Ryze in 6.3

The nerfs to Ryze this patch had made him very weak. Five spell casts with Arcane Mastery. It is difficult for a summoner who does not use Ryze to understand how big this is. Imagine if Cassiopeia could only use Twin Fang twice in 5 seconds. She would no longer be the machine gun mage she was, and that is what Ryze no longer is.

Here is a list of things I would rather they nerfed instead: -Halfed the base damage of all spells at all levels -Removed the spell vamp, AoE, and movement speed on his ult -Made him spawn with no gold in the beginning of the game -Took away his scroll, his spell book, his lore -Set Rune Prison to .5/.6/.7/.8/.9 seconds and spell flux no longer gave MR shred

Ryze has been the lowest win rate champion for a while. Even in high levels of play, he doesn't do very well. His passive, q, w, and e have all been nerfed since his rework. But this patch, he is now a terrible pick. By putting a spell cap, they have removed Ryze's very essence. It would be as if Ashe's slows were removed.

If Ryze truly is overpowered, I CHALLENGE anybody to prove this. I doubt even Faker would be able to do shit with this sad excuse for a mage.

Update: 5 people down voted. Is it because you think Ryze is too strong, or is it you think I'm bashing on Ryze? Please tell me (btw I wasn't dissing faker, I meant I didn't think Ryze would be played in ranked by him this patch).

Everything you suggest would destroy him, even more.

Honestly, the passive change feels better now. His ultimate has a huge uptime, meaning Ryze has access to mana efficient wave clear earlier. In regards to your last point, I've been meaning to climb to diamond, and I don't mind doing so with Ryze.

Thank you for your comment. I suppose I should play a bit more aggressively in the mid game. But by the time I hit level 11, my ultimate takes even longer to come off cool downs, because of the shortened Arcane Mastery, and therefore less spells casts to reduce cool down. I'm not sure how to play him after this. I consider it a massive nerf. I think it's good they're putting him in a less disruptive state, but this spell cap is the wrong direction in balancing him. I'm not being sarcastic when I say this, but I would sincerely want to see you climb to diamond using Ryze, so I could learn from your play style with the new changes.

Ok, I'm doing this math in my head instead of in a custom, so it might be off.

Ryze ult CD: 40 Ryze Q CD: 4

Base of 20% cdr, assuming nothing from runes / masteries. Turns Ryze Q into 3.2s-, ulti into 32s. 5 spell casts, drops it to a 16s CD. 10s after the initial proc falls off. Prior Ryze ult was 60s. 48s with 20% CDR. 10 spell casts to get ulti on the same level as live. That means 2x as much mana, and that assumes you're able to combo effeciently enough to get 10 casts in during one trigger of Arcane Mastery.

That being said, don't play him mid lane. Mid lane turns him into a mid range mage, around Anivia / Viktor / TF style champion. I just don't see him having any good matchups. He doesn't have poke, reliable CC, and his damage is about on par (single target). Same logic as Vladimir. You play top lane, against melees that can't abuse your weak early game. -- Ryze can also slightly abuse melee's with how strong his E is.

Ryze should be able to get off 10-15 spell casts during his passive. I agree he should be played top lane, lots of great match ups. But this nerf destroyed his mid game, because even if he got close enough to the enemy, he wouldn't be able to burst them down. It may seem like a buff, but it's not! It's to compensate for the nerfs so they don't hit so hard.

I'll try changing my play style. Weave in combat when my ultimate is up, and then back off.

Be honest, Ryze is not a good pick now, or at least definitely not broken. Otherwise you would have played him in ranked and climbed easily. You're platinum, and Ryze is considered to be overpowered in higher ranks.

Many people don't like me because I play Ryze. Do you consider Ryze a skill-less, and that he has little counterplay? I don't want other summoners to look down on me because of my champ instead of my skill. Thanks for the tips btw, but I sadly learned not to go mid when there was an opposing Xerath (pray this matchup doesn't happen).

This might be personal bias, but I never saw Ryze as a burst mage. More of a rotation mage. Albeit, the perma-snare let him burst pretty well, but beyond that, other champions did it better.

As for rank, I've been slightly lazy. Somewhere between a smurf, and college. There's also the fact that everyones going AP mids right now, and AP jungle is popular. It's hard to justify an AP top in addition.

Ryze has an incredibly low skill floor, and amazing skill cap. Same logic with Riven. An average riven is an autowin for most top laners. BoxBox is a much harder Riven to go against. People are going to hate the champion for the skillfloor. And it's incredibly hard to differentiate between skill floor Ryze, and skill cap Ryze. It's all about damage output, which appears to be the same.

Danjeng

The difference in damage between a low level Ryze and a high level Ryze is massive. The Ryze's at platinum seem to be a free win, but I assure you it requires a lot of skill. A Ryze in bronze (for example, me) can't do anything with him.

The only thing Ryze has is dealing damage (and taking some damage). I really don't like the recent changes, because they took away that one thing that he was able to do. It would be more understandable to nerf his damage output if Ryze was a mobile champ, or has amazing utility.

This change not only makes him a burst mage (5 skills is hardly a rotation), but further makes it harder to differentiate between good and bad Ryze's (by placing a hard cap on spell casts).

There are two contrasting views on why Ryze is overpowered. One is that he requires no skill. Just face roll and get a pentakill. But when argued that he has the lowest win rate, the response is that it's only because of the lower skilled players dragging it down, that he's an unstoppable beast higher up.

In this patch, it is no longer true. Before, his win rate would increase as with rank. Then bam! This patch hit. Now he's last place from Bronze through Diamond. This patch made it so that even the best of players would have to play like the worst. Ryze is supposed to be able to outduel nearly anyone in the game (according to championselect.net and personal experience), but it doesn't seem like he's able to do this anymore.

I'm biased though. I've never felt the terror of being permasnared. Does it make me more hated than Teemo when I do it? Sometimes I see the opportunity to just go with it, but I don't do it in fear of being known as a cheap player. I think that he has a lot of counterplay if the enemy took the time to understand his kit.

It was basically a hotfix. he's super broken, and they are trying to address it quickly before they can re-assess to really fix him for good.

Danjeng

I hope so. His kit mainly revolves around spamming abilities, which all add up to an incredible amount of damage. It's difficult to balance this concept without scrapping it all. So they sort of removed him from the game by making him unviable while they balance him. I hope they make some changes that put him back to power, but no so much that he breaks the game.

I would expect an attempt to balance him with the mage update.
