More Sona Nerfs

12/15 PBE Update

I really need some clarification on this. Sona is in a good spot right now. She brings a good amount of utility and damage to her team. She is a great poke supp, and synergizes very well with poke comps.

However, she is the squishiest champion in the game atm, or at least in the bottom 5. With no runes or masteries, she has less health than a melee minion. On top of that, she is very low range. She has to be very close to all of her teammates to get 100% effectiveness out of her abilities, and is very, very easy to pop in teamfights or skirmishes.

Riot's nerfs last patch were unjustified, and this only makes it worse, both literally and figuratively.

Now, to me, the thing that stands out to me about Sona is her Q. I love it. It can be used as long range poke, or, a hard engage nuke. The original cast is pretty weak, but can hit 2 targets at 700 range. However, if she gets in auto range, this can be combined with her passive, dealing quite a bit of damage. This can be very very risky however, as anyone with a brain will jump on you, and you will die. If you go for the passive poke at the wrong time, you will get 1-shotted. This is even more true against supports like Zyra, Leona, Thresh, and Blitz, as the will laugh as you get 100 - 0 with their abilities alone.

Now, the reason I am writing this is because they want to Nerf Sona's passive Q powercord. The nerf? 50% of powercord damage reduced to 40%. Stack that on with last patch's nerfs, and this is a serious problem.

The thing that bothers me even more is that at the same time, Elise and Hecarim are geting buffed. Now, dont get me wrong, I think these champs need a buff, but they are already seeing lcs play. Guess who has not seen a single game this year? (Correct me if im wrong), Sona.

Now to me, Nerfing a non-competitive pick, and buffing already dominant competitive picks sends some very strong messages that really just say, and I quote "Ma Esports". The best part is, I never see anyone say "Damn that Sona was OP". You guys just keep nerfing her. Over and Over again.

Her scalings arent good, her heal is mediocre, and her speed-boost is non existent early game. She has to consistently put herself in danger to be effective, and, praise the sun, she actually gets huge rewards for being played properly! I don't see the problem Riot has with Sona, but she needs to be left alone. It is okay for a supp other than Thresh and Janna to be played, I promise!

I demand justice. A symphony of justice, for our fare Maiden of the Strings. I call out to you, my fellow Sona enthusiests, re-direct your pitchforks from the rework, and let us try to salvage what remains.

I'm so f#$%ing tired of these nerfs. Everything since the rework has been a constant nerf mallet to her skull. The W is iffy for most of the game, the E is outclassed, and the Q is the only form of peel and reliable protection Sona can provide until level 6. Then she becomes a walking ult. Sona is her f#$%ing ult now. When are we going to get a songstress instead of this stun rod these endless nerfs keep devolving her into?

There's no point in even posting this anymore. Riot hasn't answered a question regarding Sona is almost 2 months now. Seriously Riot, wtf is the deal? Yes, I'm angry. No I'm not apologizing.

I really agree with you, the only benefit she currently has for her team, is basically throwing her ult into the fray and hoping the other person doesn't get out of the stun duration and 1-shot her/rest of the enemy team kills her AND her ADC because they decided to go for the jungler who they caught in a bush and wanted a free kill. I love Sona so much. She was the 3rd champ I bought, I believe, and I liked her before the rework, I like her now, but I don't like how I can't do anything because of how I need to get into the range of dying because I needed to AA off my passive. Riot needs to have the passive have extended range for JUST the passive AA, then go back to the standard AA range, that way you can be safe against overpicked supports like Blitz, Thresh, Nami, Janna, Zyra, Braum, Morgana, just because they add more to the plate and can actually get a win for the lane. Sona is too squishy. I made a post about this earlier, basically just asking for a build, but after playing as Lulu, Syndra, Lissandra, Annie, Janna, I can see why (well, 3 of those) they are picked as supports as opposed to picking supports that I enjoy because I LIKE THEM, not because they are strong as F (though I picked the other characters as supports BECAUSE of the fact that I didn't need many items to gain strength, and I like playing as them.). Sona either needs a mana and health increase, decrease in mana costs, increase in mana/health regen, SOMETHING!!! MAKE MY FAVORITE GIRL WORTH PLAYING AS AGAIN!!!

There was nothing wrong with pre-rework Sona in the first place.

Exactly. At this rate, Nami is quite literally going to tail smack Sona in the face, and take away her position completely. There will be no reason to pick Sona over Nami.

History is repreating itself.

I dont think you understand what the term 1 shot means

I know plenty about what it means low elo child

it means that sona has to go within 550 range to actually -maybe- hurt someone when she can be 1-2 shot by anyone that built any kind of damage

meaning the risks far outweigh the rewards of poking ANYONE with ANYTHING other than her 200damage 700 range q late game which after mr you are talking maybe 100 damage on somebody? during something like a base siege

meanwhile thresh/blitz instagib anyone they land a skillshot on during a siege end game and their range is shit tons longer than 550

you may as well just say that blitz/thresh hook does 2000 damage because thats the sort of burst you will receive 90% of the time you are hit by their cancerous kit end game

hit 1 ability? 2000 damage walk within 550 range as sona and hit an ability? an ability you had to go OOM charging BTW becuase she is so fucking mana hungry she spends more time OOM than actually having mana? uhh 400 damage? oshi gamebreaking1+shift=!

I have yet to find a sona I cant 100-0 with my adc when I play leona start grab and full armor runes and you can literally all in her at level 1

and laugh off any attempts of the adc trying to hit you

the shit isnt rocket science sona is the easiest possible lane to win as a thresh/leona/blitz all you hvae to do is land one damn skillshot rofl

Wishing Umbreon15 votes

Nerfing a support over win rate is stupid. Support is the lesser wanted role meaning anyone who wants to legit support puts their team at an advantage. This inflates support win rates.

You're half-correct. There are zero Sona LCS games after the "rework." Before the "rework," she was used in multiple games as a player-preference pick as a viable substitute for Nami.

Serious pros refuse to touch her. The "rework" was a series of 11 or more nerfs and zero buffs, Frostfang got nerfed, patch 4.20 and now this. Don't people see it yet? Riot wants us to stop playing her. Whence she has the lowest pick-rate in the game, they'll be able to self-justify their choice to completely delete her from the game in the most literal sense, not just metaphorical.

Great.

Just fucking great.

First they give her a rework that makes her Q damage literally the shittiest offensive ability as a support.

Now they're nerfing it even more?

I really hate this.

I really hate this rework. I didn't want it and I don't think many people wanted it either. Came out of fucking nowhere. Now they're nerfing her even though the point of the rework was to make her more "interactive" in which she has to constantly explode in order to do.

I honestly agree, the Q's poke damage is really weak, and is really lackluster, unless the other people are more focused on the chat or trying to get their farm, not to mention her mana costs are through the roof. I honestly liked the rework, because now the heal gives a bonus shield to those in the radius, and such, but I thought it was a CLARITY rework, not like a Viktor rework or a Soraka rework(so long, mana gifts[who else misses those?]) or even a Heimerdinger rework, where they changed his rockets from auto-targeting to actually needing aim to land. Sona is more interactive BECAUSE of the fact she needs to be close up to do something, but since she is so fricken squishy, you need to build her as a tank in order to gain full effectiveness. Supports already have poor AP scaling, not to mention low damage output, but Sona shouldn't be thrown into the Urgot pile of uselessness just because she is supposedly in a "good spot"... Unless the good spot is being one-shotted by a Blitzcrank or a Zyra, because they have snares/stuns that aren't on a 120 second cooldown. I honestly wasn't expecting the rework for Sona, because I thought she was pretty good where she was back in Season 3. Heck, I was able to kill a fleeing Yi with my Q's beam, while our Yi was chasing him, and I caused the enemy Yi to rage quit(that was honestly the best game, just because of that). It was either the fact that when you are around level 10-15, people get caught out easier and aren't as aware as their surroundings, but I do believe Sona, our beautiful maven of the strings, needs to STOP BEING NERFED!!! I hate being flamed at because I picked Sona due to me saying, "Hey Sona, I haven't played as you for a while. I'm gonna play a match as you, for old times sake.", and then I underestimate MY damage as well as how much damage THE OTHER SUPPORT puts on me, not to mention that the heal+shield is just a waste of mana, as is using any of her other spells, because they do nothing until she gets the extra bonuses from her ultimate. We need to start a petition and get the buff train rolling. There are too many Sona enthusiasts who want buffs, and there is no one saying "nay", BECAUSE THERE'S NO POINT IN SAYING "NAY"!!! RIOT'S ALREADY SAYING "NAY" FOR US!!!!

P.S. Sorry for the long rant, but I really want to play as Sona without having to back after walking too far out just to give some poke or to throw my passive AA and get another one going. GASP! I just thought of something! You should be able to STACK her passive AA, making the AA stronger the more passive AA you get, obviously stopping at a stack of 3, because that's the number of basic spells at her disposal. Just a thought.

Seviang2 votes

I play Sona support a lot and she does awesome damage with her q power chord at every stage of the game. Unless the opposing lane has a Leona/Thresh/Blitz that's good it's incredibly easy to poke the adc right out of lane.

cshakes1 votes

Funnily enough, I find that I can poke Leona and Thresh out easily enough. Haven't faced Blitz yet.

Honestly, if you can dodge the skillshots, she can stomp on anyone pre-6. Post-6, long-range ults like Leona's can be a problem.

Except that Leona's W gives a lot of amor/mr, and one little E from her will either force you to flash or ensure you die because you're about as squishy as they come.

cshakes1 votes

Leonas don't generally start with W, so Sona has the superior level 1. Sona's ranged, so she reaches level 2 first. I also find it easy to dodge Leona E's, especially since Leonas typically target the ADC. If they get to the ADC at level 2, either they have no stun (E+W) or they're really squishy (E+Q). In either case, you can Q, W and auto safely. Level 3, Sona gets E for dodging, but Leona reaches her power spike, so it becomes a lane of dodging. 4 and 5 I'd say Sona has some advantage, but Leona's 6 is huge.

It Is I Emoto8 votes

Even if Leonas don't start with W, they start with an relic shield, and that's where leona begins to outscale Sona with healing. Leonas usually play pretty safe till lvl 3, where they can go all in. If you're poking as Sona, you're practically serving yourself to get killed by leonas adc. Yeah you can wait till Leona used her E, then Sona has some seconds time to poke the enemy carry/leona, but it's still pretty dangerous.

cshakes1 votes

{quoted}

leona begins to outscale Sona with healing

...what.

Relic Shield heal: 40 HP (2 charges, 60s CD) Hymn of Valor: 40 dmg (50 dmg if you have Spellthief's) ... if you get in an auto-attck, the combo is 110 damage Aria of Perseverance: 30 HP (10s CD)

So, Leona with Relic Shield healing per second: 40 HP / 60s = 2/3 HP/s ~ 0.7 HP/s Sona healing per second: 30 HP / 10 s = 3 HP/s (note: healing increases based on missing HP, this is the worst-case scenario)

Leona with Face of the Mountain: 50 HP / 30s = 5/3 HP/s ~ 1.7 HP/s Sona healing with level 5 W: 110 HP / 10s = 11 HP/s (note: healing increases based on missing HP, this is the worst-case scenario)

It Is I Emoto7 votes

I'm talking about the lvl 1 - 3 sustain. If you keep poking her, she'll can heal it with the passive of the relic shield, since Sonas W isn't healing that much with one or two points. And I wasn't talking about the late game, I was talking about laning phase/pre lvl 6. Yeah, Sona can keep poking, but don't forget that Leona can do her healing for free, if she uses the passive wisely. Sonas heal costs quite alot of mana as well, so if I would play against an enemy sona, and know that she's oom, she'll be pretty worthless if Leona tries a engage.

cshakes1 votes

In my experience, Sona's healing is much, much more powerful than Relic Shield since it increases based on how much health the target is missing. It's like a reverse execute!

I generally remedy the high mana consumption by having 3 MP5 seals and speccing MP5 in the utility tree, which gives me enough MP5 that I can spam Q almost on CD and use W occasionally, and only go OOM if the enemy jungler comes to visit and I have to QWEohgodADCplzdon'tdie repeatedly.

It Is I Emoto7 votes

I.. I don't think you read the patchnotes, do you? Sonas heal got nerfed in the last patch.

it heals the base amount + 50% if the target is left with 0% health. Relic shield heals the same amount, or actually the double amount of Sonas current heal.

lets see..

point 1 Sona heal 30 + 0.2 ap (assume 10 ap) = 32 hp get healed on cast If her target is left with 50% health, the heal increase would be about 8 hp. Sona would heal 40 hp if her target is left with 50% health

Relic shield heals 30 hp per charge. If someone would use two charges at once, it would heal 60 hp.

So, does Sonas heal still outscale relic shield?

And if you really want to see how much the final item heals vs Sonas 5 point heal..

point 5 Sona heal : 110 + 0.2 ap (assume 60 hp) = 122 hp on cast If her target is left with 50% health, the heal increase would be about.. 30 hp Sona would heal 152 hp if her target is left with 50% health

Face of the mountain has max 4 charges and heals 50 + 1% max health of the champion (let's assume it's Leona, she's lvl 10 and has only the FotM) Leonas max health: 1250 + 300 = 1550 hp.

Leona would heal 50 + 15 health = 65 health per charge. If she would use her 4 charges, it would heal 260 hp.

So? You still think Sonas heal is so strong? FotM heals much more than Sonas current heal, and can compete with actual support heals like Nami and Taric (note: tarics heal does also target himself and ally, like Sona)

Yeah, in situations where no minions are around, Sona has a advantage, but FotMs heal is great for stalling in lane, mostly if lane minions are coming.

Could you factor in the team-wide shield's effective HP, as well?

Pika3107 votes

The shield with a 1.5 second duration? That shield? I'm not sure having a shorter lifespan than methane can equate to an actual existence. I've had goldfish that lived longer than Sona's shield.

Not to mention it's a melee ability, just like all of Sona's "auras." Her bosom has a larger radius than her "music," I'm not sure how that backwards logic is supposed to work.

Lystrates10 votes

Ironically, I would argue that Sona needs a buff in her Support abilities. Sona is in a really bad place early game, the only thing she has going for her early on is her poke. Nerfing that, while not buffing anything else is short-sighted.

I think it should be obvious to any Sona player that she need bigger early level base shields and speed boost. Right now, two of her three normal abilities are almost ignorable early game. Doing any nerfs to her now is, in my opinion, like kicking someone when they are down.

I understand that Riot does not like lane bullies, but literally that's the only thing Sona has going for her early game. I agree with the OP that being a poker is a good tradeoff for how squishy she is. If she is not going to be that good of a poker, she also needs to be more durable.

Riot, please improve Sona's early game Support abilities, and then worry about balancing other things. Right now Sona is a hair away from being non-viable.

Absolutely. The only useful thing about E early is it's powerchord (and even then it's very situational). The shield on w literally isn't enough to block a single auto attack (rank 1 is 35 +20%ap).

HowPlayGAEM9 votes

Goddamn it, this shit is stupid. Her Q powerchord is already the only one worth using because the utility on the others sucks ass, her W and E are boring to use, suck ass and their cooldowns are all over the place, and her ult is her only CC.

This rework sucks. Not as hard as the Cass rework, but it still sucks.

Such fucking BS. Lee Sin gets to run around with obscene damage, mobility and playmaking while Sona gets nerfs, AGAIN. Ya because she stifles so many games in LCS right? Oh wait she almost never even sees play there.

I love how Sona has been nerfed over and over since Season 2 for no apparent reason. I sorta get it that she was pretty strong in season 2, but that was after a nerf on her auras (originally i think you can stack the auras, as in q+w+e at the same time, but in s2 they changed it), but still, the sona nerfs were mostly unwarranted.

@riot, I know this is only pbe and changes may not be implemented. But what i want is for you to give back Sona's S2 stats. That's probably the only way to make her competitive again. otherwise just rework her entirely, because right now Sona is just as much a troll pick as Heimer way back when

Rinky Dinky7 votes

I like how out of the dozens of Sona threads popping up, not a single Red Response or explanation. Come on rito, just explain to us why.

Pika3106 votes

The problem is, Riot can't with honest words give any proper or logical reasoning. Every Riot word thus far since the original discussion in April has been pure propaganda. They're not going to stop lying to us now, this far in.

Fact of the matter is that Riot regrets creating Sona and wish for her continuity to be completely removed from League. There was no other reason for them to "rework" (nerf) a healthy C-class champion to an F-class one. Then there was even less logic to this and the last nerf being done to said F-class champ.

The dead horse isn't decaying fast enough, so they're beating it to speed up the process.

Rinky Dinky6 votes

It simply isnt fair. I love Sona. I love her playstyle, her design, her lore, all of it.

Back when all of my friends where playing this, and I was a scrub console peasant, I never saw anything about league that interested me. But then, I saw it. I saw an amazing fanart with Sona in it. I wanted to know who it was, and alas, I finally gave league a try. Sona isnt the sole reason I started playing, but she gave me the push needed to download. She was my main all the way to level 30.

Seeing her trampled on like this is depressing. They might as well delete her. At least then I wont have the temptation to lock her in.

MAZZ1M06 votes

There's nothing they can say to the Sona community at this point that wouldn't cause fires and pitchforks to be raised. They know that. They're not subjecting themselves to it. It's basically them saying, we're deleting her, we're not listening to your input (even though we said we would) and we're not responding (even though we said we'd improve communication.) It's a damn good thing the other divisions aren't like this. The art divisions I would say are almost a little too interactive.

hmm so basically if sona wants to poke with aa she faces the possibility of having to burn flash/die every single time she decides to poke with aa and the only semi safe poke is her q which does barely any damage now after repeated nerfs

oh and going to leave this part of namis kit here its called "sona will never be able to outpoke me as long as im higher than b5 elo" but for some reason its showing up as ebb and flow on my client

Ebb and Flow RANGE: 725 COST: 70 / 85 / 100 / 115 / 130 mana COOLDOWN: 10

Active: Nami unleashes a stream of water that bounces between allied and enemy champions. This ability can only bounce to each target once and hits up to 3 targets. The damage and heal are modified by -15% (+ 7.5% per 100 AP) with each bounce.

Heal: 65 / 95 / 125 / 155 / 185 (+ 30% AP) (2x sonas healing)

Magic Damage: 70 / 110 / 150 / 190 / 230 (+ 50% AP) (2x sonas damage)

so lets nerf the champion that heals for way less and pokes for way less than namis ebb and flow at a shorter range of 700

This nerf is fully warranted.

But they should increase her innate defenses to compensate.

She's an overloaded lane bully with too much sustain and utility to have that kind of damage.

And look at her stats... Not to mention this "nerf" is almost nothing.

What utility does she have besides her ult? Her mini-exhaust and slow all require you to have your passive up, meaning you have to use 3 spells before you can slow or exhaust someone, and you can't do both.

LOL..why would you discount her Power Chords? You have to have your passive up, oh no! You have to AA between button mashes!

It's the fact that she can't spam all her spells to get power chord constantly because then she'll go OOM Also it takes time and she has to wait for cooldowns - so it's not like her passive is up all the time
