Is Tankplank still a thing?

So I'm no longer quite sure the state of Gangplank. His laning is difficult and the incentive to scale up is still mediocre, especially now that lethality items are getting power pulled off of them. He can still go Crit, but that means he's back to a more inconsistent, pricier build path and play style once again.

item 3078 item 3031 item 3087 item 3009 item 3053 item 3036

That's still fierce as hell, just those first two are such gold sinks it's hard ever to get that far along. So what I'm curious about now is if Tankplank might dust itself off with some of the new masteries (the new bond of stone doesn't sound too bad to hand to the jungler)

How would:

item 3078 item 3153 (<-- now with more AD and less AS, useful for front line skirmishing where Tankplank can survive) item 3053 and then more or less full tank, item 3047 item 3110 item 3102

GP's base damage is pretty high, no doubt about that, but it isn't enough to threaten the frontline if you are going tank, while you don't have the mobility tools to threaten the backline. The reason he's played full AD isn't because he doesn't do enough base damage as a fighter - he does. The problem is that he can't apply it to the enemies that most fighters try to apply their damage to. Since he has such poor target selection, he needs to be able to do respectable damage against the frontline too, which might be all he can hit.

Thank you for your very valid point! Perhaps I am wistful for a less stressful mode of play for an old favourite of mine.
