How to keep your cool.

Hi everyone. I am in dire need of assistance. I have become what i have hated since my beginnings of playing league of legends. I have turned into a toxic player. I am currently in med school, with a lot of stuff on my mind, and i want to be able to relax when i play league of legends. I never used to get mad at people for being legitimately bad, but lately i have noticed myself becoming very frustrated with lower skill level players. I have never been one to rage and curse at people who are trying their best. the only thing that ever really got me upset was people giving up and rage quitting. I have been banned for 2 weeks due to toxic behavior ( i raged every single game for 3 days straight) then i got unbanned and had to play normal draft mode. I played all my games down to 2 remaining and got banned again, ( i played about 140 games, i had to win 40, i won 38 and lost 102...) quite infuriated at this ratio, mostly due to other players being extremely toxic and setting me off as well. now i am banned for another 2 weeks, during which my elo will decay and i will have to replay many ranked games to return to my previous rank.

What are some ways you guys keep your cool in a game full of toxic players? i'm not one to flame people, unless they start it. But once they do, i let things get out of hand and end up banned :(

I am ACKNOWLEDGING that i am becoming a toxic player, due to being around toxic players for so long. and i am asking for help.

I personally feel like reform needs to come to league of legends games. there needs to be a way to remove yourself from the toxic environment before it gets to the point where you lose control. i feel that the 20 minute minimum surrender time, and 9/10 times your team wont surrender so you're stuck with toxic players has a lot to do with it. You get people who become toxic at 5 minutes in and you have to deal with it for 15 minutes. you can't just go afk to get away from it, or you get banned. you can mute the person, but after they've already put you in a bad mindset it's very hard to stay positive.

how do you do it? :(

focus on getting better because in reality it doesnt matter if your teammates are bad you can still win plenty of other people have done it.

Stop playing ranked, and just have fun

I think you just need to take a break from the game buddy, It's messing you up

Step away, watch some streams, sounds like you are forcing the game too much. Just like anything else in life if you just grind it out and are not having fun you will burn yourself out. Maybe just take a break. Probably not what you want to do but at this rate I think it might be best. Good luck!

I've tried taking a break. no matter how long a break i take, it doesn't change anything. i don't wan't to mute everyone in the game the moment it starts, but that might be what i have to do.

If you are trying to keep YOURSELF from being toxic, the easiest solution is just not to type. You can even unbind the enter key if you feel like you have to. If you are trying to deal with OTHER toxic players, mute them as soon as they start to become toxic (not at the start of the game. Only when they start flaming).

I would also recommend playing some normals and trying just to focus on having fun. Winning isn't everything.

What the others have said is useful advice but try to rationalize it this way. People who flame are doing so to feel more secure about themselves. Think of gang members and how they overdo the acting tough bit. Would you honestly respect someone who's self-esteem comes from breaking laws and bullying others. The same logic applies to lol players but in this case you have people who use anonymity as a way to feel superior to people. If toxic people were only interested in winning they would never step foot in soloque. Instead they would always group with players they feel are at a appropriate skill level. But this is not the case interestingly enough a lot of toxic players are smurfs. All you need to do to not be toxic is recognize how embarrassing it is to be. You've heard my reasoning on why toxic players are pitiable but it wouldn't be hard to invent others.

When i start getting shiit on i make excuses and then become toxic, but you gotta remember it is just a game.

Feeling frustrated at other players to the point that you become toxic yourself is a matter of mindset. I'm not denying that toxic players exist, but you have the choice to control your reaction to their toxic behavior. Ask yourself, what about the behavior of others makes you feel frustrated or angry? How can you interpret that in a different way so that it doesn't feel personal?

Ask yourself, what is your purpose for playing? Is it to rank well or to have fun or both? What do you need to do in order to fulfill your purpose? Does being toxic yourself detract from your purpose?

If all else fails, it may help to get a duo partner, or form a team with non-toxic people, and mute all chat in games.

If you cant beat them join them. I topped out at S2 this season. It was fun but i found out that with my skill level i probably wasnt going much higher. Now I have tons more fun in ranked in B5. Because anytime i get a troll of an afk i get to try new things and watch other people rage in game. It is hilarious and truly more fun than trying to conquer trolls in a climb up the ranked ladder. Try it. When someone tries to troll you and they find out you cant be trolled u get to piss off the trolls also. And as long as you dont "say anything toxic in chat"(stupidest method ever) there are no consequences.

-Honestly, just mute them. Not muting people to avoid seeming like you're butthurt is only going to make them continue raging at you, and make you rage in return. Your pride is not worth you getting banned if you really want to have fun and enjoy playing the game.

-Learn to forgive people's mistakes to avoid raging at them; look at yourself and ask if you would have done the same thing, and how it could have been avoided. If you feel the need to criticize then be extremely polite, because we all know how hard it is to communicate valid criticism over the internet. That's mostly what I do. Just have a positive attitude going in and tell yourself that, win or lose, you'll try your best to make this a positive experience for you and everyone around you.

-This might sound weird, but there have been instances where people can request and receive chat restrictions. This might not be something you want, but it makes communication a strategic element so that you won't want to waste time raging at people when you could be shot calling.

Make some time to talk to someone IRL. Med school (from what I've heard) is a bear and a half, and is probably eroding all your patience. Find a good therapist, or a friend who's a good listener, and try to get your RL frustrations worked out, or at the very least accepted, before diving into an online game.

Unfortunately the nature of this game doesn't make it a good stress reliever. It can actually piss you off more than you were before playing it. I'd suggest playing something else, or at the very least playing norms for fun where you don't care about the outcome.

And really GUYS THIS IS JUST A GAME! THIS GAME WILL DIE EVENTUALLY AS ALL GAMES DO! AND ANY TIME THAT YOU SPENT BEING UPSET OVER THIS GAME WILL HAVE BEEN COMPLETELY WASTED IN THE GRAND (haha) SCHEME OF YOUR INCREDIBLY SHORT EXISTENCE ON THIS SPECK OF MUD FLOATING IN A VOID!

EXPERIENCE LOVE AND LIFE! DON'T SIT HERE CLICKING IN ANGER!

YOU WILL FUCKING REGRET EVERY MOMENT YOU DID! PROBABLY SOONER THAN YOU THINK :D

You sit here thinking you're going to live forever. The clock is ticking kids. You keep thinking you have all this time, that your "real life" hasn't started yet. Guess what? YOUR REAL LIFE IS RIGHT NOW!

And you're wasting it.

You'll be on your death bed in disbelief thinking that you never got to do any of the things you thought you had time to do. And you'll realize you wasted years sitting here raging at some neck beard Sona for feeding.

Marinate on that.

Yet you're on this forum wasting your real life by replying to this topic on the forum of a game that isn't even a good stress reliever...

  1. DO. NOT. TYPE. Don't even do it. If it's not a specific, vanilla command/demand/suggestion, don't say a damn thing. Especially if you're feeling a bit stressed.

  2. If you can trust yourself to converse, be mature about it. If someone's trying to get on your case, don't insult them back. Leave it alone. Things get worse when two flames meet.

  3. At the end of the day, sometimes you HAVE to lose. It's a lousy fact you have to come to grips with. You can do more than fine in your play, and someone else in another lane can feed 10 deaths early and it's all over. Just a part of the game. Come to terms with it.

  4. Vent on the forums instead. Don't name shame, but sometimes making a topic and conversing with people about your frustrations is way better than getting banned.

If someone is being a total jackass I just go with the flow (how I handle dicks in real life). For example if someone is going to call me a faggot I just agree with them. If toxic people don't get the reaction they want and you just kind of go with it, then it often times pisses them off. Yeah they might keep being toxic but pissing them off keeps them from getting creative. To further explain the not creative thing how many times is someone going to call me a faggot (pissing someone off when they only have one thing causes them to keep using that one thing) before they realize that I just don't care? Eventually they will switch their sights to someone else (so at least they are no longer flaming you), or just stop spamming in chat all together. Mute also works, but I don't find as much enjoyment in it.

As for bad teammates there really isn't anything you can do except suck it up and deal with it (then report them after the game for unskilled which honestly will help them in the long run). However, you can mitigate your frustrations by playing with a friend or two. I don't play on my own too often because I know that even if I play super well and get super fed (I have lost so many games as 18+ kills 7- deaths on zed I lost count) that if the rest of my team is not playing well or just bad I won't win. However, I have friend (jungle main) who I can rely on to get me fed (mid main) and not feed himself so the when the rest of the team does bad we can carry and coordinate them. Even if you play bad and/or your friend plays bad having someone to joke around with in these shitty games makes the game much more enjoyable (fine someone you can skype or use any sort of voice chat with).

Honestly, i just might unbind my enter key. Or bind every key to flash, so if i try to talk to someone, i flash instead.

You see the blue bar at the top of the chat? You can grab that and drag it aaaall the way to the bottom right corner of the screen. Can't see players being rude, don't have to respond. Gg.

Mute everyone before game starts, if they wanna communicate with you then tell them to use pings before you mute them, by reading your post this is the only way to control your toxicity since it comes from chat and not actual gameplay, or you can play ARAM only and stay away from ranked.
