Sick of getting melted by Elise with only one item.
Hey now, MR vs. someone like on-hit Teemo isn't as great as it could be: but Elise?
Elise is hit very hard with MR.
She's usually built AP Bruiser with a heavy reliance on magic penetration to take her damage to the next level. Usually flat pen early, which runes into weirdness concerning countering MR.
Flat pen is awful vs. resistances. Why is magic pen bad vs. magic resistance?
Vs. 30 MR, 30 magic penetration will let you deal True Damage!
Vs. 300 MR? It...it won't.
That's a difference of ~30% more damage vs. ~8% more damage.
Is it dump Magic Penetration is counters by Magic resistance? Is that misleading? Is having damage multipliers that are specifically good vs. squishy targets when all damage is good vs. squishy targets because they're squishy?
Yes, yes, and yes.
So - vs.
? MR is a very strong counter to these.
Ditto for armor vs.
And with M pen,
will never synergize with %pen by being debuff based and always being applied prior, which makes
very sub-optimal with lacking internat synergy.
If you are a tanky top laner and happen to be against an AP top, you will automatically be less useful to your team mid game because you build MR instead of armor, making it harder for your team to seige/dive
Not necessarily.
Generally speaking, tanky top-lanners tend towards a damage item first over defense.
Also - while MR has lower overall values than Armor, MR is avalible with a much larger mix of possible stats and bonuses, making it very easy to add into builds at any time.
With AD leaning fighters: you do have
as well, without equivalent armor/physcial damage items even existing.
If they are going to keep adding sustained magic damage to the game they need to make MR analogs to thornmail and frozen heart.
This really depends on kit designs, and I'd imagine has more to do with certain champions needing to be nerffed than anything else.
Firstly, there are champions like
that specifically do such a mix of physical/magical/ability/auto-attack damage with the occasional %max HP, true, or armor/mr pen steroids thrown in they are effectively impossible to counter-build.
As a game with strategic elements, being tanky isn't always going to be the best stratagy. Just as you can't always dodge skills because point-click and you can't always out-range/kit opponents because mobility.
is effectivly a Tanky DPS champion like the above with her typical build as well, being a little easier to counterbuild in exchange for her short range.
Also - most champions have at least some degree of resilience vs. being shut down completely by counter-builds.
