The new HUD is FINE.

Give it a week before you whine on the forums about it. 90% of all the posts are "I'm nearly blind, and I can't see anything anymore because I'm blinded by this white hot rage induced by change". Stop, just stop. The new HUD is overall better than the old hud. Literally get used to it.

It'd say of that 97%, 75% played 1-2 games and couldn't adapt to it immediately so they now forever hate it.

It's just like anything that gets reworked. It's different. It's new. Give it sometime before you decide how you feel.

On that note, yes some people will play it 100 times before making an opinion and come out as saying they hate it. Can't make everyone happy.

Personally I've played it twice in Aram, I'm not crazy about, mostly because I can't find what I'm looking for right away but you know what, that's because I'm not use to it. I too may come to hate it. But what I do like is the ult timers, rearrangeable tab menu and how my playing field feels more open and most needed info down in the corner.

**also I don't like that the mimimap is tinted blue.

I might appreciate the new HUD if I could read the text. The font is painful to read even when I stare right at it. The item icons are darkened and harder to distinguish from one another. I shouldn't have to squint at a game to be able to play it.

most people who are unhappy with the new hud are just not happy with the layout. thats easy to fix tbh. they just need to let us move the hud elements around and adjust the size ourselves.

i too would prefer the champion icons for my team a little bigger and somewhere else.

also, im slightly anoyed that the team icons still dont show summoners and ults like in spectator mode. if theyre going to rework the hud, then they could at least do this while theyre at it.

KING ATTILA1 votes

I'd be ok with that. Still like the old one more

Well, they do show ults.

This basically. It's over all fine, and it looks much nicer. Does take some getting use to. But a certain level of customization would make it better for a lot more players.

I'm not happy with my allies' health bars and cooldowns being both far smaller and in a less convenient and less immediately noticeable location.

That's very important information, and I often need access to it very quickly. The new HUD inhibits that quick access to information and makes information, ironically contrasting with the design intention, much less readily available.

There's more than the layout to be upset about. And how shitty is it that the most popular game in the world literally won't let players configure their UI to how they personally like it? I've been impressed with Riot's game and balance philosophy, but I'm seriously fed up with Riot's design philosophy on anything involving a GUI. How many years has this game been out now? How (relatively) few updates have there been made to graphics and the gui? After each one of those updates, how many thousands of people requested customization? Why has Riot still not delivered? It's shameful.

That aside, there are plenty reasons to legitimately DISLIKE this update:

  1. Lack of peripheral information. -Sure, Riot "cleaned up" the HUD, but now I can't tell out of my peripheral vision what's going on in my minimap, whether or not my teammate's ults are up (it was easier to read before imo.) I can't tell if my ping or if my fps without completely looking away and focusing only on those numbers. Good luck if you're in base trying to distinguish that shit.
  2. The fact that nothing's labelled in the HUD. Why do I seriously need to hover over icons to find out what's what when I press the C key? I already tried to open up a window. Maybe I want to leisurely look at my stats in an easily legible form. I don't want to have to mouse over to a tiny icon to read tiny text telling me that I currently have 11 "resource" regeneration. I have my HUD small so I can see. I digress. The new Tab key is waaaay too barren. I have no idea how any new player would get any kind of meaningful information at a glance. It's clumsy as fuck having to mouse over literally every piece of information.
  3. The minimap is too dark, too small, and has a border that's way too big. Honestly. Idgaf about what my KDA, cs, or Team KDA is when I'm looking at my minimap. It clutters up the bottom right half of my screen. Put that bullshit somewhere else. I didn't mind it at the top of the screen. Whatever. The minimap currently occupies approximately 292 x 313 pixels when it can comfortably fit in 255 x 255 pixels. The minimap is literally 28% bigger than it needs to be...without adding any more information that's actually relevant to the minimap itself.
  4. The recommended items tab in the shop not having uniform lengths in list mode when all of the other formats do have uniform lengths. This is just lazy and it looks bad.
  5. An awful experience bar. Honestly. I'm looking horizontally at my resources already. WHY do I have to suddenly orient myself vertically to find out when I'm going to all-in someone at level 2? Even more contrasting design.
  6. Even though I hit upon this before, LACK OF CUSTOMIZATION. Why must I have gigantic ability icons when I Ctrl level up my abilities, yet be forced to have a much smaller character stat numbers? Why does my character information have to stay locked bottom center? Why can't I move my stats top left, next to where my enemy's can pop up? Why can't I put my items bottom left and leave my ability icons where they are? Also: Why can't I scale the minimap to a size that I prefer? Why won't Riot let me make the decision that a minimap size of a quarter of a screen might be detrimental to me?

Even if the layout not being customizable was the only grievance people had...wouldn't it still be a legitimate grievance?

His Goatliness2 votes

1 I find it easier to find when/if my team's ults are up. The ping/fps was all the way in the top right corner before, at least now it's next to the minimap. You mentioned it was just your opinion, so that's really not a legitimate reason anyway.

2 The stats are in the same order/layout as before, which if you are a "veteran", as most people claim to be, it would make the change fine. not to mention the stats are pretty clear on what they are based on their numbers.

3 You can make the minimap smaller in the options. And as for it being "too dark", that's just an opinion, not a legitmate complaint.

4 Make your own recommended bars if you hate it that much. Again just an opinion.

5 Again, XP bar being the "wrong orientation" is an opinion. Personally I like it.

6 This is the only valid point you made. Most people do seem to want customization, and we'll probably get it with all the people making irrational complaints like your first 5. And you couldn't customize the old one, so bringing it up now as opposed to with the old HUD holds no more weight now than before.

Most of your points were moot, sorry bud.

LastProtagonist3 votes
  1. The ping was in a neon green and stood out very strongly against the background (or turned yellow or red.) FPS was a bolded white. No longer is there this luxury. Also: This is in the same location and not next to the minimap.

  2. You're missing the point. When I'm talking about the C key, I mean the legitimate window that used to pop up, not just the quick stat reference. I don't have an issue with the new one, however, the design is dodgy as shit that if I want to open a no-shit window to view detailed stats that I want to be able to see this information at large and not at the scaled-down size of my HUD.

  3. I want the minimap to be bigger. Not smaller. I want to remove the shitty border it has. I cannot do that.

  4. Why the fuck should I have to fix Riot's poor design when it's clearly an oversight? This suggestion is asinine.

  5. Just because you like it doesn't mean that my grievance is illegitimate, nor that more options shouldn't be given to me. It's not like I can "enable experience bar" to be displayed underneath my character's mana bar.

  6. "5. And you couldn't customize the old one, so bringing it up now as opposed to with the old HUD holds no more weight now than before." Except the community did when they updated the game to THAT hud. This request is not new by any means and there's no reason why this could not nor should not have been implemented.

His Goatliness1 votes

1 If you're checking your ping that often, you're probably looking up to see the number anyway. Not just your peripherals. Having better contrast on the FPS lettering is a valid concern, but it's overshadowed by all the bogus/bad complaints made on the forums.

2 The only "problem" with the new C window is it's small. It still shows all the same stats as it did before. That sends us back to the customization issue.

3 Customization issue.

4 Your OCD doesn't mean riot needs to make everything nice and even the whole way down. Nobody else has had this complaint that I've seen all day. Plus, you don't have to fix anything. I'm betting you probably don't even use the recommended other than for your starting items and maybe your first back anyway.

5 Customization issue.

6 Didn't say it shouldn't be implemented, I'm just saying if you want that specific thing to be done the most, maybe don't flood the forums with complaints like "it's too dark" or "it sucks assssssssssssssss". Be constructive and make a thread that takes a poll on if there should be customization. I can't imagine anyone would be against it, and it would sure as hell be more useful than just rattling off a bunch of unorganized complaints

Seems the only thing you care about is customization of the HUD. Maybe instead of blasting out all your complaints, you could focus on the one that actually matters.

Sorry but I only needed 2 games to realize this mess was giving me eye strain. I don't need a week to "get used to it" when I couldn't play with it much before having to stop.

I've never gotten eye strain playing this game in the multiple years on multiple maps for multiple hours....

2 games and I had to stop.

Then you need to get a bigger monitor, get glasses, or increase your HUD size.

Lightningfst2 votes

Bigger monitor doesn't really help. You literally have to lower your resolution in order to make things bigger on a larger monitor. (coming from a 24" widescreen LCD at 1920 x 1080 resolution).

His Goatliness1 votes

Then you should get your eyes checked. I'm on a 23" HD something something 1920:1080 and I see everything fine. You know there's sliders in game that let you change the size of your HUD, right?

Lightningfst1 votes

I am well aware of the sliders and my eyes were just checked less than 2 weeks ago. I'm not the only one who thinks the font is hard to read.

I have a 20 inch monitor and my hud is at max size. That isn't the issue.

If for years, with this monitor, and the larger, previous HUD, I had zero issues, and the only thing that changed was the new HUD...then pretty sure I'm not suddenly the issue lol Especially since when I played a game without the new HUD, I instantly had zero issues.

Well looking at screenshots from before and after the HUD update I can say the new HUD is larger, or at the very least the same size. Although the minimap might be a little smaller, I'm not sure. The contrast between all the icons and everything seems fine to me. The trinket slot might be a little small, but I don't think that really matters. You can make the main portion of the HUD take up pretty close to the entire bottom portion of the screen, so I can't imagine you would have to strain your eyes to see anything. Is it at all possible you're being over dramatic in saying you physically can't play with the new HUD?

"larger" doesn't mean the same as "easier to look at".

No, I'm not being dramatic, but you are pretty much being a jerk assuming because you like it fine that it won't pose problems for anyone.

People like you are why Riot don't take feedback, because you dismiss legitimate issues, and Riot sees it and goes "yeah, must just be what this guy said" and ignore the other 70 threads. Seriously, it is nice and all that YOU, like it, but you are in the less than 1% of the vocal group that really can't stand it.

I might be in a small group having actual issues with it (don't care you opinion of it really, it is what it is), but you liking it doesn't make it any less a fact. Maybe...just sound like less of a selfish prick about it "is fine with me, so obviously your problems must just be dramatic and not true".

http://www.color-blindness.com/tritanopia-blue-yellow-color-blindness/ Maybe you're colorblind.

Pretty sure I would be aware of being colorblind. Not sure why you would assume that.

Feel free to come up with 50 different excuses for Riot and their bad HUD though.

Just like Riot saying it must be everyone else's fault they have high ping, until they finally admit in 2015 that it is their fault and they are working on it.

Sometimes the obvious option is the correct option. When you hear hooves, you should assume horse, not Zebra.

His Goatliness1 votes

Riot's shit servers have nothing to do with this, though it's not incorrect to say they ignored that huge issue for a long time. I said colorblind because the old HUD didn't have those colors on it hardly at all. As for what you implied about it being Riot's fault that your eyes hurt from the HUD, I'd have to say they can't ask each and every individual player if their HUD "hurts their eyes". Of all the complaints on the Forum, they're basically all about how "it's ugly, crammed, bad, poor design, etc...". A very very small portion of the people say anything about their eyes hurting unless it's just an issue of HUD size(More specifically the stat pane), which some people seem to have. So I'm gonna go ahead and say, even though I may be in a very small % of the people that actually like the HUD, you too are in a very small % of the group that has a very specific issue with it. I'm sure you can adapt to the new HUD if you actually want to play the game. I still doubt the HUD is actually making your eyes hurt. You're probably just sitting too close to your screen.

Sythriel Draken2 votes

The only issue I have is either the enemy's stats, or your teams stats needs to be in the lower left hand of the screen, that or the ability to move the chat bar to that corner as that's a lot of empty space..

Mr Binga2 votes

I like the new HUD. It's taking a bit to get used to, but that's something im willing to deal with in exchange for more visibility (a fully open corner) and things like being able to gauge how soon ally ults will be up. Don't get me wrong, there are design decisions I disagree with, but I find it to be a positive overall change and I'm excited to get more time with it.
