Why does Ryze's ult give him spellvamp?

I'm just curious, why spellvamp? It doesn't fit thematically, (him being a mysterious wizard that must safeguard a scroll ≠ sucking health from enemies, like Morgana or Vlad) and it also makes him super hard to play against: I think they went the right direction in shifting his ability to maintain some health in a fight with his shield, and if he can proc that shield multiple times in a fight then he can mitigate quite a lot of damage; but with spellvamp it feels like he is getting a very selective stat that when he was first made they slapped it on to give his ultimate something other than just movespeed and making his spells AoE.

It reminds me of old season 3 when an ADC can go off into the jungle at 30% HP and fully heal off their lifesteal, but this time it is on a much higher level. If it was reduced or removed (among other issues he's been having, like the quadra-root) then he would be in a healthier state of play.

Help him survive as a mid-range sustained damage dealer, basically.

It's only for 6 seconds and it's specifically designed to help him survive teamfights due to his low range, lack of mobility and general lack of tools to deal with being bursted. The shield helped but the shield alone wouldn't allow him to teamfight well at all. He needs the spellvamp.

Because he is medium range, needs to deal sustained damage, and lacks mobility, so they gave him survivability. Also, I disagree with it not fitting thematically. Ryze is a mage that delved so deep into the study of magic that he became a being of magic. It makes sense that using magic would sustain him.
