What's the general opinion on Ryze?

Fresh from VGU, he was not very popular, and was thought to be less oppressive than the previous Ryze. Was thought to be fairly balanced (many even thought he was weak). But been reading some recent posts, most of them complaining about Ryze. Two months ago, I would be complimented if I carried or pulled off a sick ultimate with my team. Now, there are no kind words. His play rate jumped up, became ban-worthy, and not seen positively.

What do you think about Ryze? Is this guy considered nearly cancer-tier atm? Seems like it from the top posts.

Silver(ish) ryze main(ish) speaking here so do with this knowledge what you will. Right after the VGU I was like "wow he sucks" then after a short period of time I was like "my god he is disgustingly powerful". He's insanely op in the hands of a player who is good at Ryze. He'll never be balancable at the current rate. Check out MMs post if you want more information on it. http://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/de/c/gameplay-balance/aFaWHPZH-real-talk-ryze-will-never-be-balanced-as-long-as-riot-tries-to-preserve-his-identity

Real talk; Ryze wants never to be as long as Riot tries to preserve his identity Malicious Metal (EUW) wrote 11 days ago in gameplay Ryze has always been a balancing nightmare. He's a mage who's therefore a Hyper Carry Who has burst Who has DPS Who has BURST per second Who's moderately tanky Who has point and click targeted CC Who doubled dips in items Because of his damage scaling off his Mana

The most recent rework only added WAVE CLEAR

Not only that but it is a good thing to do.

Let's face it, most of Ryze's identity is in fact. IMO Mages should make trades offs, lacquering in DPS but having a nice burst with usually.

But Ryze is just a monster, especially in the hands of experienced players and Riot desperately clinging to this idea of mana based machine. They should have just focused on making him the rogue Mage and not just cling to gameplay mechanics that just so unfair and unbalanceable.

But hey, maybe it's just me and he's perfectly fine and healthy.

Like, the Ryze Rework Meme exists for a reason.

I'm really flattered that I'm so good I make Ryze look like a monster :3

Though I honestly think he needs nerfs. I've been calling for nerfs since the VGU, but people down voted me to hell then. Definitely was overtuned on release, his shield/MS boost is taking a slight hit next patch. Nice to see people coming to their senses. Strong pick. Straight foward with little weaknesses.

But people are starting to exaggerate. They speak as if his root lasted 4 seconds, and are calling for over the top changes. I take that as a compliment when Ryze is said to excel at so many things. Wouldn't you say that a versatile champion is good, rather than a one dimensional champion (i.e Tryndafuckingmere). I legitimately think Ryze is a very well designed and entertaining champion, and that's why I play him. This version I consider the best out of all 4 of them.

_If you want a champion that excels at EVERYTHING, you have Kayle. Super well rounded champion. Physical damage, magic damage, spell caster, auto attacker, heals and speed boost allies, damage and slow enemies, is melee, is ranged, can build any item in the game, only champion that can be viable in all 5 positions, etc... I love Kayle. _

Everything that becomes a balance issue on the boards gets blown out of proportion. I think with a few moderate tweaks they could make him either a tanky battlemage or a short range burst mage.

The only problem that most people I know have with Ryze is his point-and-click rune prison. Every other champ with a similar snare needs to hit a skillshot (or at least a semi-skill shot) in order to just screw someone over. But not Ryze.

Ryze doesn't seem that overpowered to me and players know about his weak early game. Early game, Ryze doesn't do much because he can't burst as fast due to his mana pool or keep it at a consistent level. This is typically when ganks come in on Ryze to injure his game progress. Late game he comes an absolute monster to anyone once he hits 4K mana or even 8K. This is when Yasuos, LeBlancs, Tryndameres, and Rengars/meta champs fall off to me because they're too weak to fight me.

Even tanks like Darius struggle with me late game because I can take 1/4 of their HP every 2-3 seconds with my combo.

If you don't let Ryze hit his late game, he's not an unstoppable monstrosity(like Nasus).

However, his ultimate is SOOO GOOOD when used right. I always use it when they kill the river crab to get vision on Baron or they think they're safe when we're hiding in the bush. Boom - ace and Baron steal.

Pretty balanced to me as if you stop his early game you can delay him long enough to not do anything and take the nexus.
