How to counter play Ryze

Hello, I am a Ryze main currently in Silver IV. I am often disliked and insulted for using the Rogue Mage. I think this is because Ryze is a no skill champion who just WQEQ's, and ends up with a triple. He's also quite durable, while being able to dish out massive damage. It may seem unfair and broken that such a champion could exist, but I assure you that there is counter play. (Note: I'm not sure if I sound mean or salty in this post, since I get cussed at a lot, but I am not trying to make fun of anybody. If I sound passive aggressive, please tell me, and tell my how I could improve my writing)

Ryze currently has the lowest win rate of all champions in bronze, and the highest win rate in Master.

Ryze has a massive skill ceiling, and could be frustrating to go against, so I will give some tips on how to survive in a lane with him. To beat an enemy, you must first know what it is. Though it looks like he just throws out a jumble of spells, Ryze is a predictable champion. With these pointers, I hope to share my insight on Ryze.

  1. Cooldowns. Unlike other mages, spending points into Ryze's three main abilities do not lower their cooldowns. For example, a level 1 Rune Prison has the same cooldown as a level 2 one. Therefore, it is easy to foresee when his abilities are up, and when he is ready to engage. At 0% CDR, Q has a cooldown of 4 seconds, W with 14, and E with 7.

  2. Abilities. Overload is a skillshot which scales well in the late game. When Ryze tries to last hit a siege minion with it, body block the overload. Ryze's most famous ability is Rune Prison. Early on, the snare lasts only 1 second and has a long cooldown, so he is quite vulnerable during this time. Spell flux is my favorite; it does more damage to the initial target if that target is within the vicinity of their allies. Therefore, to counter spell flux, do not stand near your minions. It is very effective when combined with Ryze's ultimate, which gives him AoE on his abilities.

  3. Mana. Ryze runs out of mana very quickly in the early game. Having lane sustain (like Cho'gath), allows you to outlast Ryze, as his mana regeneration is low. Ryze is known for going all in and dropping down enemies in one go. Don't try to all in an all-in-er.

  4. IMPORTANT: Arcane Mastery. This is Ryze's passive. It is what makes him unique. Some suggest to keep away from him when he has a high number of stacks, because he could proc his passive any time. But that is wrong. You should instead engage a Ryze the more stacks he has! Ryze can actually begin his combo with one stack of arcane mastery. To elaborate, Arcane Mastery only holds up for 5 spells casted by Ryze. So if he begins at 1 stack, he can pull off 8 spells before Arcane Mastery ends. While at 4 stacks, he can only fire off 5 spells. This is the best tip I can give.

My prediction is that this post will get a negative amount of likes, with other summoners commenting how garbage Ryze is, and that I should kill myself for maining him. I created this discussion not to argue that Ryze is a skilled champion, and to show off, but to give information with my experience of this certain champion. My wish is that the community is friendly and enjoyable by being open to other's ideas.

Bonus video< Check this out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3sOUKNrPQyw Though Fiora is one of my most common matchups in the top lane (and I DID lose to her often), I don't think she is broken or overpowered. In the video, though Maple is up by 40 CS and a kill, he played horribly. He popped up Desperate Power much too early (it's called that for a reason, you use it to turn a fight around!), ran right into a melee fighter, didn't position himself near enemy minions to take advantage of Spell Flux, and even Rune Prisoned a Fiora in mid Riposte. This would happen to me sometimes, but instead of complaining broken, I re-watched my own games and saw what I did wrong. I'm not especially skilled--my main champions are Ryze, Ashe, and Garen--but just like Ryze, I'm willing to learn and improve. I'm still down here, slowly climbing up the ranks, so I want to hear YOUR general tips on how to be a better player.

Last I checked Ryze still has a passive which is by all means an abuse case and in turn a huge part of his power budget is in it.

Bronze can't properly abuse it while diamond and master ryze players know how to abuse it consistently.

That blanket statement was very ignorant (not stupid, but ignoring a factor). A One-trick can abuse anything that diamonds can.

IT is true they can assuming they are willing to learn how.

But my lack of putting "in general" seems to be causing you some frustrations with my comment.

A tier is rarely "in general" experience that people give to it.

Although I have never played against a Ryze, this will be something to keep in mind.

Those who say "X is no skill" play the champion for the first time and almost always exhibit behavior contrary to their statements.

I mained Sona for a while and I realized that people would say it, and it would only motivate me to win even more.

Not bad, but the only real thing resembling counterplay in that was your suggestion that it's better to fight at high passive stacks than low ones.

Otherwise, the only real ways to play against Ryze are to burst him or tank him.

Hello Danjeng,

Good work on this post and report!

First of all i will start by saying Thank you, because i was unable to find other detailed description LoLcounters speaks only about the positives of Ryze and i cannot find any reliable data on his weak spots.

I just had a match against him (Kayle), very rarely have I seen Ryze, actually my last approach was like 2 years ago. My memory told me i never won a match against experienced Ryze and he literally outplayed me. Since my remaster does not allow me to have ranged until 11... all your recommendations to lock him early or stop his farm were futile. Even though i kept a 10-15 farm count above him, his jungler made sure every time he is in danger or low to come save his arse.

He is powerful and cannot be soloed on even farm status. The only one who was able to perform blows on Ryze was Kogmaw as he was sniping him from afar. Midgame, none of my team was even trying to approach him, they pretend they did not see him and kept engaging other targets and he was literally vaporizing anyone when his cd's were down.

My ranged attacks merely poked him and even if i caught him offguard during summs he just used flash.

I do not know why community is whining about. It is a strong champ, even now March2019, season 9.

Your post is legitimately placed here and I see why people complained. Even though there are other brokies (wtf is that word) at mid, they all seem to see have flaws and weak spots, this one does not, he just need to walk around until cd's are down. Even though I learned and gained some insight, by reading this report.

His negatives were covered back, if you have a brained jungler to guard you and a support to stick with you later on. Anyway, keep proud of your main and keep breaking bones.

Can you give us some insight on which champions are high treat to him? How about assassin types like Zed, Akali, Talon?

Thank you.

I'm surprised you found this 3 year old post! Ryze has since then been reworked, and my skill level has also changed (I was likely only silver then), so some things may not be as relevant. But I'm still a proud Ryze main!

Ryze generally beats Kayle, because he can take short favorable trades against Kayle, and run away with his EWQ when the trade does not favor him. Ryze is like a shotgun. He quickly casts a bunch of spells, waits a few seconds, then casts another bunch of spells. Meanwhile Kayle is a machine gun, who constantly attacks. If you can survive Ryze's initial burst, there is a small amount of time (13 seconds to 5 seconds depending on Ryze rank and cooldown) when Ryze does not have his W so he loses out on his damage and root. It is during this time that you can fight him and win (unless he is really fed). Merc Treads are a must have VS Ryze.

Here are 2 useful gameplay tips: If you are with your team, make sure you are positioned behind your tank. Ryze's damage comes mostly from his Q, which travels in a straight line. A tank in between you and Ryze means that Ryze cannot target you before taking down the tank, this is one of his weaknesses. In lane, instead of hiding behind a tank, use your minion wave as a shield from any Q's from him. But Ryze has ways of dealing with that. Try to stay away from 1) minions low on HP 2) any allies with "flux", because Ryze can spread his flux onto anyone near those targets and deal a lot of damage on them.

Ryze is good versus assassins, because he is tanky enough to survive their burst, then can lock them down and burst them himself. However, lots of Ryzers fear the scary blue bird known as Anivia. Vel'Koz and Xerath are also some champions that Ryze has trouble against, because he can't even get into range while they can constantly throw spells at him. In terms of statistics, Ryze always has a very low win rate against Malzahar and Annie (~30%). Both these champions have targeted hard CC. But a good Ryze will always be very hard to beat because they minimize their weaknesses through their skill and knowledge of the game.

Good luck. Hope you're enjoying the Kayle rework. Let's not necro this thread, since mods don't like that, if you have NA account you can add me and we can chat. Or you can head to r/Ryzemains.
