a false number and the actual range is misleading anyways, but I'll ignore all that for now) and then talk about Staccato and the secondary active which both REQUIRE being within 550 range. These two propaganda directly contradict each other, you need to choose one or the other.

Next, despite being tied for the lowest base damage on a spell, Sona is also one of a very tiny number of supports that ONLY HAS ONE DAMAGE SPELL. The only others that share this trait would be Braum and Trundle or extreme off-supports like Nunu and such. Because of this fact, despite being completely damage-reliant and a mage support, her actual damage potential is the 2nd-lowest of the entire support class.

Arf Arf Arf Arf3 votes

Did you even read my comment? I specifically said that the range is useful for smaller cheap harass if you don't dare get the full damage off. Especially if you just want to stack up for a power chord. Considering how cheap a spell it is to use, it's not bad to just hit people with Q at range. Her base mana regen is much higher than Annie's, and her damage/mana is only a bit lower even without taking advantage of the extra damage.

Considering how cheap a spell it is to use, it's not bad to just hit people with Q at range.

Let's do a bit of math, shall we?

  • Sona's Hymn of Valor in the exact situation YOU YOURSELF ARE DESCRIBING has a value of 0.89 damage per mana.
  • Annie's Q has a value of 1.5 damage per mana.
  • Lulu's E has a value of 1.5 damage per mana.
  • Thresh's Q has a value of 1 damage per mana.
  • Nami's W has a value of 1 damage per mana.
  • Bard's Q has a value of 1.5 damage per mana.

If you aren't seeing the pattern yet, let me spell it out for you: Sona has very low return per cast and this is with only TWO factors. When more are added to the equation, she continues to fall further and further behind the pack.

1 damage spell?

Zilean

Because of Zilean's Rewind spell, it can be argued that he has 2 damage spells. Albeit casting just 1 spell, but twice in quick succession. By this same logic, I could also say Vel'Koz has 4 damage spells cause he can hold 2 charges of one.

Meanwhile, fact still stands Sona only has 1 damage spell. She doesn't get a reset like Zilean and she doesn't get an ammo system like Vel'Koz, she just straight-up only has 1 damage spell.

Ulquiorra9956 votes

If Q isn't shit and is insanely strong as you claim, how comes that Sona boasts below 40% winrate unless she builds artificial scaling in form of Lichbane and Echo? Still, let's analyze it.

Potential base damage of 280 seems alright... and then you notice that it's her only damage spell. Also, situations where both you and your ADC use the proc are rare unless you are highly coordinated; for the sake of realism let's assume 230 damage. Let's compare that to some of the other support champions.

Thresh, the League's resident generalist support. He ought to do less damage than Sona, right? Assume. level 3 E and level 1 Q/W. He deals 185 damage with spells, plus 62 from Flay, plus whatever souls he has. It clocks in at 247+ damage; higher than Sona unless she gets the best-case scenario. Also, Thresh's level 1 shield is lower than Sona's level 1 heal+shield for 5 base value, but lasts for almost 3x as much and has the insanely useful pull - so Thresh wins here too.

But Thresh has to hit his hook for the above scenario, so let's assume he can't aim it and go with someone else; Nami, assuming level 3 W and level 1 Q/E. We'll also assume that Nami misses her bubble, which is arguably hard to hit, and that she targets the enemy first with W. Her W+E damage totals at 270, mere 10 damage lower than Sona's except in her very best-case scenario - BUT Nami will heal more than Sona's heal+shield combined, has a better MS boost and will slow the enemy without having to waste damage. Nami wins in all categories - doing more with two spells than Sona does with three.

Okay, let's take Annie now; another support who brings powerful lane damage and AoE hard CC. Assume level 3 Q, level 1 W and E. Annie will deal a total of 220 unavoidable damage, + 20 for every time you hit her back - meaning that with just 2 autoattacks against her she almost breaks even with Sona's best case. Still, Annie is far stronger in this matchup because she's guaranteed a hard CC in her combo; while not directly damaging, it will ensure you take far more damage from her ADC. Conclusion: Annie wins.

TL;DR: It is not that Sona's Q feels like shit. It is that everything else in her kit feels like shit. If you want to compare, compare entire kits. Sona either maxes Q and builds crutches in form of LB/Ludens or becomes useless.

I don't think you play Sona then, because she's actually a beast. Get Windspeaker's (either 12/18/0 or 0/18/12), grab Tear + Sheen early, and max Q. Get 1 point in each ability by level 3 or 4.

Her Q is your harass tool and main damage souce.

Her W provides heals and a shield, scaling up depending on how much % health a target is missing.

Her E gives movespeed, and quite a bit of it. Longer duration per tag.

Her R wins teamfights instantly.

Sorry, but Sona's fine and it's kinda nit-picky to argue otherwise. Downvote you go.

I agree with what you're saying completely. At the same time it's also worth noting that, yes you're correct that all she has is damage, BUT her damage output pre-4.13 was SIGNIFICANTLY higher than what she has now. As a matter-of-fact, her own personal damage potential is one of the lowest in the game. The entirety of damage sources has to come from artificial item scalings or else it's like you're shooting beanbags. The enemy may say "ouch" and think they're in pain, but her damage will rarely be considered fatal.

Another person complaining because they are bad at sona. Sona is just fine, she is a powerful champion that can be played as tanky or full ap ( i prefer full ap ) shes fine, and if you think her kit is bad then there is something wrong. Her q does massive damage especially when her passive goes off. Her w can greatly reduce the damage someone is doing alongside do a good heal and give a sheild. her e can do a good slow and do a huge speed up. and her ult not only does massive damage but also makes her other abilities even better.

I mean lets be honest its been forever since that rework and people still cant get over it? I'm surprised people aren't still complaining about illaoi... or even gangplank for that matter..

Legit question.

Let's say item 3100 item 3285 are crutch items for Sona. If they're so intrinsically powerful, then why aren't other supports using them and seeing more success than Sona?

On the other hand, if they're only as powerful as they are here because they synergize with her kit, then how does this differ from other meta cases? Elise would probably be weak without item 1402 item 1401 as options, but does the fact that she's reliant on them make her a weak champion? If so, then why so? If not, then how does this differ from Sona's case?

Sona has the 2nd-lowest "burst" of the entire support class. She literally does zero damage until she has fake damage from Lich and Luden's.

Sona's "aid" comes from 350-unit spells. On top of that, the effects themselves are markedly underwhelming, before you even take into consideration they're all 1-shot abilites and a super long cooldown. To make matters EVEN WORSE, they have absurd restrictions placed on them in spite of already being gimped by the 2 former points I just stated: Q only procs on basic attacks AND NOTHING ELSE and doesn't work against structures anymore; Aria's "shield" lasts an unusably short duration, at BEST only half the duration of pre-4.13; Celerity is just complete crap, Fearless himself has already admitted so about both it and W too.

Sona's ult is one of the worst in the game. Its range is pathetically short and thin, its cooldown is extremely long and the CC it provides is very weak and short in duration. If I was gonna pick a support solely for their R, I'd rather have: Annie Bard Braum Janna Leona Nami Morgana Zyra

Sona has the 2nd-lowest "burst" of the entire support class. She literally does zero damage until she has fake damage from Lich and Luden's.

More burst than Nami, more burst than Soraka, so your first point is a lie. I don't understand how Lichbane and Luden's are fake damage since they appear to kill targets.

Second is more opinion, but I disagree. cutting time for your team to reach objectives is huge, reducing damage with your shield is huge, the heals add up, the damage on basics add up.

Your third point is the most hilarious thing I have ever read on the forums. Sona's ult alone put her into god-tier for supports for years before her rework and they never touched how it actually works at all. Comparing it to annie with her heavy telegraph, bard who also makes targets immune to damage and freezes allies too, Braum's MUCH slower animation, Janna when inexperienced players save enemies almost as often as their team mates... You are downright deluded.

im sure im gunna get hate or down vote but oh well.... i love sona she is my favorite ^_^

for me its about how much in enjoy a character and sona's passive play style is perfect for me. her Q seems to work fine for me (i can usually get the enemey to about half health with a good q and power cord in the early game). her heals and shields do what i need them to do when im in a pinch. E is great for me and my team for the speed boost. her ult is great to start a team fight or get your team out of a team fight.

im just a casual LoL players so i dont pay attention to all these stats that are being thrown around in this forum. im sure that all the complaints are valid as well, but in the games i play i dont see whats wrong with her. what i do understand is that she a passive character though. everything she does gives out buffs for her team (besides her ult). i dont know of any other character that has all their core abilities that give out team buffs. i couldnt tell you the % of all the buffs, but any buff is a good buff compared to your teammates having nothing.

like i said before im just a casual player but if there is something wrong with sona i personally dont see it but no matter what i will love playing my dj sona ^_^

I think her buffs in a team fight are more meaningful than you realize. They might still be a little weaker than you'd like and her auto-Q-auto burst may seem like an uncharacteristic chunk of her power budget, but it really has been a pretty iconic part of Sona since the beginning and without that kind of poking threat in lane, I don't think Sona would work that well as a support.
