Keep in mind
support for a time was the highest win rate malz isnt even banned in my elo anymore around diamond hes just useless cause even with his passive hes so exposed to getting oneshot in teamfights
I don't remember Sion support being the highest win rate, but even if he was I'd imagine his playrate was really low. He also has loads of CC and could feasibly be a strong pick. Finally, even though he wasn't popular, I personally thought he was sleeper OP top lane (and later that patch he rose to the 3rd highest win rate top).
With Malz, he's the 3rd highest win rate middle in plat+ and has a nearly 3% play rate. He's got a 0.65% play rate top with the highest win rate. The nerfs hit his jungling, but he's still very viable as a laner. If he's getting one-shot through his passive, it sounds like either your diamond team comps have evolved a lot better to deal with him, or diamond Malzahar's really suck at building properly. His ideal build has Rylai's, Liandries, Zhonya's, and Abyssal sceptre - that's a LOT of tanky stats. There's no business for him to be getting one shot unless he's severely out of position. I never understand these arguments... Jinx, Ashe, Sivir, Twitch, MF, Kog'maw, Varus, Jhin, and Draven all function perfectly fine as ADCs without huge problems of not having dashes to escape/reposition. Why is it that Malzahar can get caught so much more easily? Learn to position properly and you have no issue, and he has a load of HP/armor/MR, an invulnerability active, a silence, a voidling to intercept skillshots, and a suppression, to make up for it if he does get caught.
I don't know what's going on in diamond. I do know that in mid-high gold I see malzahar banned in over half of my games. I see malzahar's side win the majority of the games he's picked in. He's difficult to deal with in general, has a lot of strengths with immobility as his only real weakness. As a jinx main I sort of laugh at that - I'm every bit as immobile and don't have nearly the defensive steroids or ability to build defensively and still output that damage level, and people actually complained in S5 that Jinx was insanely OP. She has never been anywhere near what Malzahar is at post-rework (and frankly, I banned Malz pre-rework as I thought he was sleeper OP).
