How is AP ezreal any good ever?

So I use to play alot of adc and I love ezreal (top 3 fav) but recently being mid on a team ive played a bit of ez mid and ofc after dominating 2 games as ad ezreal someone asked me why I dont play ap ezreal mid.

So I tried ap ezreal 3 times. Each time I felt like I had less of everything. Technically my burst should have been higher but even that felt like it wasnt high enough to actually burst anyone. Anyways I got rolled all 3 ap ezreal games and just feel like he does nothing better than ad ezreal.

What am I missing? Ap ezreal sucks? My items were bad? >.>

I think you can do basically as much damage as AD ez, but you have more burst and your ult does WAY more damage. Your Q reliably procs Lichbane for you, so you have some consistent DPS as well. Just more skill shot reliant basically and need to hit that ult on multiple enemies. Maybe not that great in lane becuase your E is pretty unreliable.

Well the main thing for ap ezreal is his e and w. if you weren't getting at least one of those off then there's your first problem. Second, you should have a lot of ap items. When I go ap ezreal I build item 3089 item 3135 item 3128 item 3157 item 3001 item 3020

After that my ult usually does 1.2k dmg and my w and e do 600 dmg and my q does 400-500 dmg.

Then there's the matter of playing him. Basically, use your w to poke them through minions and use your q for range. Use e to either engage or escape. If engage, MAKE SURE IT HITS. Otherwise half your damage is gone. If you can get your skillshots and your build good, then its just a matter of how you use them. For example, when someone's chasing me (and I can kill them with all 3 shots) I e behind then w and q in their direction. Usually they're trying to get to you so they won't avoid it (got a triple kill this way)

So get pure AP build, get your skillshots off, then you should do fine as ap ez (and always look for someone to snipe with your ult since, with q's, its on a really low cd)

Pretty much this. Also, if you're maxing Q on AP Ez (like you do on AD Ez), then you're going to be a LOT weaker earlier on, maxing W>E>Q is a lot better on AP Ez.

I think it's better to go q first, because most mid laners take mr, and your q scales ap into the q's physical damage. You should always look at your enemies mr before doing this though, because if they have more armor to counter the possible ad mid, then your w and e will do more damage. Either way, e puts you in bad positions if you aren't careful, so only max it if you are 100 % sure of your capabilities.

I buuild W/E/Q and my items where rabbadon/voidstaff/lichbane at around 30m and I couldnt kill anyone after 30m lol

Yes sorry. I think I replace abyssal scepter with lich bane sometimes....but that depends on the enemy....

He's really item dependent, needing at least one mana/mana regen item (tear, chalice/athenes or morello's) and the deathcap/lich bane combo to be effective. Since he doesn't have any waveclear aside from his ult and low auto damage, it can be really difficult to get at that point. He does have really high potential damage output, the issue is that you have to land everything. And if you're used to playing AD ez, it can be difficult to adjust to the fact that your W and E are much more important than your Q (and your E is your escape, so if you use it for damage you can be in a really bad spot).

He does snowball really hard if you can get ahead, but he isn't a very safe pick. Pretty fun, though.

My usual build is sorc shoes > athenes/morello's (morello's since athenes nerf, seraphs works too but i like the cdr) > deathcap > lich bane > void staff > dfg/zhonya's/situational

You have to build AP Ezreal the way you want to play him. There are two main ways to do this:

Full burst mage, no second chances, but more damage
Spam mage, with second chances, but less damage

I personally prefer the spam mage style, taking some CDR runes, Rushing item 3100 first (CDR on Q, more DPS) item 3158 , item 3089 , then your generic assortment of AP items.

The thing with Ezreal is you can really build him however you want, so if the build you're looking at isn't working for you, then try a different one. I always laugh at the damage output of AD Ezreals because they are just so weak by comparison.
