#Kit nuances and tricks

  1. Mini Gnar's Q (Boomerang) only damages each enemy once, however it deals damage going forward and backwards, so use this to your advantage if you missed.

  2. Gnar gets a burst of health entering Mega Gnar mode, use it especially when you are about to die for clutch health. The fastest way to do this is to use your ultimate Gnar!

  3. Mega Gnar's bonus ad is applied to his base AD, so the effectiveness of sheen items is increased for tons of damage item 3078

  4. You cannot hop on wards, but you can go over walls (even with Mega Gnar's jump, though you have to be close to the wall)

  5. You can collect your boomerang mid-Hop, use it on an enemy then jump on them to get the boomerang back as well as positioning yourself favorably for the kill.

  6. During Mega Gnar transformation, if you transform using hop and it hits a unit, you double hop in Mega Gnar form. But only as the transformation move.

  7. Mini-Gnar and Mega Gnar's cooldowns are shared, the only ones that aren't are the W, remember this as you use abilities in either form.

  8. You can collect left-over boulders from Mega Gnar as Mini Gnar and reduce the cooldown of your boomerang.

  9. You can actually poke from farther away by throwing your boomerang backwards, and not catching it. However, this is extremely difficult to land (mlg Xx420yordlescopexX)

  10. When you transform into Mega Gnar, you gain a large amount of health. However, you keep the same % of health that you had in Mega Gnar when you go back into Mini Gnar, building tanky can result in you restoring more health when you transform back.

  11. Gnar can use abilities in mid-air in both forms, however he cannot autoattack. use this to your advantage for stuff like mid-air stuns and ultimates.

I have confirmed that Boomerang Toss and GNAR! can work midair, but nothing else does.

#Tips on using your rage correctly

  1. Don't build up a lot of rage early game, you transform roughly at lvl 2 if you auto attack a lot. You will not be able to kill them (unless you and your jungler are mentally linked).

  2. If you bring summoner 12 you can coordinate your Mega Gnar transformations for devastating ganks.

  3. The best times to Mega Gnar cheese are lvls 3, 5, and 6, with lvl 6 being especially powerful. Keep in mind cooldowns are shared between forms.

  4. When in Mini Gnar form with no rage, stay as far away from enemy champions as possible (unless you are ridiculously fed). **You will die **due to lack of damage.

  5. If you are adc Gnar, you will want to avoid autoattacking unless necessary, if they engage just when you transform back into Mini Gnar you will probably lose that teamfight.

#Build tips

CDR and attack speed are both equally important on Gnar, so here are some items you'll want to pick up.

item 3142 < Not a single stat you don't want

item 3078 < Tons of damage, explained earlier

item 3158 < You pick these up to round off your CDR from runes and masteries and Ghostblade/BC

item 3071 < Expensive, but worth it if you're fed

item 3153 < Amazing active, great source of AS, also has much needed lifesteal

item 3035 < Mostly optional, pair this Trinity Force (spellblade proc is physical damage :D) over Black cleaver

Getting a mixture of these items will ensure you will have good penetration, AS, and CDR. This is if you are going full Glass Cannon however, which is usually when you are going ADC Gnar (or insanely fed)

#Top and Mid Gnar are gonna need some tanky items like these:

item 3143 < Nice active, not bad stats, but the nerfs hurt :(

item 3102 < So, why this over item 3065 ? Both are great buys, but I prefer you not blowing up instantly, which is the whole point of buying defensive items anyway.

item 3065 < If you absolutely hate Banshees, then pick this up.

item 3068 < This is a bit more of a risky pickup, but if are pretty much the initiator then go for it.

I will also answer any addditional questions you have about Gnar.

These a good observations.

I'm all for any other information you can put up about Gnar. Unfortunately, the PBE store is down so I'm unable to purchase and test out the champion myself.

Do you know how far Boomerang travels if it isn't caught? I'm assuming it isn't global (wouldn't that be funny), but I'm wondering in case you can make plays like TP to a ward or something down range to catch your boomerang again (not sure why you would, but it'd be funny if you could). Or even for the more practical case of hopping to catch a boomerang. Thanks!

I suspect that Gnar will be able to go every lane and several roles(ADC, Bruiser/fighter, tank)

I'm going to be on PBE tomorrow, so I hope to test out the weird or niche roles Gnar may have!

I doubt he will use Mana, the video showed he iused a bar that wasnt blue. Its still speculations but I believe he will be a Fighter // Tank so items like Zephyr item 3172 , Frozen Hammer item 3022 and Mercurial Scimitaritem 3139 would be more useful for him, sacrificing the advantage of Trinity Force for some tankyness.

For number 2, I'm a little confused. He turns into mega gnar when mini gnar uses ultimate? I thought it was just his passive, but I guess that's good that he can control it if he ults and turns into big gnar?? EDIT; Also confused on number 10, you seem to be saying that by ulting while in mini form, you turn into mega, I thought mini form had no ult (just a passive on the ult)?

MrSc0tty7/30/2014, 11:28:59 AM1 votes

Question: can the boomerang just be thrown out for Manaless waveclear on the creep wave? The tooltip read "hits the first enemy and returns" but did it mean champ or minion?

MugyvrNinja7/30/2014, 3:01:20 PM1 votes

I was wondering during his hop can he be disrupted mid cast by like a displacement or knock up. Possibly Vi q or Sejuani ?

ChaosThief7/30/2014, 5:17:54 PM1 votes

I got a few things after playing gnar. 1: You can hop on allied units. It counts all units as an extra hop. 2:His W passive, with enough attack speed, will prevent foes from outrunning you. 3: He is very flexible. Feel free to adjust if you need a damage dealer or a tank. If you're a damage dealer, make sure you adjust for mega gnar, and build some tankiness, unless you are confident you can avoid their carries or if you won't fight them in mega gnar form.

EDIT: Be warned, Gnar is extremely buggy at this point. He will cause bugsplats, and DO NOT ATTEMPT BARON. Baron is guarenteed to cause a crash.

I'd like to see his passive be up for just a tad longer. From what I've read, he was supposed to be a tank or fighter, but he's more of a poke til you can win the duel, which isn't exactly bad but doesn't promote a tank build ._.

So I would suggest:

  1. increasing the Mega Gnar form by 5 (20 total) or 3 if you think he'll be a bit to strong.
  2. Shyvana thingy where aaing or using abilities gives you a little more time
  3. Make you able to get the form faster.

I know a lot of you will not agree with me, but I've seen quite a bit of Gnar gameplay and he seems to be in ranged form, not 70% of the time, but 80% of the time.

I was thinking about something awesome dealing with Gnar! I was thinking about another mechanic with Big Gnar. I was thinking if Gnar throws a Q/Boulder and it hits a projectile (Zeds Shuriken, Nidalee's Spear, Gnars Boomerang) it would be cool if the boulder stopped or blocked the projectile like Yasuo's wind wall, BUT it shouldn't block things like Ashe arrow or Ezreal Trueshot Barrage! I think it would be awesome!

Question. I'm getting confused by the wording of my friends. Does his ult activate on it's own when he gains max fury? Also doesn't his ult icon disappear when he uses it?

FluxBound7/31/2014, 4:24:31 AM1 votes

Thanks for the tips, but number 5 made me wonder, Can you catch a boomerang while it's still going forward? ie: you Q then Flash or hop passed it

CattCaller7/31/2014, 10:43:05 PM1 votes

Finally got a chance to buy and play Gnar. First game wrecked my opponent who was also playing Gnar. Just seemed like he was floundering about with him.

There's another thing that I've noticed and have used to great effect. After applying 2 stacks of Gnar's 'W', if you hit them with your 'Q', you get the bonus damage, as well as the bonus speed boost. This allows you to keep in range for consecutive attacks and 'W' speed and damage boosts. The icing on it is that if you are able to control your positioning enough, you can catch your boomerang on it's return and continue your chase/kill.

I was able to completely decimate my opponent with this strategy. He was confused to the wild amount of damage I was doing to him with my 'Q' when in actuality it was my 'W' proc. It's a great way to play mind games, and forces your opponent into less optimal positioning situations when they see a trend of your boomerang chunking them for a decent amount of damage. Which then leads them to believe that you're damage is all done when you've shot your 'Q'.

A little thing I noticed and used to my advantage that I feel should help everyone out.

does "big gnar" form's size change with the passive's HP as he levels?

Emmerlaus8/1/2014, 6:07:55 AM1 votes

I didnt play Gnar (and I dont know how people did it too) but I wanna know about Item customization, to have a better idea.

If Attack speed is good for him, should Runaan Hurricane be a good choice? Because I think of a combinaison of Runaan Hurricane and The Black Cleaver could be good in this case.

so... Boots - Trinity Force - Black Cleaver - Runaan Hurricane - Frozen Hammer (with of course 21 Offense and 9 Def mastery)

Is a On-Hit Effect build is good for him or pure AD?

Elphrihaim8/9/2014, 8:43:31 PM1 votes

However, you keep the same % of health that you had in Mini Gnar

Isn't it the other way-- When you revert from Mega Gnar to Mini Gnar, you keep the % of the health that you had, and when you go from Mini Gnar to Mega Gnar you get flat health?

Daxey98/20/2015, 4:17:38 AM1 votes

So does size of gnar effect his w and r?

KOHH7/29/2014, 11:20:05 PM1 votes

Well do you know why the Boomerang is sometimes not at max range?

FyshinaTux7/30/2014, 9:34:53 AM

I would imagine that using the passive right around the middle of the skirmish would actually be best, take SOME damage, but effectively "heal" it back after coming out of Mega Gnar thus, effectively winning the trade/skirmish.
